In this arresting debut, love poems and interior monologues are reinvented in a time of war. Within them, Laura Cronk writes, “I want to blow up the Law with Language, having run my tongue around my mouth ten thousand times. Instead of not speaking, I want to speak.”

As with all the books of poetry I read, this one was decent. It has to be otherwise, I wouldn't read it.

Here's how I pick out a book of poetry. I go to the library. I open it up and flip through. If nothing jumps out at me, I put it back.

Perhaps it's because death resonates with us all, perhaps it's because death resonates with me that the last poem in her book was my favorite.

"Having Been Unprepared" is brilliant.

I'm not sure about all the copyright laws and what not, but you can read the poem

Two sections: Selected from the Wheel of Night and Having Been an Accomplice. Each section is dominated by a long poem that shares the section's name: the former is 14 pages and the latter checks in at 16 pages.

My favorite pieces here are "You Come for Fear" and "Having Been Unprepared".

Cronk knows how to articulate being a woman right now in a way that feels from "autrefois"/the lyrical past. Even the blurbs talk the persona/character Citizen Queen as if it's a fabrication, but that is not the feeling these poems give. How great to see the actual and the historical/lyrical/political mesh together in such a lovely yearning way.

Emma Komlos-Hrobsky (Editorial Assistant, Tin House Magazine): I love, love, love this collection. I feel the same awe for the voice behind these poems that I had for my older cousins growing up–how could someone be so cool, know so much, and still want to talk to me? Cronk’s writing is smart but unguarded, ready to let you in and crack open both your and the speaker’s inner lives.

I love that Laura's strong, narrative voice, brought me into a feminine landscape shrouded in the political (One I wasn't sure I'd enjoy). It's a great book of movement, of love poems and of agency. (my review from the Rumpus is coming soon...)

3 1/2 stars. Pretty good poetry. I was not amazed nor will I read it again but I liked it.

Cronk's poems delve into the shaky ground of deep emotion--love, awe, uncertainty. But the control over those experiences are silently direct and masterful. A strong collection of poetry.
