Pandemonium: Stories of the Apocalypse is the first anthology from Pandemonium Fiction edited by Jared Shurin and Anne C. Perry, the fine folks who also bring us the wonderful Pornokitsch blog. This collection of stories is based on a clear inspiration, the apocalyptic works of the 19th century painter John Martin; the book appeared to coincide with a large exhibition of Martin's work at the Tate Britain. The result is a collection of strong stories marked by their diversity of genre and the ...more

This is a great collection of apocalypse based short stories. If I'm honest my visions of the apocalypse are often based around the scenes from the Fallout games (which I love) and that's kind of what I was expecting. (Radiation, empty Wastelands, Mutants, gangs of marauders etc)

Its not what I got and I'm grateful for that. These stories all approach the apocalypse in very different ways. There are some set just as the apocalypse is occurring and shows just how individuals can view the

This was an awesome collection. Ever story in it is good, though some stories really stand out and make me want to hunt down all works by those authors. Still none of it was bad. It is a heavy subject, maybe more so for a religious person, but a good read.

Faves for me were:

"Chislehurst Messiah" by Lauren Beukes
"Deluge" by Kim Lakin-Smith
"Postapocalypse" by Sam Wilson
"Not the End of the World" by Sophia McDougall

I was familiar with Lauren Beukes work, and already a fan, as well as Sam Wilson,

It was alright. I liked some of the stories better than others, but reading the book from beginning to end you can't help but feel that it is one fire-and-brimstone story after another. It gets a little bit tedious at times. I know, I know, the book is called Pandemonium, but still...

The debut anthology from editors Anne Perry and Jared Shurin shows a great breadth of fiction and a keen editorial eye for what makes a fine collection of stories. My full review for this title will appear shortly at www.jonoliverwriter.blogspot.com

A really interesting anthology with a good variety of different stories of varying styles.
Unlike some anthologies there didn't seem to be any 'dud' stories in this one and quite a few of them were quite brilliant.

Some great stories. Lauren Beukes' was a highlight (unsurprisingly). One that I really didn't like, but I won't single out that author!
