Should all Christians, especially evangelicals, hold on to the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son? What is lost if we don't? Theologian Kevin Giles defends the historically orthodox and ecumenical doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son of God. He argues on biblical, historical and theological bases that, given its fundamental meaning, this formulation is ...more

Apparently, for several years, several prominent voices within evangelicalism have sought to undermine and flat-out dismiss a significant doctrine of the historic Christian faith: the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son. This doctrine explains how the Father and the Son can both be God, yet one is the Father and one is the Son.

A helpful rounding out to his two previous books on related subjects, though this one does more directly address the issue of eternal procession more squarely. (CF notes from _Trinity and Subordinationism_ and _Jesus and the Father_) While this is a good and helpful book and IS worthy of engaging, I can't but feel as if he has made his point already - this book is only beating a dead horse. But maybe that horse (or those horses) need to be beat.

Great arguments for the doctrine and a helpful and fascinating account of its historical development. Treatment of eternal subordination is perhaps a bit unbalanced, but one's view on egalitarianism/complementarianism tends to strongly bias on the issue of submission within the Trinity.
