Neo recently discovered read-along audiobooks... and chose to return to this piece.
After we finished an Easter mystery with these two characters, Neo rushed to find more when we were out at the library. Minnie and Moo are on the case of a missing jelly donut. Their slow and deliberate analysis of the clues prove interesting and highly entertaining, especially for a five year-old. Neo has a few more of these books on the move to our local branch, so keep your eyes open for more reviews.
Minnie and Moo are two of the greatest cows in all of children's literature. I feel quite confident in making that statement, mostly because I think they're hilarious, and also because I can't really think of any other comedic cows in kids' books....
And silly me, I was fooled the whole time about what happened to that jelly donut.
*Bonus: Elvis the (drunk??) Rooster makes an appearance!
Once again, this series has the right touch of humor to keep my son interested as I read. Though Minnie and Moo aren't the brightest cows in the pasture, they sure do manage to embark on several interesting adventures. The most comedic part of this book comes when the duo decide to dress up as chickens, in order to find out who stole Minnie's jelly donut. At the end of it, it turns out the donut wasn't stolen, just simply stuck to Minnie's rear. Nonetheless, their little investigation did help save Elvis from being kidnapped by a fox and over all this is an entertaining children's book.
Minnie is missing her jelly donut, so Minnie and Moo go on a hunt to find the thief. They dress as chickens and wait in the coop for the thief that they think is a blue chicken. When they realize the clue they had was a fake to get them away from the food, they go back, only to find that Minnie had sat on it and it was stuck to her bottom!
This was a strange book, content-wise. There were a couple of confusing things: Minnie and Moo are too similar of names, so I often got them confused as I was reading, and they tried to introduce the mystery term ‘red herring’ but called it ‘red fish,’ which is not correct! This level 3 book did have a lot more words on each page, more pages in general, and a little bit more of a plot, but the execution was just a little off. Also, there were chapter numbers, but no table of contents, which isn’t helpful for a child, starting to be able to read alone, to understand how a book is structured.
This is such a funny book! It seems like the older kids get, the funnier the books get too. Minnie and Moo are cows that live on a farm and seem to love donuts. While eating their jelly donuts out of the box one day, Minnie's donut suddenly disappears. Neither Minnie nor Moo know where it's gone. Thus begins their search. Minnie and Moo is a chapter book, which is unusual. It also introduces some reading concepts which is unusual as well. What a great book! I loved it! Very colorful and animated.
I don't know where this book came from, but I found it on my book shelf last week. It's one of the "I CAN READ!" series, and it's hilarious no matter one's age. I am an octogenarian and I couldn't wait to share it with my friend who is older than I. While not quite so side-splitting as THE WONKY DONKEY, I wouldn't hesitate to share it with kindergarten children as a read aloud. Yet the plot is complex enough to engage confident early readers
3.5 stars, rounded down because I, personally, didn't appreciate some of the potty humor. I still find it amazing that a pair of silly costumes can transform these gals into just about anything. Also, I have to assume parents are sharing this with their emergent readers, so the opportunity to teach about "red fish" (red herrings) isn't lost.
I was looking for a book for my little cousins and this one caught my eye because my grandmother's name is Minnie and she lived on a farm, but unfortunately I was not a fan of this book. First of all, even though this is marked a Level 3 "for confident readers" in the I Can Read! System, there are quite a few tricky words used. And there's a joke about a "red herring" being referred to by one of the characters as a "red fish" that I don't think kids would get, although a parent reading along might...but shouldn't kids be reading Level 3 books by themselves? (Or maybe aloud to parents or siblings?) I hated the illustrations because the two cows were hard to tell apart and the color palette was really dull. Quite a disappointment.
This is a really humorous easy reader, and part of a series. I would definitely recommend this series to a student in grades 1 and 2. I thought Minnie and Moo, the two cows these books are about, were just so comical. The back and forth banter is just so cute as they try to solve the case of the missing jelly donut. They are sure the blue chicken from the book of Farm Crimes is the thief when they find a blue feather near the scene of the crime. They decide to dress up as chickens and sneak into the henhouse to find him or her. They meet up with a rooster returning from a birthday party, Elvis, and a fox looking for a chicken dinner. In the end it turns out the jelly donut was stuck to Minnie's behind!

Minnie and Moo The Case of the Missing Jelly Donut By Denys Cazet 2005 Harper Collins Publishers IBN: 9780060730086 Genre: Easy Reader, mystery Level: K-2
Minnie's jelly donut turns up missing! Moo believes that, "evil knows no bounds!" and the two set out in the barnyard to find the culprit. After finding a clue, Minne and Moo devise a plan which involves a disguise, because who knows what may happen, "when the thrill of stealing jelly donuts is gone? What's next? Candy from babies?" This book will keep you giggling and you will be surprised by the twist at the end!
Little kids will love this story of cows searching for a missing doughnut. It's full of kid humor: animals dressed in silly costumes, a sassy rooster, misunderstandings, outsmarting other animals, etc, and lots of stereotypical detective talk for kids to ask about and learn with their parents. I could hear my nieces and nephews laughing in my head as I read it. I didn't think the watercolor artwork was particularly notable, but it isn't bad. Just nothing terribly special about it.
I have silly girls aged 6 & 9. They like silly stories. They LOVED this story. We were all cracking up! The older one pick this book out a while back, read it and never said a word about it. My 6 year old picked it up this weekend and started reading it. She read it to me and we laughed and laughed. Then the 9 year old said she had been waiting so long for us to read it so she could laugh with us.
This book is so cute! It is a great book for kids to be able to read independently! It has colorful illustrations that make the book more interesting! The short chapters would make it easy to get through, which is good for a child's confidence! The mystery part of it adds some action to the story.

Minnie and Moo chapter books are a favorite of my adult special needs son and I. They never cease to bring a giggle or laughter out of us with their antics. This one they think chickens have robbed them of their jelly donut so they dress up like chickens to try and catch the thief. But funny business follows
This book was fun to read. The mystery is great for children because it keeps them engaged. This book was not difficult to read, so it would be great for children moving up to advanced transitional books.
