This is a great introduction to media literacy. It covers the basic concepts and terms and applies them to a wide variety of media. Several lesson plans are included for various subjects, so it's easy to see how the principles of media literacy can be applied across the curriculum.

Provides theory as well as specific examples & strategies to incorporate critical thinking and analysis of visual media. Aimed a bit more towards upper elementary and high school, I also found plenty that I could incorporated into all elementary grades. In fact, I already have. It has influenced how I talk to my students and how I direct their attention to certain aspects of images, as well as how I question them to explain, "Why do you think that?" or "What makes you think that?" or "What evidence did you find?"
A worthwhile read that will help teachers in their efforts to implement the Common Core and create students who can think rather than students who simply recite endless, random facts or repeat what they think the teacher wants to hear.
A caution: be ready to have students disagree with you - but this will help teach them how to do that respectfully and with valid reasoning!

Excellent book on media literacy, and the many aspects of it. It’s a little bit dated, but still extremely useful. Has lots of examples of lesson plans, units, integrations, and real conversations with students.
