Betsy has tended her difficult, charming retired opera singer mother for most of her life, pausing only to marry a difficult, charming man. Younger sister Margot and her two sons visit from London, along with her beautiful daughter-in-law. But now mother is dead--surprising even her doctor--and it's time to read the will. Also on hand is Tessa Crichton, who has been left a valuable ring. When first one death and then another roil the family, Tessa is on hand to investigate.
My how these books have grown on me. Found a coupla used mass market paperbacks of books in this series last year, but quickly found out out how generally unavailable they are today. Then I discovered these Dean Street Press reprints, and as I like to do, began at #1… They’re sort of hip and flip, Mod Squad perhaps, and I’ll compare them to the Dorothy Dunnett series featuring Johnson Johnson (the Dolly yacht books), I’ve gotten hooked on both. Here, actress Tessa Chrichton (our heroine) goes to attend a funeral of an old friend, the one-time big opera star Maud Stirling. Maud was a bit of a mentor to Tessa in her beginning acting days, and she wants to pay respects. Tessa and Maud’s large family gather at the old Victorian Rectory that has served as Maud’s residence in her later years. It quickly becomes obvious to Tessa that all isn’t well between some of the family, moreso when it’s learned Maud changed her will just before her death. Then some family jewels are discovered to be missing, it’s learned Maud’s death may have been “assisted” and then her daughter-in-law plunges to death from an upstairs window. As always, Tessa begins her own inquires, police be damned. This short book is a fast read, and a most enjoyable one.
