Short but well researched paper from the mid-twentieth century.

It was an excellent overview of the practice of hymn making in the early centuries of Christianity. Although the evidence is scanty, the author gives a general overview for either introduction into the subject or a review of the topic.

Much more enjoyable and accessible than the title might lead the casual browser to believe, this book is rich in information not only about the hymns used by early Christians but the reasons behind those choices. A fascinating topic, and one which I'm looking forward to pursuing in greater depth.
