Charlotte, has lived most of her life protecting herself and her father, now he has been taken by King Kenneth's soldiers, and now she is desperate to find her father at any cost. So she decides to dress like a boy, so its easier to go about the countryside in search of her beloved father. Then she runs into Bryce MacAlpin, who only see's her as "Charles". Bryce, can't believe that he is willing to help this urchin, when he needs to focus on his special quest to restore the true King to power, however there is something about Charles he can't put his finger on, but knows he needs to help him find his father. But when he finds out that Charles is not a boy at all but a beautiful woman...he can't resist the desire he feels for her, and he will have to choose between the duty to his family and country, or the love he feels for Charlotte. A Warrior's Promise is the third in the Warrior King Series, and the first I have been able to read in the series so far, and I am totally hooked. Its been a while since I have read from this author, but I have enjoyed her stories, and this was is one of my favorites of her works. I really enjoyed the characters, including the side characters (Bryce's Family), very entertaining and full of life, they almost seemed real. The story kinda started out slow, but once I got into the story it really picked up speed, and I found myself not able to put it down. Bryce, is the kind of hero, the just makes you want to gobble him up and keep him chained in your bedchamber LOL. He is utterly irresistable, protective, and a tender and caring lover, but very dedicated to family and honor, who could resist such a man?? Charlotte, is not your usual heroine, she has had to fight to survive, she is brave and yet she does have a softer side as well, and I couldn't help but love her to pieces, she had qualities that were very endearing. The plot was exciting and definitely had some unexpected surprises, that fully satisfied me. Overall A Warrior's Promise, was a exciting and fun read, with moments of suspense and passion and I can hardly wait to read the rest of the series. A Romance You Have To Read!!!!

This one was much better than the others so far! HOWEVER, the personality of the heroine was annoying by the end. This book also had a cliffhanger unlike the other 2 books.

This book was a fast read with a normal font size and not the micro-print some authors end up switching to when they have decided they are great writers & fluff out their books & needing them to average out to approximately 350 pages.

The annoying parts were the run-on of Charlotte wanting to find her da', who was taken prisoner by King Kenneth. The false king of Scotland. She was determined to do so so much with or without Bryce, that it was annoying.

Last but not least, the cover. GOOD GOD! I wish editors would read the books they make covers for. The woman is supposed to be 18 & only up to his chest. Also, the entire book, her hair is hacked off to look like a 'lad' & she's dressed in poor man's clothes. Where is this dress from? I think this dude is having an affair with a cover model! Oh well!

Charlotte isn't your average Scottish lass. She can handle herself in a fight; she is a crack-shot with a bow and arrow; and she speaks her mind without hesitation. All of these are skills which come in handy after her father is kidnapped by agents of the king. On her own, Charlotte must impersonate a young man as she tries to track down her beloved da --and it's in that disguise that she first meets Bryce.

The strapping highland warrior comes to the aid of a skinny young boy who is accused of stealing food, then takes the lad under his wing. Bryce is on a mission to rescue a spy for the True King of Scotland who was taken prisoner by the current king. Once he hears the boy's (Charlotte's) story about a father in need of aid, he decides he'll partner up with him (her), to make both rescues.

It takes awhile before Bryce catches on that Charles is really Charlotte. But once he does, the easy affection he had toward the boy quickly morphs into something more for the woman. He admires her strength and tenacity, and realizes that he has found a true partner when he was least looking for one.

Even though it's clear that they suit, neither Charlotte nor Bryce believe they can be together long term. They remind themselves, and each other, of this... over and over and over. And over. They feel like their missions --or at least Bryce's-- must take precedence over love or marriage. Though I don't know why. It felt like it was a manufactured obstacle, because really, there is no reason why these two shouldn't be together.

Bryce has his alpha male moments, but I was happy to see that for the most part, he respected Charlotte for who she was. And I enjoyed their adventures together. The love scenes were not very explicit, but they didn't leave me wanting. The story moved along well and even set up the next (and final) story for Bryce's brother Trey and his woman.

