Prior to writing romance, award-winning, USA Today Bestseller Melinda Curtis was a junior manager for a Fortune 500 company, which meant when she flew on the private jet she was relegated to the jump seat—otherwise known as the potty. After grabbing her pen (and a parachute) she made the jump to full-time writer. Between writing sweet romance and sweet romantic comedy, Melinda finds time to bond with her husband over home remodeling projects. She recently came to grips with the fact that she’s an empty nester and a grandma, concepts easier to grasp than jet-setting on a potty.

Lexie and Jackson were High School sweethearts who married young. Even though Lexie was pregnant, they loved each other. Jackson became a firefighter (elite forest fire team). Lexie is the responsible one throughout the marriage while Jackson is a charming, easygoing, hotshot firefighter hero. Always willing to spend time with his buddies and/or helping out a friend, he leaves all the responsibility of their life together to Lexie; away fighting fires much of time, missing family events, not calling when late, etc.
Lexie begins to feel neglected and distances herself from Jackson. Jackson is assigned to fight fires in Russia. During a visit home, Lexie has Jackson sign divorce papers; and Lexie becomes pregnant again.
Jackson loves Lexie and his daughter (Heidi). He is likeable, charming and irresponsible. He is true to Lexie and wants her back; he just doesn't know what to do or why she divorced him.
This book is about Lexie and Jackson working through a number of issues and challenges that life throws their way and finding their way back to each other. I'm not sure that Jackson truly understands "being there" for his wife by the end and Lexie seems to be the one who enables him.
There are no graphic sex scenes in this one and a lot of fire fighting action/suspense. There are a lot of issues both characters have to deal with and the book needs to be longer to appropriately resolve them. I would have preferred a little stronger showing by Jackson at the end. 3 stars.
This book has two tropes that are like catnip to me: second chance, and secret baby. I would normally stay away from a book with such an uncreative title...but second chance romance AND secret baby...I can hardly stay away from one, but both together? Nearly impossible!
Jackson and Lexie married young and found themselves divorced after ten years. When Jackson returns home after being in Russia to train firefighters for six months, he’s determined to win back his wife. He’s shocked, but then thrilled, to discover Lexie is seven months pregnant.
Lexie is determined to keep Jackson from working his way back into her life. She’s tired of broken promises and feeling like his job, and everything else, comes first and she doesn’t want to feel let down again. Jackson is persistent. But then he isn’t.
This book started out well. Really well. Lexie still loves her husband and desperately wants to be with him, but knows she deserves better. Jackson knows he messed up and just wants to make things right with his wife. When he finds out how much she’s been struggling since he left, and how difficult the pregnancy has been, he’s determined to do what he can to help. It was sweet to see how much Jackson wanted to make things right and how much Lexie wanted to be with her husband but was afraid to let him in. However, they have serious issues to work through. Namely, poor communication skills - on both their parts. Everything was all heartfelt and compelling.
Until things took a left turn towards melodramatic around 60%. And it was all from the hero, and went downhill from there. He wants his family, but he’s no good for them. He loves Lexie and his new son, but it’s better if he’s not in their lives. I was kinda afraid Lexie was going to have to deal with whiplash in addition to postpartum issues.
Here’s the thing. I’m not a fan of the “grand epiphany” as a result of a tragic situation. This couple had issues from their childhood they needed to deal with, they had issues from their marriage to deal with, Jackson’s job as a hot shot firefighter causes a lot of strain - both for him mentally and on their marriage, and they were currently going through a difficult situation with the birth of their son. NONE of these things are going to go away just because you suddenly realize you don’t want to live without the other person. I want to see people do the hard work - like go to a therapist!!! - to work through and earn the resolution to their problems. This couple did not do that. In fact, I have a problem with an author reinforcing (whether intentionally or not) the message that seeing a therapist or going through counseling is useless or makes you weak.
Thankfully, this was a quick, easy read. I liked the characters and was glad to see this couple find their way back together, but I really feel like all their problems were swept under a rug and not dealt with. After such a strong start with the couple dealing with realistic issues in a realistic way, it felt like it turned into one big angst fest before “Ta-Da” everything was all the sudden all better. There were a bunch of things I liked about this story, but the schmaltzy ending doused water on all my positive thoughts.
My book has the title: Getting Married Again. HarlqnSuperRom Feb 2004 #1137. First in this Hot Shot series, headquartered in VERY small town Idaho. Jackson & Lexie Garrett. Firefighters. Neonatal NICU.
Jackson Garrett is an elite firefighter. He's a member of the Hot Shot. This is his life work. Has this dedication cost him his family? Lexie divorced him because he had withdrawn from her and their daughter. He's so very sure that he could win her back. Boy, was he in for a shock! Lexie didn't tell him that she's pregnant with his baby and she's determined not to let him hurt her again. I felt sorry that Lexie felt so abandoned. She's struggling with her pregnancy and with her finances, but she can't let him come back. Jackson can't confide in her or in anyone that he's lost his edge. Pain and guilt are his constant companion. I could tell how hard this was for him. I wanted to tell him to let his family know what he's feeling. The drama ramped up with the premature birth of their son. It was so emotional. I could understand their terror. I,too, was afraid for baby Henry. I really wanted them to come to terms with their problems. Melinda Curtis has written a wonderful story that is well researched. I cared for all the characters. The story was an emotional journey. The characters are easy to care for, the drama heart stopping and their love amazing. I'm looking forward to more stories about the Silver Bend Hot Shots. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
This was a great second chance love story! What a journey these two main characters went on. Jackson grew so much throughout the entire novel, learning that he needed to be there for his family in a way that he never had been before. I liked how the reader got a peek into his heart and realized that he had loved his family all along, but did not show them by being there for them.
