Money is nothing but freedom with money you can create your own morality . This is the credo that the characters live by in Saira Viola's novel of social realism : Crack Apple and Pop . At times a gritty slice of life , at others a metafictive commentary on pop culture . A dark satire on the culture of greed with a gripping plot at its heart . A young black boxer is forced ...more

Following in the footsteps of such experimental literature writers such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and futurist author F.T. Marinetti, author Saira Viola has created a new writing style called Sonic Scatter-script. It's a style of writing that includes lyrical beats, art, and popular culture woven into the dialogue and story line to give a really fresh twist on the plot and characters. Some examples of this pulsating and vibrant style of writing are: "He was tall and skinny a cros ...more

A Runyonesque depiction of the underbelly of London's night and druglife, where all stratas of society collide in their search for the next big buzz. Crack Apple and Pop follows the arc of a promising boxer, career cut short, who falls into the orbit of a Yardie Don. The language and terminology is sharply observed and authentic. Loved it!

world of corruption at it's very best.

Saira does incredibly well with the new style of writing - she definitely delivered it with pizzazz. And her unique way of referencing random artists, musicians and random other famous people, is very cool. Anyone that has been living within scope of internet in the last 30 years would definitely get a kick out of all those references, as images and sounds form in your head.

You could almost hear the story being narrated by the writer, with a lilt and a sligh

A sweepingly good read . The general thrust of the story is that anyone will hustle anything to survive . A handsome black boxer is forced into a life of crime after a vicious bout in the ring but is he a victim of circumstance and racist abuse or is he a survivor or is he none of those and just a guy who has fallen on hard times . Tony wants to get out of the drug business though so we feel sorry for him and sympathize with his character right through to the end we are rooting for him . Playful ...more

The laughter behind this novel is infused with blood and anarchy outrageous , maverick and ruthlessly critical .

Dark Satire Reveals the Underbelly of Multicultural 21st Century London

Crack Apple and Pop is an interesting novel. First, unlike many post modern novels that seem void of any substance, the author of this book actually has something important and unique to say about London and cosmopolitan cities like it. I prefer books, both fiction and nonfiction, which present new ideas and inspire me to think differently about topics. In that way, Crack Apple and Pop certainly succeeds.

I just finished CRACK APPLE AND POP and I must say that I am part in shock and part excited because I got to read this amazing book.

I am in shock because the unexpected ending and trust me that you will love it from the beginning `till the end. The story is a classical in the sense of "how life actually works", no pretty flowers or magic, just plain, cruel reality that presents the ups and downs of Tony's life, first a victim of a racist attack that throw him on the edge of success in a professi

I thought this book was exceptionally good for new fiction , the style, the plot, the characters and the social commentary that scores the novel . I had to give it five stars . I especially like the fact that the protagonist in the story comes from humble beginnings and that the writer satirises both liberal and conservative ideas and concepts . It's clever and very fresh.

Social realism, huh?

Here's some commonplace, everyday life examples of social realism for you:

✔ Escaping the oppressive confines of Walmart to find a refuge in the glory of the lower-middle class glamour that is Safeway.
✔ High-fiving a shirtless gang-bunger covered in unreadable tattoos who is proudly taking his baby-mama for a ride on a motorized shopping cart he just stole.
✔ Telling two very polite burly thugs that you do not wish to buy a home entertainment system that they have in the back o

I was given Crack Apple Pop as a gift. Wow! This book is absolutely amazing! It is not the predictable, cookie-cutter, formula-written best-seller that leaves you asking yourself half-way through "Haven't I already read this?" This book is a genuinely unique, down-and-dirty taste of the brutality and narcissism of the down-and-out, other-side-of-the-tracks, making-it-shaking-it, on the fringe of high-style lifestyle life. Saira Viola must be a poet at heart. The imagery in this book is astoundin ...more

I got this book at a time when I had to go to the hospital for some pretty severe abdominal pain. Nothing worked to take my mind off the pain but I have to say I was lucky to have this book with me. The story was engaging enough to get me through some of the pain and the waiting for a diagnosis. At one point, I wondered if the author was speaking directly to me, a character lay beaten, feeling terrible and it was like she was describing exactly how I was feeling - I remember thinking, someone kn ...more

I really liked this book , it was different unique and I can see the poetry echoed in the work from the poetry collections . There is a definite style to it everything is written with a flourish Viola calls it sonic scatterscript . The themes within it are relevant for the times we live in and there are some very graphic descriptions of drug taking , one night stands with strippers , and the poetry of humanity . London is ripped apart as a city with toxic race crime , class divisions and a greed ...more

Saira Viola has a knockout in her book Crack Apple and Pop. Hers is a unique voice and welcome breath of freshness in the world of new authors. A keen ear for dialogue and a command of realism dominate her writing. Viola’s style at times takes on the “disembodied poetics” of Kerouac while never losing its gritty, street-wise toughness. Her motley assortment of characters leaps off of the page, created in vivid word-portraits that funnel you through this fast-paced read.
