Alcott Sisters #1

Hot Chocolate

Rate this book
Hot Chocolate by Dawn Greenfield Ireland is the first book in The Alcott Family Adventures series. Meet the middle-aged, eccentric Alcott Madge, Lila Mae and Dorothea, heiresses to the Alcott Chocolate fortune and mavens of Houston’s elite River Oaks. Madge ambushes Lila Mae with Dorothea’s manipulative she can’t care for Bernie, their 92-year old father, any longer. Lila Mae explodes in a hissy fit—she had warned Dorothea years ago that they should put Bernie in an assisted living center. Robert, Lila Mae’s astrologer, warns of impending problems and he’s rarely wrong. The sisters call a meeting with Walter Branson, their solicitor. They discuss Bernie’s nurse Bambi Chaline, a blonde bombshell who looks more like a hooker than a nurse. The sisters fear that Bambi has her sights on being the next Mrs. Alcott and the need to separate her from their father is at critical mass. Arrangements are made for Bernie to be transferred over to Lake Sides Assisted Living Center in the Uptown Galleria area and a severance package is drawn up for Bambi. Out from under the ever watchful eye of Dorothea, Bernie takes to the Lake Sides social scene like a butterfly to sugar-water. He’s the best dressed senior and chases the nurses relentlessly. He may be 92, but he’s a handful. Jimmy Ray Chaline, Bambi’s bowling alley husband, is enraged that Bambi was let go. He hires ambulance chaser Mark Slade to file a lawsuit for wrongful termination. Bambi had been more than satisfied with her bonus, letters of recommendation and praise from the Alcott clan. She does not want to sue her former employer and the Alcott chocolate empire. Jimmy Ray’s eyes dazzle as Mark Slade convinces him that the court will award Bambi millions. The judge dismisses the suit as frivolous and it is thrown out of court further fueling Jimmy Ray’s rage. He’s shocked when the callous attorney demands his bill be paid upon receipt. When Jimmy Ray fails to return home from the bowling alley that night, a series of events unfold that shocks the entire Alcott family and their extended members. Who killed Jimmy Ray Chaline? Was it Bambi, his innocent looking wife? Could it have been Tilly, Walter Branson’s half-looped niece who had a mysterious relationship with Jimmy Ray? Or was it Dorothea Divine – the weapon came from her house where Bambi worked for three years. The Alcott clan is in turmoil and no amount of chocolate will soothe their nerves until they solve the mystery and Dorothea is off the hook.

Book Quotes:

“Are you going for the “I’m sixty-six and have Alzheimer’s so I won’t remember this ensemble tomorrow’ look?” Lila Mae threw at her older sister.

“That beauty queen title was forty-plus years ago, Lila Mae. You are no longer classified as a ‘girl.’ You qualify for all of the senior citizen discounts, which you refuse, I might add,” Madge heckled.

“Madge, our baby sister is a middle-aged woman who doesn’t give a rat’s tail about anyone else’s feelings. At last count, she had a staff of twelve, including the two alternating nurses. I think she can quit the hand-wringing and make her bridge club without missing a beat,” Lila Mae fumed.

…she arrived at the second floor landing, Dorothea was greeted with a distasteful and horrific sight: rear cleavage – the butt crack peering out of a pair of very wide jeans…Let me be blunt…you either need to wear underwear, or secure your shirt inside your pants with a good-fitting belt,” Dorothea broiled.

Bambi’s little white nurse’s cap sat atop her head of curly blonde, shoulder-length hair. She wore a form-fitting dress, unbuttoned to show ample cleavage, along with a micro hemline, white panty hose, and white wedge shoes that seemed to Dorothea to be more appropriate for a movie role – or a hooker -0 than Bambi’s professional status.
“Giant plops of cow poop’s getting ready to hit the fan.” Lila Mae said.

The gang arrived at Dorothea’s like a motorcade – three Bentleys followed by a Mercedes, a Cadillac, a Lexus, and a Volvo. Car doors opened and shut.

