I should be on my way to dreamland, but I am so irrationally pissed off, I need to share my pissiness with the world. I don't even know where to start; I just want to flail my arms about and sputter incoherently. Summer Devon is a pen name for Kate Rothwell and I know Rothwell from some historical novel. I bought the historical novel, started it, and never finished it, so it languishes in my TBR pile. I don't remember the title off the top of my head; yellow mass market is all I got. Rothwell sa ...more

Unnatural Calamities by Summer Devon is a delightful romp about Christopher "Toph" Dunham, a headstrong venture capitalist and Janey Carmody, a wannabe caterer living in West Farmbrook, Connecticut. Toph and Janey are both trying to raise teenage girls in the picturesque little town.

Unnatural Calamities is a high-energy love story that involves kidnapping, prison breaks, hot sex in bathtubs, and laundry two days past its prime. Devon keeps the pace of the story moving from the opening scenes. Ja

Janey and Toph are both quirky. Since the age of fifteen Janey has been on her own and unable to count on anyone to help her. Toph is the rich kid with a heart, he collects friends adding them to his "family" even his ex-wife and the man she cheated on Toph with. Janey is totally opposite of every woman Toph has ever wanted but she rocked his world from the first kiss. She makes him lose control and become a wild man in the sheets.

Summer/Kate writes characters that are occasionally more than a bit over-the-top, and Janey and Toph are no exception. This is a fun romp that suffers slightly from pacing issues and characterization. Summer's sense of humor is sharp and clever and wacky all at the same time, and just when you think it might all be too much, things become poignant and elegant and emotional.

this is the book that has every romance trope on the planet. Seriously. Go look and you'll find at least a passing mention of the ones you'll find in a contemporary romance--except no, there's nothing about paranormal romances, so take werewolves etc out of the equation.

you will find:
amnesia, mistaken identity, bad boy, squillionaire, handcuffs...and many more.

Unnatural Calamities started out as a page turner and lost steam. I enjoyed the characters however they lost their personalities towards the end. This book is a great read for a rainy weekend.
