Nearly immediately after starting the story I was hooked. I liked Niki and Kyle, their interactions were both fun and touching to watch, but I especially liked Marcy (Niki's roommate and best friend). Marcy's matchmaking was adorable and I loved how things played out with that. I did find a couple of things strange, (view spoiler), but for the most I ...more

Niki Turner has managed to shove the pain of her past far enough out of her life to create a successful career as a software engineer. She’s hard hitting and focused and, as the novel opens, is on the verge of landing a large project with her dream client, Heliotronics. In fact, she’d be able to hold her life together if her roommate would quit trying to get her married off.

But who knew that Kyle Jacobs was back in town, and working for Heliotronics? He was the jerk who tormented her mercilessly

I was surprised that the main conflict, if you will, is resolved by the middle of the book. When it was resolved, I looked at how far I read and it was only half done. Part of me wanted to stop reading, but the other part was curious what else the author could write about. It turns out the relationships in the book are also resolved. I do agree with other reviewers that some of the premise of the two girls being "best friends" haven't told each other some very basic things that have happened in ...more

Has someone ever treated you badly and you've had a hard time forgiving that person? Have you ever had a boss who had it out for you for no apparent reason? Have you ever wondered why God lets bad things happen to good people? Have you ever disbelieved in the "people can change" notion? For a free kindle book, this was pretty good! I was curious about the contemporary christian romance genre and was surprised just how much I enjoyed it. It's like all the fun of romance without the smut and shame. Moreover I found myself relating to the main lady. I actually hated her a lot in the beginning....probably because I see myself in her: workaholic who keeps men at a distance. I wasn't really feeling it for the first 10% but then i got crazy in to it. Like, I was sneaking a few pages i ...more
I could not put this down, probably the hopeless romantic inside of me, but once I became invested in the two main characters I had to know that things worked out. I wasn't sure what to think of Niki in the beginning but as I got to know her more I felt drawn to her, then Kyle enters and I enjoyed the interaction between the two of them. The quips back and forth between them were great. I liked how Kyle tried to draw Niki out of her shell without being pushy about it, he was patient when he need ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed Nickels, a Contemporary Christian Romance by Karen Baney. The connection to the characters took place quickly, as I found myself drawn in by the play between them. Ms. Baney has created a group of characters who compliment each other and make for a fun read. Though both Kyle and Nikki are dealing with tragedy and loss, they are fun to be around. The pace of the novel kept me interested, moving forward and made for a quick read. The conflicts within the story maintained just ...more

I enjoyed this book very much. I usually like historical fiction. This was a contemporary subject matter that I enjoyed because it is one I am unfamiliar with. I appreciated her imperfect and realistic Christian young adults dealing with struggles they faced. Well done!

This is a clean Christian romance that stands alone. I wasn't sure I would like it at first because I'm not into computers or code but I absolutely loved this book! It drew me in from the start and kept my attention throughout the whole book. I loved it. I will definitely seek out more books from this author. I read it all in one sitting.

Sometimes love comes from the past. Sometimes it is not what we expect. This story is one of trust, forgiveness, love, and reconciliation of the past within ourselves. It was frustrating sometimes with the characters as they acted realistic enough that I would want to slap them, but they always seemed to come back to level ground.

This is a story of faith as well. What I really enjoyed is how the book did not sugar coat it all. The characters were tempted. They faced issues and struggled. They m

Niki Turner thought she had life all figured out. When God took her parents and her brother Jack, she felt that if she just didn't keep anyone close, she wouldn't lose anyone else or have to deal with the grief that has bound her personal life for the last 8 years.

She has vowed to just remain friends with her room mate Marcy and focus the remainder of her time at her job, Hamilton Production Solutions, as a software engineer. But Marcy had a goal this year, and that was to make sure that love fo

predictable, but cute contemporary romance.
Niki has never quite recovered from the many losses in her past. Friend Marcy tries too hard to marry her off, while Niki seeks only success and approbation for her undoubted computing skills. Meanwhile Kyle, suffering his own losses, prays for second chances without realizing what he might find. This story starts slowly, setting up characters and situations, but finds its speed when estranged friends finally fall into step with each other.

In Nickels by Karen Baney one finds three dimensional characters. They deal with tragic loss, friendship, family, work, and romance. Tight relationships are born from everyday life activities. Niki Turner's story suddenly remixes with Kyle Jacobs when Niki accepts coveted software engineer position. Kyle who was recently hired as the helicopter test pilot is battling war scars physically and emotionally. Now he must learn to trust Niki's engineering knowledge with his life.