“So, people drink at happy hour,” Madge insisted. She turned in her seat to Amelia. “What do you think, Amelia? Is this enough of a situation to warrant a drink?” “I say we get wasted,” Amelia said.

Everyone made a bee-line for their purses, jackets, and hats and headed out the door. “Chance, you lead the way,” Henry called as he opened the driver’s door of his Mercedes. Dorothea dove into the front passenger side, and Joseph and Maria jumbled…the cars made a half moon around Bambi’s front door, like a wagon train making a circle…

My Review:

Hot Chocolate is a light-hearted Southern comedy. The Alcott sisters are the epitome of Southern culture. They are each other’s fiercest enemy and closest companion.

One of my all-time favorite shows is Designing Women. The Alcott sisters, Dorothea, Lila Mae, and Madge could be the Sugarbaker women. Picture Suzanne Sugarbaker every time you read something about Dorothea and you’ll be rolling on the floor laughing every time she hollars and faints.

From bimbo nurses to the local bowling alley owner being murdered; a convoy of Mercedes, Bentleys, and Lexus’s driving from one end of Texas to another with phone buzzing between the three Alcott sisters, their lawyer, husbands, detective boyfriend, and maids and butlers. Money in envelopes; safety deposit boxes; it just doesn’t get better than this.

The plot is well written and from the very first page there is no doubt these women live chocolate as much as the company they own makes chocolate. From the cocoa colored Bentleys to the hot chocolate they start their day with, this book is full of chocolate – what could be better than that?! The characters were dazzling creatures and full of spunk making the book an enjoyable read. I found no grammatical errors and the book ended with a surprise you won’t see coming, a definite plus in book world.

I love reading a good cozy mystery and when it's paired with good old fashioned southern charm and whit well I'm sold! "Hot Chocolate" by Dawn Greenland Ireland gave me that plus a plenty of offbeat characters, along with a fast moving plot with a murder mystery woven in, sprinkled together with a liberal amount of humor in to make this a book that I just couldn't read fast enough!
Madge, Lila Mae and Dorothea Alcott are the heirs to the Alcott Chocolate fortune. Dorothea has been taking care of their 92 year old father Bernie, but its really getting to her so she calls a meeting to discuss what to do. They come to the decision that it is time to place Bernie in an assisted living facility, but know that there is going to be problems when they try to dismiss Bernie's blond bombshell of a nurse Bambi Chaline. While Bambi doesn't have a problem with the severance package she has been offered her husband Jimmy Ray sure does and decides to sue. When things don't go Jimmy Ray's way and he winds up dead, well there are several suspects that kept me wondering who-dun-it!
As I read this story I couldn't help but think that it would make an awesome movie. Set in the south with more than a few quirky characters that had me laughing out loud on several occasions. As I read the story I found the characters getting stuck in my head and could just imagine their southern twang. Each of the Alcott sisters had very distinct personalities, Madge had been an only child for four years and was excited when Lila Mae was born, she became her protector and felt like she had helped mold Lila Mae into the confident woman that she became. Dorothea was born seven years after Lila Mae, as loves her role as the baby of the family. I think of the three sisters my favorite had to be Lila Mae, because of her unwavering belief in astrology even when her sisters poo pooed her. Bambi was a character that I was certain I was going to dislike but instead of disliking her I actually felt a bit sorry for her. Jimmy Ray's character was described as handsome until he smiled and then look out, teeth so bad that they would send small children running, oh so easy to imagine!
If you enjoy reading a fast paced mystery that has more twists than a winding country road, along with vivid descriptions of people, food and places that will grab your imagination and hold on tight until the final page your certainly going to enjoy "Hot Chocolate." I loved this author's storytelling ability and look forward to reading more of her work.
An e-book copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.

