So this is an anthology of 40 short stories, and however much of a completionist I might be, I'm not going to review them all individually.
It had been a long time since I read any short stories. I read this as a bit of a break between books, the great thing about short stories being that a volume like this can be easily put down and picked up again later... I read it cover to cover in short order.
Obviously any collection of diverse work is going to include things that don't appeal to everyone. I'll go further and say that there were a small handful of respectfully brief turkeys in there, but overall this was a great read. Though the medium of the short story has its own particular hallmarks, I'll stick my neck out and say I'd have welcomed most of the stuff in here having been longer.
My interest is refreshed. I want to read more short stories now.
A substantial collection of 40 stories, originally published to celebrate 40 years of The British Fantasy Society. The stories cover a very wide range of the fantastic ranging from High Fantasy through to some deeply disturbing horror. The stories maintained a surprisingly consistent quality for such a large collection.
