I had not heard of Kate Richards O'Hare until a friend lent me this book to read for a Wichita NOW project. O'Hare, born in 1896, was part of the Kansas Populist/Socialist movement that took place in the early part of the 20th century. A temperance advocate as a teenager, she turned her energies to unionism and socialism after she began to work as a machinist in her father's machine shop. She joined the machinists union at a time when women were not welcomed as union members. She was inspired to ...more