The middle-aged Alcott sisters, heiresses to the Alcott chocolate fortune--Madge, Lila Mae and Dorothea--are fit to be tied. In the midst of busy lives, they must deal with their ninety-two year old father, Bernie, who has become quite the handful.

His nurse Bambi, is another kind of handful, but when they decide they must move Bernie to an assisted living facility, the generous severance package they offer to Bambi is not enough to ward off a lawsuit brought by Bambi's husband, Jimmy Ray Chaline.

Luckily, the Alcotts, very wealthy and well-known in Houston society, have a great lawyer. Chances are good that the suit will be dismissed as frivolous.

"Hot Chocolate" is a captivating tale with vivid and fun characters. I could almost visualize myself socializing with them, and I definitely enjoyed their interactions with one another. They felt like real sisters, albeit high-society ones. Dorothea is typically the "baby" of the family, and definitely likes being the center of attention. Lila Mae relies on astrology and believes that proper Feng Shui arrangements in a room can make all the difference. Madge, as the oldest, has some unusual habits. Even the peripheral characters, like the staff at each of their homes, as well as Lila Mae's astrologer, felt like important pieces of the production. I also enjoyed close-ups of the relationship between Chance (a detective with the police force) and Lila Mae, not a typical pairing.

Jimmy Ray is another kind of person altogether. As the owner of a local bowling alley, he is something of a cheap-skate and seems to keep Bambi on a short leash. His good looks disappear when he opens his mouth, as he has very bad teeth.

All the players are in place, and we think we have them figured out. So when something unexpected happens one night at the bowling alley, the Alcotts, Bambi, and countless others are caught up in a mystery that had me turning pages rapidly. Who or what could be responsible for the shocking events? What will Bambi discover when she starts searching through her husband's dresser drawers and files? And what other surprises await the Alcotts?

Through all the excitement and intrigue, we are gifted with wonderfully descriptive moments in the lives of the characters, including the delicious food they enjoy. The dishes are presented so realistically that I could almost taste them. As a final pleasing treat, there are several wonderful recipes at the end of the book. A five star read.

The Story...

Madge, Dorothea and Lila Mae Alcott are middle-aged sisters who are heiresses to the Alcott Chocolate empire. When Dorothea can no longer care for their 92 year-old father, the sisters decide to fire his nurse, Bambi, and place him in an assisted living care facility where he can get all the care he needs.

Bambi Chaline is a blonde bombshell who worked for the Alcott’s for years and is more than happy when they give her a severance package along with excellent references. However, her husband, Jimmy Ray, isn’t quite so happy and hires a lawyer on behalf of his wife. Their lawyer files a lawsuit against the Alcotts for wrongful termination. Jimmy Ray smells a huge settlement, while Bambi is dismayed by the case.

Jimmy Ray is livid when the court throws the case out, but Bambi isn’t upset at all. As the Alcotts celebrate their success, Jimmy Ray doesn’t return home from his bowling alley. The Alcotts become the prime suspect in his disappearance.

My Review...

It was a nice change of pace to have characters in their 50’s. Sometimes I want to read about people closer to my own age then characters in their 20’s. I tend to be able to better identify with older characters. Plus, it made me feel as if I was reading a humorous Agatha Christie book.

I never read anything by Dawn Greenfield Ireland before, but she definitely knows how to write mysteries the way I like them. The story is filled with twists, turns and eccentric characters that are essential in writing a cozy mystery. It’s fast-paced and keeps the readers on their toes. There are also some giggles and a dash of romance thrown into the mix. At the end, she includes some yummy recipes that are featured in the book. Suddenly I’m in desperate need of a hot chocolate with some marshmallow fluff.

This book is delicious!

An excellent mystery that draws readers into the story!

Lovers of the classic mystery genre will like this book a lot. It has all the elements of a good mystery: An unexpected murder with many possible suspects, a group of interesting and engaging characters, a clever plot, and an interesting whodunit investigation. The method of the murder itself is quite unusual and helps maintain readers’ interest as they try to imagine why anyone would try to kill someone that way. Another interesting twist is the romance between detective Chance Walker and one of the Alcott sisters. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and the eccentric cast of characters that make up the Alcott clan. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Readers will like the bonus chocolate recipes at the end of the book!

