The uncut rise and fall of the group behind the best selling 12inch single...Rumors!
In the summer of 1986, "Rumors/Vicious Rumors" by Timex Social Club, dominated radio airwaves. Their song also topped Billboard magazine's urban charts, garnishing the number one position respectively for Hot Black Singles, Hot Dance Club Play and 12-inch sales.
"How Do Rumors Get Started" is a powerful, edgy and amusing look behind the scenes of the rap music industry in the mid-80's.
I absolutely love this book. The story of Timex Social Club will resonate with any reader looking for a candid, succinct look at rap music, its artists, and the rap industry during a time when rap beats started really climbing the music charts.
Can't argue one bit about the straightforward storytelling. I loved it, and really appreciated the breakdown of the often depreciated technical inventiveness behind scratching records, and creating beats and sounds. The creativity referenced gave me much to respect about the music. The confidence exuded by the group, hitting those 'sold-out' tours, laying down that star dust and giving fans what they paid to see, coupled with the illustrated documentation, and photos, puts this fascinating and convincing memoir over-the-top. Most of all however, were the pranks and fun and humor that truly holds this story together, making for one compelling argument.
The Arts of all measures hold a very dear and valuable piece to life. And yes, there were the low sides. But then pitfalls and tribulations are indicative of all walks of life. Regardless of which path (career choice) is taken, "dues will be paid." There are no short-cuts, exactly what makes Timex's story so enamoring. The good times recounted far outweighed the bad. The pranks, the $800 airport (tax), the hurt wee-wee, MC Hammer...oh man...I can go on and on laying out the remarkable job done recalling mostly good times...a clear throwback of a hip-hop rap generation extolling the fun in living! Great Job.
