ALEXANDER C. MARTIN, Ph.D., is an authority on plants used by wildlife, and on the identification of plants by seeds and fruits. He is the author of three Golden Guides, Flowers, Trees and Weeds, and for thirty years was research Biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service in the Department of Interior.
Born in Turkey of missionary parents, Dr. Martin was interested in native plants there as a child and the interest has been sustained throughout his life. At one time he worked with Luther Burbank, and hybridizing is still one of his major interests. Dr. Martin has authored several books in the field of natural history, including a manual on seed identification.

This book is an invaluable reference for anyone leading natural history hikes. Whether you are leading for your naturalist club, your conservation authority or your provincial park - you often want to liven up your outing by telling participants which birds/mammals/herptiles etc. eat a particular plant that is on your route. Conversely, you might be fairly sure that you will see a certain bird or other animal on your hike. With book, you will have something interesting to say about plants that this bird consumes or uses in some fashion. When I lost track of my copy, I had to do a major search through used bookstores etc. to find a replacement copy.

One of those very few volumes that is truly a must-have for nature hike leaders.