Chocolate and Houston Money The rich really are different, aren’t they? And the Alcott sisters, Madge, Lila Mae and Dorothea, are a perfect example of ‘different.’ Heirs to the Alcott Chocolates fortune, the ladies are privileged and moneyed, yet don’t seem to be obnoxious about their wealth.

Lila Mae is a hoot. “Oh, no!” she said. “Not only is Mercury retrograde, but the Moon is void and it was just full in Scorpio and will no doubt clobber my sisters big time!” As your first introduction to Lila Mae, you just know that she is going to be a funny character. And she very much is. Astrology, Feng Shui, she is into it all, and has the money to make sure that her wishes are all granted. A “close friend” of Police Detective Chance, there is a cheerful and loving relationship there that brings warmth to the storyline.

Then there is Madge, the oldest of the sisters and quite a character in her own right. When we first meet her, she is trying on clothes, ostensibly for her granddaughter – as if! LOL…. As Lila Mae says when Madge poses in the fitting-room doorway: “Are you going for the ‘I’m sixty-six and have Alzheimer’s so I won’t remember this ensemble tomorrow’ look?” Enough said.

Now, Dorthea is the baby – and “baby” is the operative word here. Constantly working to be the center of attention, and the sister that I considered “spoiled out of her mind,” Dorthea is also the caretaker (if having 12 servants to hand truly qualifies as “caretaker”) to the ladies 92-year-old, grabby-handy father. When the ladies finally agree, with much hand-wringing and theatrical moaning on the part of Dorthea, to place their father in a high-dollar assisted living care facility, it is time for Bambi Chaline, his ‘hot-hotty’ blond bombshell of a nurse, to be let go. While Bambi is more than happy with her more-than-generous severance package and excellent references, her ner-do-well husband, Jimmy Ray, is thrilled to be able to hire a lawyer on behalf of his wife. Jimmy Ray smells a huge settlement against the Alcott Chocolate Empire for wrongful termination, though Bambi is quite dismayed by his actions. And when the court case is summarily thrown out of court, Jimmy Ray is first enraged – and then he is dead, a victim of Dorthea’s prized fork. Yep. Fork.

As the mystery continues to grow, there is an undercurrent of old-fashioned Southern fun and food interspersed amongst the pages, as the girls get down to finding out who killed Jimmy Ray.

I don’t want to give anything else away, but I will say that there are some funny moments in the book that kept me amused. As Elizabeth points out in her Amazon review, there are some issues that set me “that’s not right” meter fairly far off the scale. As a trained crime scene analyst, as is Elizabeth, it is rather hard to understand why the author didn’t do her research. The quirks of the ladies and their friends could have been a bit more fleshed out. Otherwise, for my particular tastes, I would call this a 3.5 star read.

I received this book from the author in return for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own and are not influenced by this fact.

