Amaranthine #3

Ties of Blood

Rate this book
With Kateesha dead, it’s time to face the consequences – in both worlds.
When Katelina accepted her new life of night and vampires, she left behind a worried mother and an abandoned apartment. Instead of wrapping things up, a trip home starts a chain reaction. They meet Verchiel, a strange vampire who seems too eager to befriend them, then the police arrest Jorick for kidnapping. Even worse, The Guild may want to question them concerning Kateesha’s death.
Despite Jorick’s best efforts, he and Katelina go from being prisoners of one world to prisoners of another. Against her will, Katelina is taken to The Guild to face Malick, and Jorick must follow. Does Malick want to punish them, or is he after something else? And why does Verchiel keep popping up? Even more terrifying, are they really being followed by a malicious vampire, or is it just Katelina’s imagination?
In Ties of Blood, events are set into motion whose consequences will echo across the future. The third installment of the Amaranthine series plunges back into the world of night and fear; a world where vampires live in the dark for a reason.

Joleene Naylor is the author of the glitter-less Amaranthine vampire series, a world where vampires aren't for children. As a compliment to the novel series, she has also written several short stories, including the Vampire Morsels collection.

In her spare time, Joleene is a freelance book cover designer and for-fun photographer . She maintains several blogs full of odd ramblings, and occasionally updates her website at JoleeneNaylor.com. In what little time is left she watches anime and pins recipes and DIY, all from a crooked Victorian house in Villisca, Iowa. Between her husband and her pets, she is never lonely, and should she ever disappear one might look for her on a beach in Tahiti, sipping a tropical drink and wearing a disguise.

She currently has several books available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple and Smashwords.

I just finished 'Ties of Blood', the third book in the Amaranthine series. I absolutely loved it! I have gotten well acquainted with her characters by now, and they are fascinating. this book delves even more into Jorick's past, answering even more questions. Katelina is changing and evolving. She has begun to accept vampires more although she has learned to fear them. The fighting scenes were really well done. Jorick becomes even more protective of his human, and it is sweet to read how he cares for her.
I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Joleene Naylor is one of the best new authors I've read. I know I will read these books again.

I adore this series, I'm actually re-reading it and man had I forgotten a lot! I wish that these books were more widely read because they are really good! Katelina is believable and relatable in a way most leading women in vampire novels aren't, at least to me. Ties of Blood really brings home what she's given up and how it is affecting her. It also introduces my favorite character, Verchiel! However, it is also where I began to dislike Jorick and his broodiness and selfishness. Throughout the first two books, he continually claims he doesn't want to be a part of Oren's schemes and wars but he kept trotting along anyway, now he has to pay the price but Katelina is the one who takes the true brunt of his actions.

Good idea in theory but falls flat in actuality

I kept buying the next book in this series just to see if Kat either smartens up to leave this jerk, or grows a pair enough to make him start treating her better, but, sadly it hasn't yet happened and now I just don't care.

Ah, yes... book 3 in the Amaranthine Series.

Does it feel like we have been here before? Ties of Blood marks the sixth book I have reviewed by Joleene Naylor-if you include Strange Portals-which features two of her short stories and was edited by her. Joleene, what can I say? You just keep me coming back for more :-)
So, I was wondering how I was going to tackle this review, given that it is number 3 in the series. I think that it is pretty much impossible not to at least give out spoilers from the first two novels. For those of you reading this that have not read Shades of Gray, or Legacy of Ghosts, I highly recommend taking a look at my reviews of those two books.

Okay, now that you are up to speed, book 3 picks up where Legacy of Ghosts leaves off. Katelina and Jorick have survived the ordeal with Kateesha's coven and now have to face the repercussions of Katelina's actions. They are summoned to the Citadel to face Malick. There are some tense moments here when our heroes are unsure what their futures hold-or if they have futures...
For me, Ties of Blood keeps the thrill ride rolling. I always feel for Katelina as she gets more and more enmeshed in this undead world. Book 3 also sees the delightful addition of Verchiel, a red-headed asian vampire with clown eyebrows? Yes, he is very interesting and gives some comic relief to the brooding performance of Oren and the often angry and abrupt Jorick. What new vampire characters will Katelina encounter in book 4?
Guess we will find out when I get around to reading Ashes of Deceit.

Oh! And be sure to cast the parts of the characters in the Amaranthine Series over on Book Caster.

Returning from the nightmare of battle against Kateesha, Katelina begins to think more and more about the life she led before Jorick. After deciding that a trip to visit her grief stricken mother was probably for the best, she begins to realize how much her life has changed in just a few short months. They have a run-in with a bright haired, overenthusiastic vampire, Jorrick gets arrested for Katelina's kidnapping, it seems like things couldn't get worse... right? Of course they could! The Guild wants Katelina and her raven haired vampire for questioning regarding Kateesha's death. Katelina is taken against her will to the Citadel, to come face to face with Jorick's master, Malick. Fear of what her punishment might be and a newer threat popping up in the mean time, it seems like Jorick and Katelina can't catch a break

I am so glad I found this series. These books have me hooked and wanting to do little else but be sucked into their world. The heartache and triumph of these characters is really enjoyable. Of course, as you can probably tell by now, I am OBSESSED with this series. Something that I have really appreciated is the symbolism of taking a shower. When something awful happens, the characters go take a shower to wash away the horrors of what has recently taken place. Even Katelina remarked about showers being able to get the outside clean while, of course, leaving the inside marred and dirty. I liked that Joleene took the time to really describe the Citadel in this book. I could picture the glass elevator and the atrium, the scar covered waitress and the lounge for humans. It was quiet awesome.

Once again, Joleene, job VERY well done.

Wow! True to form Joleene Naylor wows us again with her amazing talent in this amazing third novel in the Amaranthine series. I couldn't put it down! around every corner something new and sinister lurked and on more then one occasion I thought they were all doomed.

