Readers of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime series will find much that is familiar in Rafael Reig's Blood on the Saddle. Based in a Spain where petroleum has run out and the Americans invaded, there are broken families and escaped literary characters from books. There's a company that appears to dominate the economic skyline by owning the patent on virtually every genetic modification around. There is some sad, sad, shagging. There's alcoholism, and there's some sparkling humour. This is a rather p ...more

Nice quick read, enjoyable but for all the blurring of conventions that the author is at when it comes to genre; there's no such tricksiness when comes to gender. Lots of tired macho stereotypes and femme fatales that I was waiting to get undermined, but no. Knocked a star off for that limitation. If you can give that a pass and you like pulp fiction then this would be a good choice to get you through a week of bus journeys.

clashing genres, a light and irreverent touch, i didn't have a clue what was going on, and the characters were forgettable. "Gun, with Occasional Music" by Johnathan Lethem is a less ambitious and more successful attempt at this genre mixing. Still, it was often jaunty and witty.

a real hoot, madrid after oil, everybody rides bicycles and the ship channel from valencia at ends atocha. plus a nice little mass murder mystery and genetic engineer gone wrong. good translation of a lark. lots of angst and booze.

Great stuff. Inspiring creative story-telling. An envisioned future that desn't try to beat you over the head with how "futuristic" it is.

While they're reading they want to finish as soon as possible, so as to be able to show off that they've already read it. Another notch in the sixgun.
