Tuesday - September 11, 2001 - 8:46 a.m. - New York City

Lauren Tarshis (who was on a plane that fateful morning herself) had no plans to include the attacks of September 11 in her I SURVIVED series, but after over a thousand emails from kids, after speaking to teachers and librarians, she began to understand why so many wanted this story told.

"September 11 shaped the world you were born into. It's only natural you would be curious about it. I hope my story gives you a sense of that day - the

I Survived: The Attacks Of September 11, 2001 by Lauren Tarshis presents details about the events that took place on the day that shocks the world; one boy just wants to find his dad. A powerful addition to the gripping I SURVIVED series.

My son just turned 8 and does not enjoy fictitious books. He prefers facts about true events. I happened to see this book displayed at the library on Sept. 11th and grabbed it.

When we started reading it together, he was leary. By the end, he was wanting to research more on the internet.

Lauren Tarshis wove a fictional story about a boy named Lucas, whose father was a firefighter at the time of the 9/11 attacks around the actual events of 9/11. She totally hit the mark.

I found the book very age ap

I avoided bringing this book home for my kids (who love the series) for the same reasons Lauren Tarshis explains she avoided writing it - "The memories of that day remain sharp and terrifying." I wanted to protect them from it. But I realized that this is history to them, just like the others in the series, and that while most others in the series involve natural disasters, they're at an age where they're wanting to understand the history that humans have created. The story itself explains the m ...more

**The kid and I did a reread via audio of this one for his summer reading assignment. I have to say that I enjoyed it more the second time around and the narrator was really good.**

Not my favorite of the series, but it did open up a discussion about September 11th with my son and helped him understand a little of what happened that day. I thought that the explaination of why the author wrote the book and questions and answers at the end of the book were great.

The attacks of September 11, 2001 are very personal to me. My brother, a veteran of the NYPD, was watching the beautiful blue sky, while waiting for his car to be fixed, when he heard the "All Call," to report to his precinct. He had to get his wife out of Manhattan and then go back to dig for survivors. My uncle walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to get out of the city. My cousins rode the ferry back to Staten Island while helping people who had been injured. Another cousin drove from Saratoga w ...more

There is a boy, Noah, who loves football more than anything. He gets a concussion during practice and has to go to the doctor. The doctor told him to come back afetr three weeks. He whines and complains to his parents about how unfair it is that he has to be out of football for this long. After the three weeks is up, he was hoping for good news. Unfortunately, the doctor tells him it will be longer than three weeks because this is his fourth concussion which is really bad for an 11 year old.

Personal Response- This was a very good book. It changes subject a lot in random places, but other than that it is a great true story.

Plot- The main character Lucas loves to play football. Uncle Ben and Lucas went for a walk one day in downtown New York, when all of a sudden the first plane hit the tower. Then as they ran away another plane hits the other tower. There were a lot of injury's and deaths due to the plane hitting the towers.

Characterization-Lucas is the main character that loved to

September 11 is such an emotional, difficult thing to talk about. Every year, when I talk to the fifth graders, I get teary-eyed and have a hard time getting through it. For those of us that we’re alive when it happened, it’s a time we’ll always remember. I know we can all clearly remember where we were that day and how we felt as it was happening. I was in high school and I remember watching the news with my parents. We saw the second plane hit and it was so confusing trying to comprehend what ...more

The Attacks of September 11th, 2001, by Lauren Tarshis was a great book, explaining the life of someone who lived during the time of one of the most tragic events in U.S. history. Right when the first plane hit the first tower in the story, my heart started racing. The author really made it feel like I was there when it happened. I would recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy a book written by a great author, and a thriller that will make you feel all different emotions.

I read this book with readers who struggle and/or English language learners in mind. The narrative is engaging enough for a high school student, and the language is simple enough that it can be navigated with a reasonable amount of independence.

I enjoyed the book, I Survived The Attacks of September 11, 2001 , by Lauren Tarshis, because it portrayed some of the real events that happened at that time. I felt this book had informed me on the devastating events that took place in 2001. Lauren Tarshis did a great job describing all the details in the book.

Plot.
In the beginning of the book, Lucas finds out that he can no longer play football due to the amount of concussions he has had. Lucas decides to skip school to go s

While I appreciate having these books to provide a basic explanation to my students of a variety of disastrous events, I wish Trashis felt less compelled to make the back stories of these kids so cliched. In this one, we have a main character, Lucas, who lives for football. After two concussions, his parents force him to quit. While this could have been an opportunity to have him develop other interests, particularly in light of a story about the senseless tragedy of 9/11, Lucas is out on the fi ...more

I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 by Lauren Tarshis is a realistic fiction story. I like this story because it's very realistic, and very action-packed. I also like this story because it's very weird, and interesting to think about the perspective from this boy, of these particular events. Also, just to think of these events are heart-breaking, and it's even more from this story/perspective. Another thing is that I am about this boys age, so it's hard to think about what I would've ...more

An adequate remembrance (at a child's level) of the events around 9/11. Decent enough, but not a book I'd read again.

I had two issues with this book:
1. With thousands of options for having a New York child as the main character, why create an out-of-towner that needs an over-elaborate backstory to motivate him to be near the towers at 9:00am on September 11th?

2. What's with the football concussion lesson/agenda in the book? I think 9/11 is a rich enough topic without trying to mangle up the stor

A surprisingly compelling account of the attacks on the Twin Towers, geared as an introduction on the subject for lower-end Middle Grade kids. It would be a great way to start a conversation about what happened that day and how much of an impact it had on so many people. I would likely never have picked this one up, but Charlie read it and asked me about how I remembered the day. We had a really good conversation, and then he said that he thought I might like the book (he loved it), so of course ...more

I loved this book. While it was very suspenseful, at the same time it was a feeling of you in the story. I can visually see everything that happened as the author explained the story. I thought it was actually kind of sad that the boy couldn't play football anymore. This is the reason why he was in the 9/11 attacks. he went to his uncle's and coincidently, the terrorists struck the twin towers. I personally think that the story was intense. ...more

Lauren Tarshis often wonders how she came to spend most of her waking moments thinking about disasters, as the author of the children's historical fiction series "I Survived." “original plan to write about September 11, 2001, in the I Survived series. But over the past two years, I have received more than a thousand e-mails from kids asking me to write about this topic. At school visits, there are always kids who raise their hands and ask, “Will you be writing about 9/11?” At first, my answer was always no. I was shocked that you would be so curious about that terrible day, which I had been trying to forget since it happened. I have friends who lost family members on 9/11 and others” 3 likes
“And as it quickly became clear, there were not very many survivors to find. Only fourteen people were pulled out of the rubble alive, all within the first twenty-four hours of the collapse. About 50,000 people had been working in the buildings that day. Two thousand and sixteen died. Also among the dead: 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who were in or near the buildings when they collapsed. In the months after the attacks, it was hard to imagine that life would ever go back to normal. It never will for many people, like my friend who lost her brother; like the hundreds of firefighters who have serious health problems caused by the toxic smoke and dust they breathed at Ground Zero; like the thousands who managed to escape that day, but who saw the horrors up close. Today, while the horrors of that day still linger, the city itself is more vibrant than ever. People have done their best to move forward.” 2 likes
