Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.

The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.

I am convinced the Industrial Thomas Complex outsourced this piece of shit to a non-English speaking country. That is the only explanation for its craptitude. Of course, the three-year-old loves it.

The three year old I watch loves Thomas the Train. I've tried reading this one on two different occasions though and he's just not into the story. Which is not to say that he won't ever love it he's just too young to enjoy it at this time. It's one of the "older" stories so the text is smaller and the images are not from the more recent TV adaptation of the series. The best part about this book was the faces on the various trains which we tried in vain to replicate on our own faces. It's so funny watching the little guy try to scrunch up his face so that he looks "cross" it usually comes out as the "say cheese" smiley face.

This books contains the following stories:

Donald and Douglas - Twin engines have arrived to help out, but are they a help or a hindrance?

The Deputation - The other engines are afraid Donald and Douglas will be sent away and decide to do something about it.

The Diseasel - A diesel engine shows up and Bill and Ben decide to play a trick on him.

Edward's Exploit - Edward is one of the oldest engines and some of the other engines don't think he's any good anymore.

This book was read for Wesley’s summer reading club. Wesley is my (soon to be five year old) son. This review is what we used for his reading club.
***

Wesley loves the Thomas shows, but I have a hard time getting him interested in the stories.
