The American Civil War caused upheaval and massive private bereavement, but the years 1861-1865 also defined a great nation.

This book provides a concise introduction to events from the secession to the end of the war. It focuses on The social history associated with the war is dealt with alongside the familiar military and political events. This inclusive approach allows the reader to consider equally the history of men and women, blacks and whites in the conflict. It deals with both the Union and the Confederacy, integrating the latest literature on the war and society into a clear account. The book concludes with an assessment of emancipation, the rebuilding of the economy, and the war's consequences.

An array of primary documents supports the text, together with a chronology, glossary and Who's Who guide to key figures.

Una sintesi efficace della Guerra di Secessione, condensata in meno di duecento pagine comprese le carte, la bibliografia e un piccolo dizionario dei nomi. Il taglio dato al libro da spazio, e molto, alla società del tempo, o meglio alle due società antagoniste che vennero in conflitto, alle varie categorie sociali e alle economie. Non è facile fare un lavoro di questo tipo senza scadere nel manuale scolastico che elencherebbe altrimenti una serie di battaglie e una di sfilza di generali più o meno competenti. Anzi, se non fosse per la cronaca degli avvenimenti bellici aggiunta alla fine, si farebbe molta difficoltà a seguire lo svolgersi della guerra.
E' quindi un po' un assaggio introduttivo cui, volendo, potrebbero seguire ulteriori opere più specialistiche.

Agile libretto che inquadra a grandi linee la guerra civile americana. In poche pagine vengono evidenziati con chiarezza le principali cause del conflitto oltre che individuati gli attori e le forze in campo. Un buon viatico per approfondire la lettura su un avvenimento che ha avuto conseguenze decisive sula storia dei secoli successivi a livello mondiale.

Not a particularly outstanding title in a normally well-written series. The campaign chapters are altogether too brief in scope and stripped-down to the point of colourlessness. Politics and domestic affairs are covered to a fuller extent, but it's concluding remarks are cryptic to the point of irrelevance

As a 'limey' of many years standing, Mr Mitchell's book was an ideal introduction to a subject I knew very little about.
I read the book in a day, only 100 pages, but I learned a lot about the politics of Abe Lincoln, and the republican north at war with a democratic south. The book introduces many personalities of the time, political, military etc., and also covers some of the social issues. I only gave this 3* because of the concise nature, but very clearly written chronology and who's who guide.

Una buona introduzione alla guerra civile. Tratta sia gli aspetti militari che quelli politici del conflitto, anche se con una leggera predilezione per quest'ultimi.
I temi non vengono affrontati in profondità, ma il testo rimane comunque utile per capire a grandi linee quest'importante evento.

La guerra civile americana viene raccontata brevemente, ma si introducono i diversi aspetti che la caratterizzano
