For those who love wine and comics, this is your book. Davodeau spent a year with a winemaker - and not just any winemaker, one who is purely organic and sulphur-free. The vigneron learns about comics and the comic book writer learns about wine-making. A wonderful book!

This was a complete surprise - I picked it up at the library, thought it sounded OK for someone who loves both wine and BD - and I loved it! Wise and witty words about the world of publishing and illustration, and the world of vineyards, a vivacious exchange of ideas (sometimes confrontational), two adorable strong-headed main characters and simple drawings that give you room to breathe and enjoy.

Kitabın sonunda yer alan he

Like the premisse of the book suggests, this can be appreciated both by wine lovers and BD lovers, and a nice chance to initiate oneself in one of the two pleasures.

Recommends it for: wine lovers
This is a fascinating nonfiction memoir-type of book. The author is a "comic" artist as they are called in France and he proposes his new idea to his friend who is a vintner. Etienne will work in the vineyard and learn all about wines and the industry, while Etienne will introduce his friend to "comics" and the whole industry including fan conventions. The artwork is beautiful. Davodeau is a realist and the drawings are true-to-life with the change of seasons being shown in his friend, Richard L ...more

There are obvious parallels between making graphic novels (writing, drawing, printing and distributing to readers) and making wine (raising, fermenting, bottling and distributing to drinkers): Each is a job that can be easily misunderstood. Each is a form of art which many people fail to recognize as art. Each is practiced by an assortment of masters, mediocrities and eccentrics not even their peers can understand. Each has its own arcane practices and occult jargon, incomprehensible to the unit ...more

I wouldn't think of two so disparate vocations to have many things in common. For instance, the writer/ artist visiting the publisher and selecting the type of pages for his graphic novel to be printed on is juxtaposed with the vintner visiting the cooper to select the barrels his wine will ferment in.
It's a beautiful friendship on display. The winemaker invites the artist to visit cellars, other wine makers, and of course to taste wines! The artist works in the vineyard, brings the wine maker

This is the first work I’ve read of Davodeau, although I’ve been wanting to read his Lulu Anew. This nonfiction work has a curious premise: both Davodeau and his friend, a vintner, learn about each other’s job. (They don’t really exchange jobs, as the subtitle suggests.) There’s more on the art of making wine than there is about creating comics, but then again, it’s the artist Davodeau who is leaning about wine, so it makes sense that these experiences are going to get more representation. Son yıllarda okuduğum en kendine has çizgi romanlardan. Yayıncıları ...more

If someone said to me "what would be your perfect graphic novel theme?" I don't know what I would say because my imagination doesn't seem to work that way these days. But if that same person said to me "did you know there is a graphic novel out there in which a vintner and a graphic novelist team up to learn about each others worlds, oh and it's set in France?" I would tear down walls to find it!

I came across this title quite serendipitously while shifting graphic novels at work and recognized t

'The Initiates' shot Etienne Davodeau to the top of my list of favorite authors, and I will definitely be checking out more of his books. His writing is intimate, relatable and manages to hold your attention even through personal anecdotes. I also love his drawing style, particularly his mix of ink sketching and what looks like watercolor. Davodeau somehow evokes so much through his simple palette of black/white/grey, and he's inspired me to do more experimentation with simplicity. I'm so happy ...more

Excellent book! The subtitle could more accurately read, "... learn about each other's jobs," since they don't literally swap. This is my first exposure to Davodeau's work. He's got a deceptively simple style. There's also a page by cartoonist Lewis Trondheim, which, being as I love Trondheim's work, impressed me greatly. Thanks to semi-regular wine tastings at a friend's house (Hi, Mike!) I was familiar with some of the terminology used. Overall, this is a fine book whether one is a comics fan, ...more

I read the English version of this book, titled The Initiates. I really enjoyed this book. Learned so much more about the world of wine making, not to mention getting more ideas of graphic novels to read! Only one tiny thing marred the whole story. There seems to be either a page or a few frames missing from the story. Toward the end, he is visiting a winemaker in the Jura and he says he was filled with shame, but there doesn't seem to be anything that would have caused it.

I know only a little more about comics than I do wine, but even so, the passion of these creators is what shines through. I overall liked the art, but sometimes some of the dudes' faces got a little samey/confusing. Mostly I'm left with a pile of other things to read now.

Nice enough and very interesting to read how wine is made, but for me the why of the book was not really clear.

Therefore this book is mainly recommended for people curious to know how the wine making business works.