A murder mystery normally has a certain "feel" to it. That is why I usually shy away from them.
As I began this one I was quickly drawn into the world of the Alcott sisters & their father, who reminded me of a 92 year old Jack Tripper (Three's Company), had the show gone on until Jack was 92 that is .
Chocolate drives these women, literally. From a Cocoa colored Bentley, to the hot chocolate drinking chillax sessions the sisters share, to their "paychecks"; their family business is Alcott Chocolate.
It comes time to put Pops in an nursing home (one of those extremely posh ones btw) & Pops is MORE than happy to go.
All seems fine until tragedy strikes. In the form of a murder.
This is where the story really takes off.
This story is incredibly engaging. This is the first time a murder mystery has made me chuckle so much and frantically turning the pages to learn more.
As I was trying to figure out "who dunnit" I was nearly distracted with the antics of the sisters and their supporting cast.
When you're convinced you know who it is, you're proven wrong.
I honestly do not know how Ireland did it, but she was able to make a multi faceted story flow so smoothly.
Every single character in this story added more layers to the mix, without making it a hot mess.
This story is set in the South & it certainly shows in the Sisters attitudes & ways.
Lila Mae, Madge, and Dorothea are the coolest, quirkiest, most diverse set of characters I have come across in quite awhile.
They are all so very different, but each one of them is so easy to fall in love with.
Despite the extreme wealth there is not a pretentious bone in anyone's body.
You feel like they are true down home Southern Gals who wouldn't bat an eyelash if they were brought to eat at a bar with saw dust on the floor.
The author also works astrology into the story & makes it work. You did not feel as if the story line were going off into left field or too kooky.
Parts of this story reminded me of the movie "Soul Food". Absolutely delicious meals were introduced into the story line in such a way you felt as if you were there. A bonus would of been a "scratch and sniff", especially of the hot cocoa & the delish sounding chicken dish!
A huge bonus is the recipes at the end! I am definitely checking those out myself this week.
Overall, we have a murder mystery that is so much more. There is honestly something for everyone no matter your genre preference.
So kickback, grab a cup of cocoa, & be prepared for a genuinely good time. With such a diverse cast of characters that keep you on your toes, and your funny bone tickled, who could ask for more?

There are times in life when only a serving of comfort food will cure what ever ails you. When these time strike, sisters Madge, Lila Mae and Dorothea, as heirs to the Alcott Chocolates Company, find themselves turning to steaming cups of hot chocolate topped with generous dollops of marshmallow fluff. The main reason for consuming such quantities of that dark nectar is the ongoing care of their 92 year old father, Bernie, or rather the termination of the employment of his voluptuous day nurse, Bambi.

Things heat up a further notch when Bambi's husband, Jimmy Ray determines that she was unfairly terminated and sues the sisters for an outrageous sum. Jimmy Ray is not a lovable person, though the sister's have to admit that he has done a great job revamping the local bowling alley.

Author Dawn Greenfield Ireland has created a very comfortable group of characters that I would immediately feel at home with, should I happen to be in Houston. Even though the sisters are extremely wealthy, they are not pretentious in any way. Lila Mae starts each day by making and eating breakfast with Amelia, her cook. Dorothea treats her staff, Maria and Joseph as though they are family. Ms. Ireland even managed to make me feel bad for the way Jimmy Ray is treated.

This book was fun to read and each time I thought I knew who did it, Dawn would add a new twist or reveal an unknown connection and I would be back to the beginning. Some of these twists include Lila Mae's boyfriend, Detective Chance Walker, Uncle Tito, who is some sort of Mexican shaman, and popping up at critical moments, is the astrologer Robert. These very diverse characters combine to make a memorable 'family' who I'd like to read more about.

After you finish the story, continue reading and enjoy several recipes for the delicious food that appeared in the novel.

What I want to know is how the sisters got the marshmallow fluff to melt in their hot chocolate? Mine just sat on the top in an un-appetizing blob. I'll stick with my marshmallows; don't you love the giant ones, though they are way too large for my mug.

Hot Chocolate is a creamy, rich, delicious and indulgent read that will warm you and nestle you in a blanket of satisfaction.

I am a huge lover of the cozy mystery genre and when I read the blurb for Hot Chocolate by Dawn Greenfield Ireland, I was instantly intrigued. A group of middle-aged sisters, each incredibly different, unique and ornery in their own way solving a mystery? Add the twists and intrigue of voodoo notions and practices; quirky, yet lovable, characters and you have a mixture and texture sure to be a huge hit!

Set in the South, Hot Chocolate has many of the fun and sassy hints of that region. The main characters of Lila Mae, Dorothea and Madge are created so real and impossible not to love. Their southern style and way of life shows through strongly, making for an even richer reading experience. The fact that the girls' 92-year-old father is a horny, yet hard-to-resist gentleman is a hoot as well.

