Andy was killed during the apocalypse, except Andy can't die as she's a Reaper. Her role is and always has been to send the souls of the dead on their way to their afterlife.

Coming upon a small settlement, Andy is intrigued by it's leader. Not often a man gets more than a cursory look but the feelings mutual as Mason is equally intrigued.

It's never been in the cards for Andy to settle down in one place or with one man but that doesn't mean she lives her life celibate. One night should be all it takes to scratch an itch before moving on.

This is a book that really would work as a weekly TV series. A different take on the 'Walking Dead' franchise, this pulls in multiple different paranormal beings though the next book in the series features a totally different cast of characters and scenario. I can just cross my fingers that the author might. in the future, reunite the entire series and characters.

At 103 pages, there really wasn't enough opportunity to include depth of any sort in the world building & characters. I did appreciate that the author chose a 'fade to black' option for the adult content scenes as otherwise it would have taken away from the central story line & plot which was already suffering because of that fact - superficial. I did enjoy that the main characters are both alpha and that Andy is a strong female type drifter character where usually it's the male.

The secondary characters supported the main characters and served as a foil for the world building but each and every one was what I call a 'disposable character' meaning I had no vested interest in whether they survived to the end of the story or not. Which is good because like 'Walking Dead' there are casualties.

This is a book that can and will be appreciated by fans of post apocalyptic dystopian world romance. The factor in making the decision to grab this book or not is (in my opinion) connected to any potential reader's feeling regarding purchase price, page count, and whether adult content scenes is a deal breaker. ...more

Loved it

I loveva creative story, and this one definitely is. Andy is fascinating-a Grim Reaper more interesting than many of the others i have read. No, i take that back. She may just be The best. And the hero and townspeople are well drawn. Overall, it was great.

First I was caught by name and then by cover. (Mind you GR cover wasn't the one who caught my attention, but Amazon). The blurb sold it. I always loved h, who has special powers and is unique in the para world. Andy didn't disappointed. Though I have to say I love when h accepts and enjoys who she is. I saw this novella when it still brand-new and had a reduced price on the Samhain Publishing website. I read the description, got excited when I saw that it was a post-apocalyptic story starring a woman who'd been turned into a Reaper, read the excerpt, and decided I had to buy it. Unfortunately, although there were aspects of it that I liked, this novella didn't quite work for me.

The world is an interesting one, wide open for whatever sequels Ms. Carter might want to write. This is one of those I saw this novella when it still brand-new and had a reduced price on the Samhain Publishing website. I read the description, got excited when I saw that it was a post-apocalyptic story starring a woman who'd been turned into a Reaper, read the excerpt, and decided I had to buy it. Unfortunately, although there were aspects of it that I liked, this novella didn't quite work for me.

The world is an interesting one, wide open for whatever sequels Ms. Carter might want to write. This is one of those "everything and the kitchen sink" worlds that includes every imaginable supernatural being, which I know really turns some readers off, but I thought Carter handled things fairly well. Several beings were mentioned in passing, but the only ones that made extended appearances were Andy (the Reaper), a small group of ghouls (they were only around for a few pages, though), and some werewolves.

I thought the werewolves and ghouls were so so (information about them was limited to "here's how they'll try to kill you, and here's how they can be killed"), but Andy's Reaper abilities were as interesting as I had hoped they would be. I also loved all the details about the ways Sanctuary's residents protected themselves. Those people were very prepared and very deadly.

Unfortunately, one big failing of this novella was that so much was left unexplained, and several world-details were a bit confusing. The Reaper stuff, for instance, didn't always make sense. Andy indicated that she couldn't reap souls until the beings with the souls were dead or about to die. I couldn't understand why this was even a minor problem, since, as far as I could tell, Andy could decide to try to kill someone, thereby making them about to die, and thereby making their souls reap-able.

I had assumed that Andy's kick-butt fighting abilities were simply paranormal instincts, something she gained along with her Reaper abilities. However, on page 62 (according to my Nook) Andy mentions "a healthy dose of martial arts training" - when did she get this training, and who gave it to her? What was her life like, prior to gaining her Reaper abilities? The more I thought about it, the more I realized I barely knew anything about Andy, or about Mason. I at least finished the story knowing a few small details about Mason's life prior to the bombs being dropped, but Andy's life might as well have begun when she became a Reaper.