But much like my complaint with the last book, the series arc about the One True King was pretty weak. Either Bryce or one of his brothers is the King in hiding. And obviously his identity will be revealed in the last book. But even when talking to each other in private, they speak of the king in third person. Who would do that? It doesn't ring true. Eh... I did enjoy the main story though. 3 1/2 stars.

This has a very popular theme - hero and heroine on foot traveling through Scotland on some mission, soldiers chasing them, fall in love, blah blah blah. However Ms. Fletcher has a way with words and instantly draws you into the adventure and the danger chasing Bryce and Charlotte. Of course, Bryce is one of the four brothers who are working for the True King of Scotland so he is on a very important mission. While Charlotte is merely (haha) a young girl searching for the father that was taken away by the false king's soldiers. Charlotte isn't your average Scottish lass. She fights for what she wants (usually physically and can hold her own), she's amazing with a bow and arrow; and doesn't hold back her thoughts which I found very refreshing (so did Bryce). She isn't a coy miss who hides behind giggles and hopes the man can figure out what she is (or isn't saying). Nope not Charlotte, she's very direct and speaks her mind regardless of consequences.

Ms Fletcher has a way of putting the reader inside the character's heads so they actually feel a part of the journey. Her characters are also real people with faults and dreams that the reader can easily relate to. Her heroes and heroines are always "great" people who care about others and are unselfish in their actions. It all makes for a fine story and an exciting journey that the reader enjoys as much as the characters.

I think this is my favorite book in the series so far (just one more to go). I loved that the heroine was a Warrior in her own right and the hero had to learn to trust in her skills. My main problem with this entire series is how drawn out and repetitive everything is. Really, these books could be 100 pages shorter. But they’re a fun read.

Spectacular novel, it's better than the first two in my opinion. I loved the spunk of the heroine quite a bit!

Worth a read. Worth an evening indeed.

So, I didn’t read any of the prior books in this series before reading this one, so maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have. The book certainly wasn’t bad, but the story also felt a little boring. Most of it was just the couple walking and talking and even the main point of their mission felt as if it was brushed over at the end and wrapped up quickly. I will say I’m a little disappointed since this book seemed to have higher reviews, but I’ll just give the benefit of the doubt that it’s because I didn’t read the previous books.

"What do you want with me? How long am I beholden to you? Where will you be taking me? Will we be going far from here--"
"Stop!" Bryce snapped. "You're a bit of a thing that not only needs feeding but help in growing into manhood."
"And what?" Charles halted in his tracks. "You expect to make a man out of me?"
Bryce peered down at him. "That's exactly what I intend to do."
He kept walking, and Charles had no choice but to follow, with only one thought in mind.
There was no way this mighty Highlander would ever accomplish making a man out of Charles, and for a very good reason.
Charles was actually Charlotte, a woman!

Charlotte had fallen on desperate times. Her father had been taken by King Kenneth's men, and she was left alone. Terrible things can happen to a woman on her own and desperate times called for desperate measures, and so Charlotte took on the persona of Charles, a down on his luck street urchin. She was determined to rescue her father, but she couldn't do it on her own. She wasn't faring so well when she crossed paths with Bryce, and she had almost gotten herself caught in a life of servitude due to a situation created out of a desire to eat. For coming to her aid Charlotte is indebted to Bryce. Now she only needs to convince him to help her rescue her father.

Bryce is on a quest for the 'true' King of Scotland. He is one of four men raised as brothers, one of whom is the 'true' King. Each has his own mission and Bryce's is to gather information from a spy in King Kenneth's court. When he comes across a boy who seeks his help in avoiding capture, he sees something of himself in the him and decides to help him. While the two travel, the boy reveals his wish to rescue his father. They strike a deal to help each other with their individual missions. He never suspected the plucky young lad was concealing a secret nor that their fates would be so closely intertwined.
______________________

I love books where the female lead disguises herself as a boy. They usually make for some of the funniest stories, and this one does not disappoint. Charlotte's father raised her with the skills to defend herself because they traveled a lot. She can fight and shoot a bow and arrow with the best of them. When Charlotte's father was taken by the King's men, he held on to the hope his daughter would find a way to rescue him.