The thing about Hot Chocolate is the fact that this is a story that is so easy to read and quick to get into. It is smooth and is written in a way that the reader feels as though they are right there with the characters and actually knows the characters - not only the main, but the secondary characters as well. I loved Bambi - the poor, pregnant widow; Chance, Lila Mae's love; Joseph and Amelia, employed by Lila Mae, but more like family; and of course Jimmy Ray, the victim (though I have to say the focus on this guy's teeth got a teensy bit tiresome, lol) and I cannot forget to mention Uncle Tito (what a hoot he is - not to mention unforgettable to boot!)

Not only is Hot Chocolate an enjoyable cozy mystery, it is packed full of surprises and yummy food talk. I must admit that I loved the hint on how to make a delicious Cafe Mocha!! YUM - I even tried it as soon as I read it, lol. I highly recommend this book by Ms. Ireland! Not only is it a positively delicious and sinful read, it also contains "have to try" recipes at the end!! I anxiously await more by this fabulous author!

Hot Chocolate is a great read for a cozy evening in. Grab the book, a cup of hot chocolate - or cafe mocha (recipe at the back of the book) and settle in for a fun time. There's going to be a murder, so you've got a mystery to solve, but there are a lot of laughs along the way.

The characters in this novel are larger than life, even down to Lila Mae's dog, Louis. Each one has a distinct personality and his/her own brand of quirkiness. This made getting to know everyone much fun, although there are so many it might be a tad confusing at first. I really liked the fact that the main characters were all older than today's typical protagonist, but they were just as energetic and hard-hitting as any teenager or twenty year old (after they have their cafe mochas)!

The story flows smoothly and has a lot of zany situations which make for a very entertaining read. This book may fit best in the cozy mystery genre, but I think anyone who enjoys good fiction will appreciate it.

This was the most fun I've had reading a book in a very long time. The characters were all a little peculiar, even the ones that played minor roles. This made for quite a lot of LOL moments!

I loved the three sisters from the start. It took a while for me to feel for Bambi, but the more I read about her the more I liked her. My favorite character though, would have to be Uncle Tito. What a character he is!!!

If you're ever in the mood for a light funny read that will keep you guessing who dunnit, this book is perfect. And no, I didn't figure it out. The killer was a complete shock!

The only downside to the book in my opinion is that it ended too abruptly. I was left wanting more from these lovable characters. Hopefully Ms. Ireland will give us more...

Oh, and there's lots of food and drink talk in this book, with some of the recipes in the back.

A great murder mystery that could safely also be described as fun filled romp. It's always great to see how the other half lives and this sexy comedy delivers a no holds barred examination of genteel heiresses to a chocolate fortune who get their lives turned upside down. The very fist book I bought on kindle which was good because I was able to read it top to bottom and it made trying out a new technology a good experience. You will be enthralled and making wrong guesses about guilty parties until the end. Enjoy this story, it's a good one.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

Well, I only listened to one of Ms Ireland's books before, "Prophecy of Thol", which I liked a lot. This one, however, I like a little bit less...

The book has a good premise: a rich family decides to put their 92-year-old father in an assisted living center, which also means letting his nurse go; the nurse's husband then takes them to court for wrongful termination, loses the case and soon after... is killed. One of the family members is a suspect and all are trying to solve the murder...

As I said, the premise sounds really good. What doesn't work so well for me, in the audio version at least, is the execution... There are a few things that I found slightly irritating:
1) the pace of the plot is definitely too slow; I think it took like two hours to get to the lawsuit and then another hour to get to the murder itself... (maybe it was less, but it felt like an hour...);
2) there are so many characters introduced one after another in such a quick sequence that for a while I lost track of who was who and what their relationships were; what's more, some of those characters do not really matter when it comes to the plot and appear only once or twice, and the one character that does matter is mentioned almost by accident and on the very last pages of the book - he almost seems to jump out of a magician's hat, for the sake of solving the murder...;
3) the book doesn't feel like a murder mystery at all; I had an impression of listening to a social drama, not a cozy mystery, with all those concerns and worries and talks about everything but the murder case at hand...

