The book is a bit dated- Stevick has further developed his ideas regarding the mathematics involved in book making in the early medieval period. However, it is a good basis from which to understand later work that includes metalwork and high crosses. I would also recommend his book Insular Art For: Their Essence and Construction, which describes the practical applications of insular design.