Charlotte is smart, loyal, fearless in battle and, because of her unusual upbringing, has more freedom than most of the woman of her day. Her father treated her as an equal and he taught her much. Bryce was set in his mission and had decided a relationship with a woman would be out of the question until the 'true' King was on the throne. By not revealing she was a woman, Charlotte learned a lot about Bryce and managed to wedge her way into his affection before he learned the truth--that she was, in fact, a woman. When the secret is revealed he has to come to terms with new feelings such as protectiveness and attraction. For Bryce is an old fashioned guy, and he was raised to believe woman weren't meant to fight that they were the weaker sex. Charlotte was like no woman he'd ever met. While he initially believes you should, "let no woman have your heart until you're ready to give it." He soon discovers love can't be planned, it just happens.

Overall, this one gets a 4 out of 5 roses. It was a fun and lighthearted story that had a wonderful blend of romance, humor and drama mixed in. This was the first book of the series I've read, but I hope to read the first two books soon. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earns a FAN rating--the temperature in the room seems to have suddenly gone up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice.

2.5 stars.
I'm soo disappointed because for some reason, I just absolutely disliked Charlotte. Sooo sooo much!!
And although I Haven't read book 4, so this is not a spoiler, I just have a feeling that Bryce is the true king! And having Charlotte as his wife.. Erm no.

And it's soo strange considering that I loved the last two books, and both the male and female main characters.

I’m going to tell you right up front that I almost didn’t read this book because the ARC I had was missing chunks of the story and it was frustrating to try to piece it together. I’m so glad I gave it another shot, though, because it was so good I didn’t want it to end. Once I got past the first couple of missing sentences or paragraphs, I was able to glean enough from what I’d read to piece the rest of it together.

The cover blurb tells it all, but without the spirit and fire and emotion that’s woven throughout. Charlotte is determined to rescue her father with or without help. It’s just dumb luck that she ends up at Bryce’s feet…with a clear view of what’s under his kilt.

Thinking she’s a boy, he rescues her from getting arrested and now she’s his property. Laboring under the assumption that she is a he, Bryce is determined to make a decent man out of her. Charlotte/Charles is more than up for the task and can outdraw most men with her bow. Together, they make a formidable team, teaching each other valuable life lessons.

When she’s finally outed as a girl, Bryce is shocked then goes into macho protective mode, which is ridiculous considering she’s saved his hide more than once. She refuses to be intimidated into dropping her father’s rescue attempt, and eventually leaves Bryce behind. But like any hardheaded man in love, Bryce follows her.

A touching, funny ruse that morphs into a love story, A Warrior’s Promise will satisfy the historical and the contemporary romance reader. Plenty of action keeps the story moving at a brisk pace, and the solid bond of trust that develops between Charlotte/Charles and Bryce is the basis for the love that transpires later. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

This was hands down my favorite in the series so far. Charlotte was amazing, strong, funny, intelligent and willful, not to mention she could kick some major butt, she was a fantastic character and by far my favorite female from all the Highlander books I have ever read. Bryce was just delicious and not overly dominant. He learned early on he could not control his wife and instead of growling at her need for independence and freedom, he respected it. I'm still dying to know what Mara's secret is even though I have a feeling I already do . It was also a lot of fun to see all the other characters from the past books.

