From 1914 to 1918 she studied psychiatry at Berlin-Lankwitz, Germany, and from 1918 to 1932 taught at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. Outstanding. But I do have to place some caveats: This is not a book for the light reader browsing through the "self help" section. It's an intricately articulate and researched analysis of human being's dysfunctional mechanisms. You do not need to have a background in psychology... but you do have to have intellectual endurance.

Keep in mind that this book was written 60 years ago. The language is a bit outdated. It was written by a woman who was trying to be taken seriously in a very male domi

I usually am suspicious of female authors, especially when it comes to psychology. It may be sexist to say so, but I have always find the gap between the different modes of thinking to be unbridgeable. This book was a pleasant surprise.
The author's main contention is that neurosis is a peculiarly human affliction and that it takes the form of what we would call the "personality." The author argues that this personality is, in reality, a pseudo-self that spends its valuable energies on pseudo-go

Ahhh! This book was AMAZING! Everybody should read it right now! It will terrify you and amaze you and fill you with hope. It is like she looks in your head, writes down what is in there - and does not give up on you.

Heavy on the scholarship, but holy crap...if you have any kind of neurosis/neuroses, you'll be reading your life's story within Karen Horney's analysis of neuroses, in general. Her books made me understand and that's all you really need to do, in the end. She makes sense of our inner conflicts, great and small. This won't solve the problem, but it will shine a light on it, and that has made all the difference.

*Audiobook review*
You know when you read (listen :P) a book and wonder if the author has been spying on you for your entire life? I think this one will do that to many people.

The narrator, Heather Henderson, was surprisingly absorbing with this type of text. If only my school teachers presented like her in all those dry subjects, I would have way better grades.

This was a very good introduction to neurotic behaviors and a very interesting story of my life. But who is to say the neurotic is doing

More like a three. When I look at some of the books I've rated, I sometimes find myself wondering whether I really did rate it at such level. It's a marvel how our mind changes its views overtime.

----------

A bit overdone, overreaching, and overextended. For example, her idea of 'pride' is so broad that it also is supposed to account as a contributing factor in the homosexual's 'inhibition' towards women and 'preference for one's own sex'. There is no shortage of kooky psychoanalytic babble in th

Wow. This 1950 book is an epic work of Neo-Freudian Psychoanalysis. It is far less scientifically grounded than most of what I've read. It is based on Dr. Horney's vast psychoanalytic case files, but lacks the experimental rigor that I have come to expect from more modern psychological treatises. Instead, there are astoundingly large numbers of 'assertions.' "The neurotic does this, wants that, feels this." Many of these assertions rang true, but could have easily been explained via other means. ...more

Just admit it. We are all neurotics to a certain degree. This is far more useful than any self help book. What a shame it is so little visible. Since it was written in 50s last century, many people could have benefited from reading it ... if it only wasnt pushed off the shelves by "get-it-all-easily-and-now" crap. If you think of a real change, do not get carried away by funky manipulations of self help gurus, but go deep and far to yourself. Karen Horney will be a kind, understanding guide to y ...more

This is a brilliant book! Horney is classified with the neo-Freudians like Erich Fromm. Her analysis of personality types with respect to aggression in this book is worth the price.

This was a really tough book to listen to, with a hard to follow logic and difficult wording at times, but it was a huge eye opener.

The book speaks about how neurosis may affect ones life and saps away his/her energy to build a never to be reached super ego. I enjoyed parts of this book while others were too convoluted for me to follow while driving. Nevertheless, it pointed specific properties a neurotic person has and how it can limit their potential and affect his relationship with others.

This is a dense book, prepare yourself. Although, not nearly as time consuming and futile as analytic psychotherapy must have been before Karen Horney. Hundreds of pages and not one mention of Daddy's penis -- how refreshing.

Jokes aside, this is an interesting albeit weighty book. Expect a lot of raised eyebrows if you're not familiar with psychoanalytic jargon. Given the paradigm its also pretty light on ACTUAL empirical scientific evidence, but much of what is said does make a wonderful sort o

Somebody recommended me to read this book (in reference to Alice Miller's books, which i really liked) and i'm glad i decided to pick it up. Even though it's deemed to be a heavy-reading material--and i did feel lost at some parts--It was not to the point that got me frustrated. In fact, I always looked forward to spare the time to continue reading this until the last page. That's just how good of a job the author did on writing this piece of analytic work.

Karen Horney was a German psychoanalyst. Her theories questioned some traditional Freudian views, particularly his theory of sexuality, as well as the instinct orientation of psychoanalysis and its genetic psychology. As such, she is often classified as Neo-Freudian.
