One of the most original psychoanalysts after Freud, Karen Horeny pioneered such now-familiar concepts as alienation, self-realization, and the idealized image, and she brought to psychoanalysis a new understanding of the importance of culture and environment.
In this book, Karen Horney explores the basic structure of neuroses in the context of their cultural assumptions.

Pretty much everyone you know, including yourself, is described in detail here, sadly. Should be taught in grade schools.

"The feeling of power, for example, may in a normal person be born of the realization of his own superior strength, whether it be physical strength or ability, mental capacities, maturity or wisdom. Or his striving for power may be connected with some particular cause: family, political or professional group, native land, a religious or scientific idea. The neurotic striving for power, however, is born out of anxiety, hatred and feelings of inferiority. To put it categorically, the normal ...more

One of the best books I've ever read

This books was recommended to me by a good friend of mine. Really easy to read, incredible complex and deep concepts explained easily and in a simple way. Will definitely review my highlights and reread some chapters in the future.

Recomended to everyone: we'll all find lots of knowledge in it and resemblance to our personal lives and of those people that surround us.

Goodreads tells me that I added this book in October 2015, but I'm fairly certain that I've been reading it since 2013, slowly.

The original version of this book was published in 1937 and this reissue is from 1964, though it seems to have been printed recently. I have to say that I was surprised to find how relevant this book seems to be to the psychological challenges of modern life. I would have thought that many of the issues that we have today have developed relatively recently, such as for

A revelation to me, explaining neurosis and its manifestations in accessible language that seems as relevant now as ever (and this is a 70+ year old book). I read this in the hope that it would offer me some insights into aspects of my own character and it has definitely done so. I think I will re-read some bits before this goes back to the library and/or buy a copy of my own for future reference. I'll be looking out for more of Karen Horney's work for sure.

The cultural dimension, and some

Jej ...more

A very interesting and informative read about how anxiety and neurosis can negatively affect our day to day functioning. What is also unfortunate is that neurotic individuals may often not even know about their anxiety and suffering, and try to hide their issues unconsciously by indulging in unhealthy habits. I myself was able to identify some issues with my beliefs and want to work on them.

A very sobering read, one that everyone should read as it provokes much self-reflection and analysis. As the writer explains patterns of anxiety that are present in all of us manifesting in different ways, broken down in a few categories, as we read through, we can start seeing and pointing to people we know, but if we allow it to go deeper, ourselves and our patterns of behavior. It has brought certain explanations of my own behavior that have initiated a restorative process not only for me, ...more

read Chinese translation version because of our school library's poor collection. According to this book, my personality is quite a neurotic one, which makes me panicked. Some observations and views are too acute to bear, but I always prefer to know and to face the truth as long as it is true. Very insightful and enlightening book. I do agree that the conflicts in our hearts are deeply rooted in the contradictions in our culture.

Written in 1937 so expectedly a bit dated, but contains a lot of valuable, powerful ideas that seem very ahead of her time

"I do not believe that one can understand any severe neurosis without recognizing the paralyzing hopelessness which it contains."

"Through the eclipse of large areas of the self, by repression and inhibition as well as by idealization and externalization, the individual loses sight of himself; he feels, if he does not actually become, like a shadow without weight and

Pravarti ir sunki knyga. Viena psichoanalizės motinų (vieta Jūsų pokštui), Karen Horney, atsispyrusi nuo pradžioje už pagrindą paimtų Froido kontrapunktų, vysto teoriją apie neurozę, argumentuodama jau iš esmės ne biologine, bet kultūrinės aplinkos įtaka žmogaus asmenybės įtrūkių formavimuisi, taip pat perbraižo tėvų vaidmenį vaikų neurozėms (nepriežiūra vietą užleidžia abejingumui)

Karen Horney was a German psychoanalyst. Her theories questioned some traditional Freudian views, particularly his theory of sexuality, as well as the instinct orientation of psychoanalysis and its genetic psychology. As such, she is often classified as Neo-Freudian.