This series started off a little slow for me. I liked the first book but wasn't over thrilled with it and since the sex wasn't that hot I thought maybe there would be more history or True King drama. I liked Mercy and Duncan but wasn't captivated by them. The second book is by far my least favorite since I couldn't stand Tara, but there was a lot of True King hints and clues as to his identity. The third book had fantastic characters and plenty of adventure with an interesting twist at the end but little in the way of clues about the identity of the king. However, it did an excellent job of building the suspense for the final book and since I have already downloaded it I cannot wait to start it.

Definitely a good series, even though it didn't start off a hit with me, it has grown into a very interesting story.

Bryce, who was steadfast about not falling in love until his mission to support the true king was done, fell fast and hard. Charlotte is a feisty little thing, disguised as a lad she is searching for her father who has been taken away by soldiers. The picture on the cover is not Charlotte. She is straight forward and honest and has no idea of feminine wiles let alone use of them. She wins Bryce's love with her honesty and faithfulness. She is stubborn in a way that is not reckless. That's not to say she thinks things through, it's just that some characters are stubborn for egotistical reasons. Charlotte is tenacious.

Odin, the dog who adopts her along the way, adds his own brand of loyalty and joy to the story and made even this devoted cat lover think about adopting a dog! I loved the scene where she defends Odin from Reeve (the understood strongest of the four brothers) and takes him down. First he thinks he's been felled by a lad only to find he's been felled by a lass. I loved him in the previous book and love him even more now.

Updates on the previous two brothers includes Mercy and Duncan and the birth of their first with a nice surprise. The saga, meanwhile, continues and so I'm off to read the final episode.

July 2019: Charlotte is not just bragging about her ability to take care of herself. She's got good instinct. I'm annoyed with the repetitiveness of the inner dialog.

So far, this has been the best of the series for me. I just couldn't put it down and read it very quickly, even compared to 'Bound to a Warrior'.

What can I say? It is fast paced, exciting and the romance is sweet but not cloying, and yeah, maybe it is mild in the sex department compared to 'Loved by a Warrior', but it doesn't take from it in any way.

I was always very intrigued about Bryce, him sounding always like the wisest among his brothers and he didn't disappoint. He's a great hero, very brave, courageous, honorable and protective like his brothers, but with a different understanding of things, with a special intelligence and sharpness to him.

And Charlotte... Wow! She's fantastic. I loved her determination. She's so tenacious, smart, brave, courageous, loyal, bold and, at the same time, loving, kind and sweet. Until this read, Mercy was my favourite out of the heroines, but now Charlotte takes the throne. I loved her and definitely hope she gets time in the next book as it is the last one. I think she's too interesting and valuable not to get it, plus, she said she would stand next to Bryce through anything he might need, and also, the book ended way too abruptly. I definitely would like to read more about her, her da and their relationship with the MacAlpins.

Oh, and what about Odin... haha, he's fantastic. I also look forward to meeting him in the final installment. :D

A Warrior's Promise was more than just a Promise, it was a gift. I love history, and when you throw in a good looking, kind-hearted (even if it's hard for him to admit it) Highlander and a tough-as-nails heroine, it makes it that much better. I am actually on my to doing some searching to see just how true to life this book is. If there is one thing I can't stand about any historical it is when it in't factual. I do understand from time to time dates of importance have to be jiggled around a bit to fit a story, and as long as the author admits to doing this, I'm ok with it also. But please don't just throw in something historical just because it may be something you are interested in, drives me nuts.

A Warrior's Promise makes me wish I'd read the other 2 previous books in the series, although, I got enough from this book to pretty well get the gist of what occured in the previous books, but I WILL be buying the final book in the series, without a doubt!

Exciting and well written book about a family of Scottish warriors, this one concentrates on Bryce. One of the 4 is the true king and as a group they support each other. Charlotte(charles) is dressed as a boy with her own agenda. One of a series this one can be read as a stand alone. Good read and recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. It has everything I want in a book... Honesty, brave, love, loyalty, passion. I usually don't like books where the heroine is disguised as a lad but I didn't mind in this one. I think it fit her character so perfectly. I highly recommend and plan on reading the other books in this series.