Not only did I feel like I barely knew the main characters, character behavior was also sometimes inconsistent. Tough, disciplined Mason knew that Andy wasn't quite human and that there was therefore a chance she could be dangerous to both him and Sanctuary...and yet he had sex with her, and even fell asleep with her afterward, before finding out what she was. I thought that seemed very out of character and difficult to believe. Also, Andy and Mason's romance moved extremely fast - I think they knew each other a grand total of maybe two days before they decided they were in love. The "we're the same" factor was probably supposed to make this easier to swallow, but it didn't quite work for me.

My suspension of disbelief was still badly stretched by the time the novella's ending came around, and so I was less forgiving of the ending than I might otherwise have been. I'm not a huge fan of stories that end with pregnancy or babies, although I'll put up with those kinds of endings in most romance subgenres. Reaper's pregnancy ending didn't work for me at all. All I could think was, "Okay, so does Andy still have her instinctual need to reap souls, and how's she supposed to do that while 6 months pregnant?" And, after almost 80 pages of Andy being kick-butt, this line was almost painful to read:

"Six months pregnant, Andy was starting to waddle but she still insisted on pulling her weight." (p. 77)

She's gone from being the scariest, deadliest person around to almost waddling.

I really did like the setup, and all that action was nice after reading lots of more sedate works, but the limited number of pages didn't give Carter a lot of room to clarify things. Plus, writing-wise, a few more commas here and there probably would have helped, and there were way too many "Jul-" names. Thankfully, Julian (some guy who died early in the novella - see page 25), Julie/Julia (probably the same person, a resident of Sanctuary), and Julietta (an ex-girlfriend of Mason's) were all minor characters, or the problem would have been much worse.

Reaper made me one very happy paranormal fan-girl. Author Mina Carter has created a solid dystopian/paranormal romance with a wicked sense of humor and a refreshingly simple couple. Human boy meets not-so-human girl, sparks ignite, and one may have to kill the other to survive if they both aren’t killed by other monsters first. See… simple.

This is a sweet little read, it is short, only takes a few hours. I enjoyed it. I like both Andy and Mason. When I go into such a short piece- I have to manage my own expectations. I'm going to make a guess and say it's harder to write a shorter story and craft it well. You will not be getting any extreme character development (naturally, duh, it's short), and sometimes there are questions unanswered. "Reaper" is a very good story!
Reading stories about ghouls is not really my thing, but Ms Carter has written a fascinating 'take' on what happens following a devastating war. I am intrigued, although the violence is a bit more graphic than I like.

Reap What It Coming to You

Not sure how to classify this book but it was interesting. Normally not my favorite genre to read but this book was not bad. Kinda hate that the book was not longer for a more in depth look at Mason's past but overall the story kept me entertain for a lunch hour.

Andy was an interesting character and things will happen in the book that will make you question what you know of biology.

I enjoyed this story! It was a fun read for me. I haven't been the biggest fan of post apocalyptic books but I really enjoyed this one. There was plenty of action in this story and it had a few twists. I enjoyed the pacing and flow of the story. The characters were good. The sex is glossed over for the most part. I am not a fan of apocalyptic type books but this one grabbed me, dragged me in and would not let go.
Mason was one hell of a hero and Andy, well she is something else entirely.
Whilst I understood the panic when the children were taken, the townsfolk were idiots doing what they did to Mason. He is the only one who could/would have sorted things out and protected them.

Reaper by Mina Carter is Book 1 of the End of Days Series. This is the perfect book for those moments when you just don’t have enough time to commit to your regular full length read. This was such an exciting book. I loved the darker and grittier feel of this world.

Ms. Carter builds world that I want to live in. I hope this is the beginning of a series because I loved this book. Reapers are fast becoming some of my favourite paranormal creature.

Reaper Apocalypse

Wow! I know this is an older book by Mina but loved it. Andy is a post-apocalyptic Reaper and Mason was the town leader and a hottie. Still would like a hint as to what made him special. This ended well for a Mina book in that there was an epilogue with a bit of HEA!

Wicked post apocalyptic story. I was glued to the storyline, trying to figure out who was good, bad or indifferent. It spun a quick and fast paced tale. I appreciated that Ms. Carter took an honest approach to how people are when their backs are against the wall. Definitely ready for more of this world.

Interesting. This story is a little different take on how paranormals came to be. Andy is kicka** and Mason is a "whiskey" smooth talker. They are perfect together. Great read.

Grabs you from the get go.