This book starts off were the last left off with Jorick and Katelina finally home after the long battle with Kateesha. Katelina feels that maybe its time to call home as she is still technically reported kidnapped after all and it wouldn't hurt to get her stuff so she could wear some of her own clothes for a change. The trip home is nothing but a disaster! it starts a chain reaction of disaster that follows them. First Jorick is arrested for Kidnapping, then they are taken by Executioners! apparently Malick wants to question them about Kateesha's death. Will he kill her for killing his beloved fledgling? and not only that but because of it some psychotic phantom vampire is now on their tail and wants to kill her too!

Is this her life now? death, chaos, and despair! probably but Katelina knows that it is worth it to be with Jorick. He is the one bright spot in her gloomy world and she will do anything to stand by his side.

Joleene is a true inspiration to writers out there everywhere her books and art are truly phenomenal and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! make sure you stop by her website her see her art of the characters from her books, Verchiel is a favorite of mine, as I am sure you all have your favorites as well. I am off to read the next book as I just can't get enough!...lol

Jorick and Katelina have overcome so much--Claudius, Kateesha, an inquiry by their own people. In a normal world, they would have earned a much-needed rest, but in the dangerous world they live in, peace is impossible. When Katelina tries to reconcile her past with her future, she finds herself faced with her greatest challenge yet. Ties of Blood takes us into the heart of vampire hierarchy when Jorick, Katelina, and Oren are summoned to face Malick. It seems terror lurks around every corner as a new, frightening stalker is bent on destroying Katelina.

This is my favorite book so far. In contrast to the dark nature in Legacy of Ghosts, there are lots of humorous moments in this book. With the introduction of Verchiel, Ties of Blood reaches new levels of awesome. Verchiel is a smart-ass Executioner who takes orders from The Guild, but puts his own, bad-ass twist on everything he does. By far, he's one of my favorite characters in the series. Is Jorick a little jealous of the attention Verchiel pays Katelina? It seems so. Jorick is enraged every time he sees the redhead Executioner. But Jorick's rage doesn't compare with the anger we see in Oren. The blond fledgling is hellbent on waging war with The Guild even if it costs him his life.

I could not put this book down. At the end, I was completely absorbed and couldn't be separated from my Kindle until I finished. This series just keeps getting better and better. If you haven't delved into the world of Amaranthine, what are you waiting for?

Joleene Naylor is both an author and a graphic artist and I came across her when looking for someone to design the covers for my own novels. She does a great job. We became friendly and I read a "beta" version of this novel before it was published.

Now, vampire novels are not what I usually read, and anyone who looks at my own books, or at the reviews I write on goodreads will see that it's not something I can claim to know at all well. I had assumed before reading Ties of Blood that vampire lit is a genre for teens, fearfully anticipating adulthood with a bit of vicarious bloodlust, harmless and all the more trivial for that.

Ties of Blood is different. It's adult. There is sex in it - real, erotic sex that is way past what would at least normally be considered acceptable in adolescent literature. There is violence too and it's not smoothed over; it's brutal.

But that's not all. Its themes are adult, the values that underlie it adult too. I've read the next one, also in "beta" - it has yet to appear - and will read the rest of the series. It's made me respect not just the author but the genre in ways I hadn't since reading Dracula by Bram Stoker as (yes) a teenager and even to think that it might be more than fun to write one myself.

On my scale of values, my own books get three stars; it takes a Dostoevsky or Shakespeare or at least a Celine to get to five. So three is pretty good going - a recommendation.

I enjoyed this third installment of the Amaranthine Series. The entire series has been done from Katelina’s POV and she’s just as clueless as the rest of us and I love everything about her voice. How she sees event, how she reacts to everything around her, what she does when she’s escorted against her will to the “Vampire King.” Her voice is a refreshing change, and though there are times that I wonder what Jorick is thinking when he gives her one of his smiles or mocks the young human, I’m glad I don’t hear it. It makes him all the more mysterious and fun.

Although Katelina is the only human among the vampires who now surround her, she doesn’t want to be one of them. She’s not simpering for them to bite her, or be upgraded to a vampire. She likes being her human and Jorick seems more than happy to leave her as close to human as he can without losing her.

I laugh every time she injects herself into the conversation with a question or a comments and the other vampires looks down at her as a talking cow in their midst or as Micah calls her “Lunch.” Or when she’s being held against her will and she just can’t stop herself from asking questions.

The only thing I didn't like about completing Ties of Blood is that, after reading the three released books as well as 101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire in a matter of dasy I now have to wait for book for in the Amaranthine series.
Each book has a great balance of great charachters who you learn ot like, love or hate through Katelina's eyes. Brutal action, moments of sheer terror, erotic personal encounters and hilarious moments where Katelina pokes her nose where the vampires don't want her or tries to make a home with her vampire boyfriend.
The only thing I can ask for in book four is that Naylor shares the newest installment of her talent with us sooner rather than later. Oh, and more Verchiel. I know Jorick hates the guy but I can't get enough of him!

I think this one's my favorite out of the series so far. The story continues where "Legacy of Ghosts" left of and moves on quickly. The introduction of a new vampire, red haired Verchiel, who is a wind walker and shows up whenever things seem hopeless for Katelina, adds spice to the third sequel of Amaranthine.

Another great installment in Katelina's & Jorick's story. When Katline gets dragged to the Guild Stronghold we finally meet Malick who's creepier than imagined although not the scariest vampire of them all. Happily, Jorick and Katelina survive the adventure and it's on to book 4.

This series just keeps getting better with every book! The author has such a great imagination. She keeps you guessing all throughout the book and her vampires are different than all the other run of the mill vampires you usually read about. Love this story line!