Okay, I really enjoyed this one! At first I wasn't sure the life of a software engineer would be all that riveting, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually quite interesting. While Niki's job is rather technical, I felt it was handled very well and written so that anyone can follow. :)

Niki is a great character, very realistic with past hurts and wounds that still haunt her; it's encouraging to see her grow and work through her issues. I also enjoyed Kyle as well, he's sort of a

I am looking forward to reading more by Karen Baney, and I would recommend her books to anyone who wants a thought provoking read.

There is a little bit of everything in this book, and it kept me interested from start to finish. The characters are well thought out, and I really enjoyed the interaction between them. I

Nickels by Karen Baney, is the story of Niki Turner who is a young, professional software engineer. Her career is going incredibly well, but her personal life is struggling. She has issues in her past that she has not dealt with that continue to make it difficult for her to form any personal relationships, except for one best friend. Then someone from her past comes back and catches her completely off guard.

I enjoyed Nickels, by Karen Baney, but the further I got into the book, the less that I found myself enthralled. The foundation story is good, what with a likeable Niki who we follow through the challenges of working as a software engineer in a primarily male dominated field to her troubled (absent) personal life. I found all of the characters to be "real", grounded people who weren't just "plastic people"; they had flaws and issues but were genuinely good for the most part, and trying to be bet ...more

What a great personification of a lost soul searching for God, but after all she’s lost, Niki’s floundering is totally understandable. That’s what makes this such a wonderful story – she’s so real – but so broken. Ms. Baney does a great job of bringing her characters to life – making them multi dimensional.

Niki certainly has earned her way in a market dominated by men. She knows her own strengths – and weaknesses - and knows the meaning of teamwork, too. What she doesn’t know is how to have a he

I appreciated the story being Christian based... how someone can change from their past & show that their lives are changed.

I really loved the character of Kyle. Know a lot of women would want to have him in real life. & while Niki had horrible tragedies in her life, I was glad to see her find some happiness.

I did enjoy the book, but will say, it seemed way too long for me. Sort of dragging the story out & had parts that I felt like I just kept reading over & over. (water games i

I found this book free for my Kindle on Amazon. The title seemed a bit weird to me, but when I read the description, I thought I would give it a try. It is definitely a Christian Romance, and I love Christian romances. They aren't raunchy and have a good plot line.

Niki is a software engineer who has lost her entire family. Her parents to a drunk driver and her brother in war (Afghanistan). She lets her work rule her life because she is afraid to get close to anyone for fear of losing them as wel

I always love when i can relate to a character in a book on multiple levels. Niki is a twenty something looking for something more to fill the void in her life. She works too much and has a hard past that torments her relationships with men. I like the fact that Baney includes themes of forgiveness and shedding our old and our past but also using those experiences to witness to and love the people we connect with in life. This story was very well thought out and I enjoyed watching the romance be ...more

I read (and only got 75% of the why through) this one before the Pioneer series by this same author, only discovering they were by the same author *after* finishing the first book of the Pioneer series! I was shocked! The quality of character development and plot depth was profoundly different between the two—I couldn't even finish this book; it was entirely too predictable and just....devoid of something. I don't even know what.

It still amazes me that such different books came from the same aut

Through Nickels, Karen Baney has done a great job of bringing to light the life and realities of a software engineer who works for a defense company. Lives depend on the job getting done right. And that's where Kyle comes in. Forget that in high school he used to torment Nickels to the point of harassment. They now have to figure out a way to work together. She's fine with that, so long as he stays in his sector. The problem is, their worlds keep colliding!

Nickels is a fun, clean, romantic read

This was my first read by Karen Baney and I enjoyed it. It was a little slow for me, but I'm glad I continued because soon I was flipping page after page trying to see what would happen in Nicole Turner's life.

Nicole, Niki to everyone, is all alone in the world, or so it seems. Then she meets a blast from the past who challenges her beliefs on everything that has shaped her into who she is.

It's a great story and I would recommend it to avid readers as well as people who aren't Christians, I thin

Excellent storyline, well researched and flows beautifully. A definite read in my opinion.

The characters are strong and well-rounded. The author really pulls you immediately into the story with good descriptions and characterizations that made me feel like I was really there. The author also does a good job integrating the faith message without over doing it. The romance was expertly done and never taken too far, but she really makes you feel the chemistry between a man and a woman.
