Three stars: This book is exactly as advertised. Numerous short stories perfect for a toilet read.
I picked up a copy of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Presents Flush Fiction, expecting a quirky book of short stories, and that is exactly what I got. Now, I don't know how much time many of you have to spend perched on the crapper leisurely reading, but if you do then you might be interested in this book. I personally, am one of those people who has two young toddlers. Just trying to escape to the bathroom to quickly do my business is often tricky. Inevitably, more often than not, I end up on the potty listening to one or both of my kids pounding and crying at the door. There is no way, I could take the time to sit and read. Don't let that deter you if you are in a similar situation. This book can be read whenever, wherever, and no it is not filled with bathroom humor. In fact, the stories range over a wide range of interesting topics. Some of the stories are funny and entertaining, while others are strange, and some will have you scratching your head, wondering what on earth. I am not going to promise that you will love each and every story in here, but what you will find is a collection of eclectic stories, perfect for when you are in the mood for a light, quick read. For instance, this would be great to read while waiting for the bus, or at the doctor's office. This a fun book to have on hand when you need a mindless, short read. Each story is under a thousand words so you can easily read one in five minutes or less If you are the type of person that likes to have something in the bathroom, pick up a copy. Uncle John's has a whole array of bathroom reading books to suit your fancy. A fast read would be what you would need if you are the type that likes to read while sitting on a port a potty or non flushable outhouse, (believe it or not, I personally have seen people carrying newspapers into the outhouse). I can't imagine you would care to sit and read while inhaling the odor of Outhouse au jour, but if you do then Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Presents Flush Fiction, might be the perfect book for you.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair review.
Flush fiction is a collection of 88 short stories that can be read in one sitting! It contains stories of all genres: horror, humour, romance,… The publisher scoured the whole US for authors who wanted to share their stories for this publication. The result is a nice book full of little stories for readers with little time!
I have to admit that I didn’t read or finish all the stories, because they simply weren’t my genre. Horror, for example can be very entertaining, but not for me, so I skipped them. Whereas other stories made me laugh out loud because of the brilliant ending and the use of humour. It’s logical, I think, that you won’t like every story, but this book is something for everyone, even if you don’t like reading. A perfect gift! The stories were really short, some half of a page, others four pages. I really liked that, but I only read one a time. This makes that it takes a long time to read them all, but as the name says, it’s perfect to lay your book in the bathroom and to read one short story every time you’re there. The story I liked the most was the third one, Safety Drill by M. Garrett Bauman. It was about a father who was always afraid that there would happen something terrible to him and his family and his way to protect his children was hilarious. Another story, Mr. Agreeable by Kirk Nesset, was also very funny. I think the title says enough and these are just two of the eighty-eight wonderful stories!
Designed to sit next to your toilet for those times you need reading material, Flush Fiction is 88 short short stories to read during your visits. The stories range from about 4 pages to less than 1. All quite entertaining in their way. This is a tough book to review since there are so many stories and none of them alike. I can imagine it sitting in book racks next to toilets everywhere. There is something for everyone and if you don’t like a particular story, it goes so quick that you nearly forget you read it. This is the only fictional work put together by Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader – the remaining works are short segments of non-fiction such as history and science. It’s a fun read and definitely not designed to be sit and read in one sitting.
This is such a fun book. So many short stories, some shorter than others, put together in one binding specifically for the Bathroom Readers of the world.
I'm not a bathroom reader, I'm an anytime reader but this was still a quick, quirky read. And easy to read at the same time as other books for people that have trouble doing that. Personally, I can read multiple books at the same time but I know some people struggle to keep the storylines and characters straight in their heads, so this is ideal.
Some of the stories are a couple of paragraphs, others go on for a few pages but there's something in here for every bowel movement (Sorry! But it had to be said).
However, very few stuck out as "wow" stories. There were even some that left me feeling either confused or that I wanted to hurry ahead to the next story. A couple, I even skimmed. To do that with flash fiction seemed, well, indecent, but there wasn't enough there for me to grab on to.
All in all, it was good reading, and much less than a waste of time. For I learned something from each story, either positive or negative, and that will help me to become a better writer.
I really wanted to give it 5 stars because my short-short slightly humorous mystery is in Flush Fiction:88 and I want to elevate my self esteem in any way I can, however, modesty must prevail.
