I personally didn't like this book as much as I have the ones before it. The plot was fine and I think that it had a lot of potential, but the story just went so slowly, and dragged on way too long. I still enjoyed reading out loud to my sisters though, and hope the next one's better.😄
Wow, this book was great! This book is perfect for ages 8-12.
Note to readers: To get the best experience when reading this book, this series should be read in order. Also, there are some intense scenes in this book, so if you are a sensitive reader, skip this book.
Series: Red Rock Mysteries #8 (must be read in order)
Age recommendation: 9-13
Summary: Bryce and Ashley are going on vacation: first on a houseboat, then to the Grand Canyon. While on their trip, they run into a famous tennis player and his expensive gold necklace is stolen. Can Bryce and Ashley solve the case?
My thoughts: To be honest, I was not expecting to enjoy this book so much. However, I really enjoyed reading about their houseboat vacation; I loved that Bryce got to go fishing with Sam like he used to do with his dad, and that he and Ashley were able to help the little girl. I think Griffin is a little stuck up because he’s a celebrity, but overall, a nice guy. I love the idea of a family time capsule that you just keep adding to year after year, generation after generation. You wouldn’t necessarily have to bury it like Sam does, but just keeping a box of photos and messages and memories to pass down to your kids and grandkids seems like a really fun idea. 😊 I think a lot of the stuff that happened to Bryce and Ashley in the Grand Canyon is a little bit ridiculous, but it made the story more interesting and I’m glad they all made it out alright. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it.
Canyon Echoes Genre: Mystery/Fiction Author: Jerry B. Jenkins, Chris Fabry By: Riley 1/23/15 The Timberline family finally get away from home for vacation! Little do they know two celebrities will be there, along with news reporters, and possibly someone jealous of what they don't have. They start out their vacation at lake Powell, on a houseboat. Quickly, they already make friends on the beach. One couple, Sheila Lester and Ricky Burns, soon to be married, seemed to be nice people. Unfortunately, right before they were married, Ricky got cancer and lost all of his hair. He is constantly sick, so they decided to hold off on the wedding for a while and take a vacation. Bryce and Ashley Timberline find out which houseboat the celebrities are staying in. Both want a peek at it, so they get on a raft and paddle closely around too it. All of a sudden, Ashley looks over to the dock by them and sees a child about to fall in. Splash! Bryce jumps into the water and saves the childs life. It turns out, that kid just happened to be the McElroy’s child; the very famous celebrities here on lake powell. The Timberline’s get invited to dinner as a thank you on their gigantic houseboat full of expensive furniture and dishes. Later in the evening, Griffin McElroy notices his latest piece of jewelry was missing. A very expensive piece of jewelry. Someone in a diving suit had stolen it and jumped into the lake to a different boat. The next morning, Ricky isn’t feeling well, and Sheila thinks that they should leave. Bryce and Ashley go behind their hotel room at the beach and see a wetsuit draped over a bench. Bryce and Ashley ask Sheila and Ricky a few questions and they notice Ricky was getting nervous. Quickly, Bryce runs and grabs his phone to call the police. Ricky was taken in for questioning, and Sheila told Bryce and Ashley how astonished she was that Ricky had used her for a crime. “And to think I was going to marry him” she said tearing up about to cry. Soon after that the Timberline’s pack up and start the second part of their trip. Hiking the Grand Canyon. The Timberline’s finally reach their destination and are ready for adventure. They packed their backpacks and start their hike with their tents, food, and plenty of water. Dylan, the youngest of the Timberline family rides on Sam’s back. Sam is the dad in the story. They finally reach the first campsite and set up camp exhausted, hungry, and dehydrated from the long hiking. Bryce fills up the water jugs and bottles while Sam starts a fire. Bryce, Sam, and Dylan sleep in one tent, while Ashley and Mom sleep in the other. Unexpectedly, Bryce wakes up in the middle of the night with something bashing into his shoulder. He sits up, rubs his eyes, and realizes it is Dylan crying, saying: “look at that scary guy trying to get into our tent!”. Bryce looks over, and turns a flashlight on scaring the hooded person away. The Timberline’s break camp early before it got too hot. They started out quickly, and down the trail they saw Sheila coming up the trail! Bryce and Ashley immediately notice something strange. Sheila has only one water bottle, and a cheap half empty souvenir backpack from Lake Powell. “How could she be hiking with so little?” Mom and Sam start talking to her and invite her to stay with them tonight, for she had no camping gear. She and Dylan go for a walk while Bryce snoops in her backpack. He finds a dark hoodie. Were they being followed? Was Sheila mad at us for imprisoning her fiance? What does she want from us? Dylan. She has Dylan! Bryce and Ashley rush outside the tent towards where Sheila and Dylan went. They heard a loud scream. It was dylan. Bryce peeked around a boulder. What they thought was a scream turned out to be a giggles. There, Sheila and Dylan sit sided by side looking at the fox footprint molds in the hugs rocks. Everyone went back to camp too wash up for supper. Then, soon after that they went to bed. Bryce was the first one up, waking up at five-thirty. He knew Sam wanted to leave camp at six ‘o'clock to continue hiking towards the next campsite. So Bryce exited the tent to use the restroom only to find their camp wrecked with food and water both gone, supplies they could absolutely not go without. Bryce awoke everyone. Everyone got up quickly, except for Sheila. She was gone. Sam went to look for her and didn't return. Bryce and Ashley had gone too get water, so Mom and Bryce waited for them to return. Sam had hit his head on a rock and got knocked out. Sheila found him and took his water bottle. Then, she came up too Mom dehydrated and in need of water. She held up a gun demanding water but none was left. Bryce and Ashley made their way back up with the water. They saw Sheila and Sheila saw them. She pointed the gun at them demanding water. Bryce chucked at her a two liter water jug knocking her to the ground and too weak to get back up. They searched her backpack and found Dylan’s teddy bear. they opened it up and found the stolen jewelry inside. Sam drowsily made his way back to his family and phoned the police. After all of these events, the Timberline’s were ready to go home. That was one exciting vacation. In my opinion, all of Jerry B. Jenkins books are great. This book is number 8 of his 18 book series called Red Rock Mysteries. This book kept me on the edge of my seat every time I read it. It got me caught up in this book so much i could even imagine I was experiencing it with the characters in the book. It is full of suspense, mystery, and action. If you ever read a mystery book series, read the Red Rock Mysteries.
A vacation aboard a houseboat puts the Timberlines up close and personal with a celebrity couple. Bryce and Ashley see real-life paparazzi in action while they work to solve a mysterious break-in on the celebrities’ boat. But are they up for the challenges of a brutal Grand Canyon hike?
It felt like a vacation. It's super cold, so I needed something to warm me up. This did it. I enjoyed the characters, as I have in each book in this series. Exciting adventure. Great fishing.
my favourite part was when the twins managed to stop Sheila from getting away from the necklace, and making sure that she had enough water to stay alive too.
I'm particularly fond of this series because I would read them aloud with my sister. I think I connected to the books because the siblings in it shared a bond like the one I shared with my sister. Their relationship was so real! We would spend half as much time laughing as we did reading! We would stay up late at night to finish these books. That was when Mom worked night shift, so we didn't have to worry about waking anyone with our laugher. I wish I could live those times over again!!
This book kept you guessing until close to the end. Bryce and Ashley thought they had figured out who the culprit was halfway through the book, but they did not realize until much later they he had help.