Having said all that, I still think the book deserves a chance... It is rich in social observations, it has quite a number of quirky characters that will make you laugh. The murder plot itself is rather logical, although I'd like more clues on the way as to who the culprit is:)
The "astrological" side of the story is also funny, with a wide range of believable, realistic reactions from everyone involved in the case:) So, even if it's not a nail-biting murder mystery, it certainly is a funny, intriguing social drama:) And although not the best cozy mystery ever writtten, it's a book that you probably won't regret listening to.

As for the interpretation by Ms Hazen, I generally liked it (as usual) although one or two voices really irritated me this time, sounding definitely too unnatural. And I had a poblem with understanding some of the lines belonging to Bambi's parents - I just couldn't make out what they were saying, but that may be due to the fact that I'm not a native speaker of English and their lines were very heavily accented.... Otherwise, it's a solid, professional interpretation, as usual with Ms Hazen.

DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

HOT CHOCOLATE - First, it is not the seeds of the jalapeno that is hot, it is the membrane (placenta) feeding the seeds. Recipes are included, they're OK, I guess.

This story had me rolling on the floor. Well written. Funny. Fabulous characters. Good story lines. The Alcott Family Adventures would make a great sitcom similar to The Whole Nine Yards with hot chocolate instead of weapons. No, they are not hired killers, just a lot of fun, and stuff happens. No drama queens, no stupid people, OK, there was one, just pure entertainment along with a good story.

I love the way Bambi was treated by the Alcotts. I love that Hstn was truthfully portrayed, that the author personally knew Hstn and didn't have it located in West Texas. Source: StoryOrigin. 5*

Katz' Cat - No magic, just a talented parrot and abandoned kitten working with their human. A fun cast of characters blended with well thought out story lines. This well written story is up the ladder from the typical Cozy mystery although I knew who the killer was with one clue and another clue verified my assumption. I would like to read the next book in the series. The uniqueness of this story kept my interest until the last page. The killer was caught red-handed, no squealing. 4*

Ok, so the book centers on three rich, quirky, well-seasoned sisters heirs to a famous chocolate company. Most of the book focuses on transitioning their 92-year-old father from home care by "Bambi" to an assisted senior living home and the resulting failed lawsuit against them by Bambi's boyfriend. Eventually, he's offed and one of the sisters and/or Bambi is implicated in his death. Finally, near the end, the mystery is solved and the real murderer is revealed. Oh, and by the way, the father turns out to be not so feeble in the end. Ok, so some have compared this book to one of Janet E.'s series, but I think that's a little wishful thinking. For a greater description of the book's faults, please read the other reviews on Amazon. I won't bother to repeat them since they're pretty detailed and complete. Having said this, I still enjoyed reading this book but will only give it three stars. Hopefully, the next books will be better cozy mysteries.

Omg this is such a good story. I had a little problem with some of the characters voices and wondered if I could make it through the book. Thankfully I got through because this one was almost too hard to put down. I think there were too many characters for the narrator to actually do them justice with their own voice. I did not like Bambi's voice. Sometimes the pitch made it hard to hear what she was saying. Stories like this is what makes listening even better. It has murder, mystery, a loveable Louie the dog an Asian housekeeper that I absolutely loved. The narrator nailed him perfectly. I could practically feel the energy rolling off of him. This was a perfect combination of murder mystery and comedy. I really look forward to the next book. Looks like the comedy will role over. Hot Chocolate
: Dawn Greenfield Ireland

This is a cozy mystery that goes a little deeper than most cozies. The Southern charm of the Alcott sisters oozes throughout the book. Their 92 year old father's antics made me laugh. All of the characters played off each other without overpowering each other. The murder was unique to say the least, and plenty of suspects to choose from. The author did a good job, as my favorite suspect was cleared.

