I read this novel because I loved "Canyon Passage" filmed from a different Haycox novel that is sadly not yet available on Kindle. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised and delighted both with the quality of the descriptive writing and the depth of characterization, neither of which I was necessarily expecting from a Western. This was a touch and go 4 star. Too much detail and too many characters for a 200 page western , or so I thought the first 150 pages, but then the detail paid off, I felt like I was reading a screen play. still to many characters who had little to do with story but a very good last 50 pages. This was my first Haycox book , but have three more on hand so will read them this year. NOt a typical western writer.
