For some, home is simply a place to eat, sleep, and store possessions. For others, home offers intimate and rewarding opportunities for self-expression, becoming a reflection of taste, values, and even identity. The activities of constructing and maintaining a home can provide a sense of existential purpose, of belonging to a particular place along with others who have cared for that place before. Illustrated with more than 100 color photographs, A Home of Her Own showcases a wide variety of homes and tells the stories of their making.
This is such an inspiring pictoral and narrative work. Nancy and her photographer took pictures of women from all walks of life who own their own homes--some by choice from the beginning, but others through divorce and widowhood. She offers a beautiful description of each woman's journey to her home. This was the book that inspired me to buy an 1864 Victorian after my divorce and the book I turn to again when I feel that I am crazy for taking on such a massive project that I adore.
I really enjoyed these inspiring stories of women who wanted “a home of their own” even if they did not have big incomes or savings. Each story features a unique type of home which these women created often through substantial renovation work. I enjoyed this book so much because she pointed out that everyone’s “dream home” may be vastly different than her neighbor’s or friends’. We often express our individuality through the homes we create.
This book is beautiful and inspiring. Eighteen women and homes they have restored/decorated are presented with wonderful photos of their homes. Each essay is a short story of their lives, and these are strong, interesting women. The "her"is in the title because all of the women have been single for at least part of their lives, either because of divorce or death. I read every word and studied every picture. Both the writing and the photography are outstanding.
This book is delightfully inspiring. Featuring interesting and beautifully photographed accounts of women who have made homes that not only shelter them, but reflect their strong personalities, it is a great read. Highly recommended!