I will move on to "Bitter Chocolatr" tomorrow.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. I enjoy Kelley Hazen's work, even if a couple characters were a bit irritating.

Charming, quick cozy that delves into the troubles of a loving wealthy Houston family after moving their 92-year-old father to a nursing home. I adored the three quirky middle-aged sisters, how they live near each other, help each other, and work together to solve family dilemmas. Loved their relationships with employees, generosity, and rituals regarding food. I want to know if Lila Mae and her beau ever get married, how the sisters are going to help more of the people that require it, and what's going to happen to their dad's caregiver. The murder, although it needs solving, is almost a side story compared to the relationships, meddling, and daily travails of the three very wealthy sisters.

This was my first cozy mystery novel. Will I be back for more? Not really. I liked my action-packed, fast-paced thrillers. I found I got a little bored because the story involved a lot about their lives and relationships, not what I am used to in a mystery book. With that being said I still liked the book, it was a good story and was solidly written.

With the genre not really being my cup of tea, I did find I was bored and skimmed read near the end. This was after I read 70% of the book though. Again nothing to do with the book, just not my genre. I liked how you were guessing from the beginning to the end who the ‘bad’ guy was. I had no clue.

The recipes at the end was a nice touch.

This is a well written cozey mystery with a drop of murder and is so entertaining. The array of characters are vibrant, colorful and quirky. They will draw you in from the very beginning leaving you wanting to get to know them better. Then you'll be enticed further through the intrigue and mystery of a pretty boys murder, who wanted him dead and why. I couldn't put it down once I started reading this fabulous cozey with its mixture of intrigue and comic relief. If I could have added extra stars to the rating I would have. Acquire " Hot Chocolate "book one in this new series today so you yourself can enjoy it as much as I have .Kat

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and it was great. Three middle age heiresses find themselves in the middle of a murder case after they fire the 92 year father's nurse. The characters are well written and unique with just the right amount of suspense and humour. The plot is fast paced, and keeps you listening. I thought I had it all figured fairly early in the book, I was wrong. There are a lot of characters in this book and the narrator does a wonderful job with all of them.

The story dives into the lives of the featured characters long before the murder takes place in order to establish the setting and give insight into each character as drama ensues regarding inheriting the Alcott Chocolate fortune. Post-murder, the investigation begins and there are plenty of motives. There are various character perspectives to show the overall narrative and this is a slow and descriptive read.

I really enjoyed this often funny cozy, and loved the zany, quirky characters! From the wealthy Alcott sisters of Alcott Chocolate fame, to their staff and friends, they were a delightful bunch to read about. There’s even a sweet dog who is recovering from hip surgery! Detective Chance is determined to figure out who murdered Jimmy Rae, and has to investigate a few people, some of them friends, while getting the details of the death, which was pretty bizarre. The ending was a surprise! I received a free copy of this book and write this review voluntarily.

Book #45 Read in 2018
Hot Chocolate by Dawn Greenfield Ireland

This is the first book in cozy mystery series, written by a local author....she is coming to our book club discussion of this book. This book was a good read--interesting characters, a good mystery with twists and turns and a cute doggy named Louie. I would continue this series.

A cozy mystery. The first few pages had me concerned that this would be an over-the-top cozy with eccentric characters that were invented only to fill the pages. Instead, this ended up being a satisfying mystery with likeable well-defined characters.

Delightful story with fun banter among the characters, especially the three sisters. I loved the vivid character descriptions that really made the story come alive.

"Walter Branson’s half-looped niece who had a mysterious relationship with Jimmy Ray? Or was it Dorothea Divine – the weapon came from her house where Bambi worked for three years. The Alcott clan is in turmoil and no amount of chocolate will soothe their nerves until they solve the mystery and Dorothea is off the hook."
This is a good mystery.
