English summary: The king is dead, long live the king. This statement, which suggested above all political stability, could no longer be used by contemporaries of the 20th Century. The Herold formula, last used in in 1824, sought to defuse the dramatic death of the ruler through the fact that the crown, and thus the power, was seamlessly moved from the late monarch to the new one determined to be the successor. This seamlessness could barely hold true during the 20th Century. The age of extremes was marked by various political disruptions and upheavals. The death of the powerful, in particular the dictators of this century, mostly brings about a political power rift without rival: The dictator is dead, what now? - So goes the modern variant of the French formula. German text. German description: Der Konig ist tot, es lebe der Konig - auf diese Aussage, die vor allem politische Stabilitat suggerierte, konnten die Zeitgenossen des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht mehr setzen. Die 1824 zum letzten Mal verwendete Heroldsformel suchte die Dramatik des Herrschertodes dadurch zu entscharfen, dass sie die Krone und damit die Macht nahtlos vom verstorbenen Monarchen auf seinen durch die Erbfolge bestimmten Nachfolger ubergehen liess. Davon konnte im 20. Jahrhundert kaum noch die Rede sein. Das Zeitalter der Extreme war von vielfaltigen politischen Bruchen und Umwalzungen gezeichnet. Der Tod des Machtigen bedeutete insbesondere in den Diktaturen dieses Jahrhunderts meist einen machtpolitischen Einschnitt ohnegleichen: Der Diktator ist tot, was jetzt? - so die moderne Abwandlung der franzosischen Formel.
