This book taught me some things about Navajo rug design and weaving. Some of the language is dated (the original copyright is 1975, and the most recent update on my copy was 1996). That makes it 25 years old. True, the art form itself is timeless, but design styles have probably changed at least somewhat, and the lists of names of influential active weavers are clearly outdated. Some terms could have been defined more clearly for the absolute beginner (which I am). Nevertheless, I think the book is worth reading as an introduction to this art form.
We just returned from a quick trip to Phoenix and visited the wonderful Heard Museum. I was so taken with incredible Native American craftsman that I bought this book from the museum shop. The book is a concise look at the history, culture, design and current trade of Navajo Rugs. I am totally hooked!
