The Waxwork is a ghost—horror short story written by the British author Alfred McLelland Burrage also known as A.M Burrage. The short story was published in 1931.

When left alone at night in a waxwork museum full of dreadful figures with tainted pasts, a man faces the horror of discovering one of those figures has come to life. Or something of the kind. Terrorized by swift movements in the shadows, the reveal is slow. The murmuring voice that seems to be in his head, a trick of imagination, a result of fear is a great construct for the climax. As a psychology buff, I loved this story. Paranoia, delusion and phobia wrapped in a creative bundle. 5 on 5.

A short story. I see that it was dramatized on television by Alfred Hitchcock. It would make a good television story.

Alfred McLelland Burrage (1889-1956) was a British writer. He was noted in his time as an author of fiction for boys which he published under the pseudonym Frank Lelland, including a popular series called "Tufty". Burrage is now remembered mainly for his horror fiction.