Lexie was a great character, too, and she loved Jackson so much. She was a strong woman who was doing her best to make it through some very emotional and stressful times. It was clear that these two characters loved each other and their journey back to a better marriage the second time around was wonderful to read about. This was a clean story, but I do want to point out that there were two or three light curse words for those who are sensitive to that.
I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
To everyone around him, Jackson is a hero. They call him "Golden" because if he's fighting a wildfire with you, he gets you out of that fire alive, always. He's always there for you, no matter what … except for his wife. Lexie has loved Jackson as long as she can remember, that's why she married him when they were still in high school! BUT, she just can't be married to him anymore. He's never there for her when she really needs him, or for their daughter. It's possible to love someone so much but still not want to be with them anymore! This book was SO emotional and had me in tears so much of the time! I felt for both Jackson and Lexie - I could see both of their sides and didn't know how it was going to work out for them. I was so involved in this story, I felt like they were real people! I desperately wanted them to work things out - Lexie has an unplanned pregnancy and the emotions between the two of them are incredible! You have to read this book! What is going to happen? Be sure to have a tissue with you!!!

Lexie Garrett filed for divorce from the husband she still loved. Jackson Garrett is a Hot Shot firefighter. Hot Shots travel the USA to where major wildfires occur. Lexie felt that even when Jackson was home he wasn't committed to her and their daughter Heidi. She decided to harden her heart and end the marriage for her welfare and the good of Heidi. The day Jackson signed the divorce papers Lexie wanted one last time with Jackson. Since she was told she could never have another baby and had a miscarriage shortly before Lexie never thought she'd get pregnant. But she did. Meanwhile Jackson ran away from his heartache to Russia to train firefighters there. A tragedy brought him home early to find his ex-wife pregnant.
A Son for the Mountain Firefighter by Melinda Curtis is the first book in her new series, Mountain Firefighters. This is a thought-provoking read with lots of emotion involved. Lexie and Jackson still love each other but must overcome some misconceptions to make a remarriage work. Their newborn premie son is a great starting place once Jackson comes to the realization that his son is a fighter and has every chance to survive. Lexie instinctively knows this. Some scary situations bring appreciation for all that they have together to lead them to a HEA.
***A Son for the Mountain Firefighter: A Secret Baby Second Chance Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 1)by Melinda Curtis 5 stars I purchased a copy of the clean novel A Son for the Mountain Firefighter: A Secret Baby Second Chance Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 1): Jackson and Lexie by Melinda Curtis and this review was given freely. Poignant, full of family drama and action this suspenseful novel contains two romances, a wonderful introduction to the Silver Bend Hot Shots of Idaho, portrays the danger of fighting wildfires and expresses the mental struggles after loss. Returning home after almost dying and after losing a Russian trainee to a wild fire, recently divorced ten year veteran Hot Shot Jackson "Golden" Garrett struggles with PTSD, the loss of his wife Lexi, the emotional withdrawal of his eleven year old daughter Heidi,an unplanned pregnancy and with his sense of self worth.
***Twins for the Mountain Firefighter: A Redemption Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 2)by by Melinda Curtis 5 stars I purchased a copy of the clean novel A Son for the Mountain Firefighter: A Redemption Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 2): Logan and Thea by Melinda Curtis and this review was given freely. Initially sad and heartbreaking this ultimately heartwarming story is the struggle to find love, family, and healing after bad childhoods, after depression, and despite dementia. Irritable and grief stricken after the loss of his twin sister Deb to cancer and his nieces to their unreliable father, confirmed bachelor, assistant superintendent of the Silver Bend, Idaho's Hot Shots, Logan "Tin Man" McCall returns home not only to find his nieces Tess and Hannah but also their nanny Thea and a dog.
***A Baby for the Mountain Firefighter: A May-December Older Woman Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 3) by Melinda Curtis 5 stars I purchased a copy of the clean novel A Baby for the Mountain Firefighter: A May-December Older Woman Romance (The Mountain Firefighter Series Book 3): Aiden and Becca by Melinda Curtis and this review was given freely. A suspenseful, drama and action packed novel of misunderstanding, love, sacrifice and forgiveness. Playboy assistant superintendent of the Silver Bend, Idaho's Hot Shots, Aiden "Spider" Rodas is confronted with his past when not only is his errant father but a one night stand in the form of a pregnant and single NIFC’s senior Fire Behavior Analysts, Becca Thomas appear at a Montana wildfire.
This is a story loaded with emotional situations. I enjoyed it, but it does have some heavy themes, so just be prepared. In many ways the stakes are pretty high so there is naturally a fair bit of drama and angst. I thought the challenging subjects were handled well. After a traumatic experience defying death overseas, Jackson, a wildfire firefighter, returned home determined to win back his ex-wife and rebuild his family with her and their daughter. He was surprised to discover that his ex, Lexie, had failed to tell him that she was pregnant. Both Jackson and Lexie had a lot of hurt feelings and personal trauma to work through, not to mention all the practical considerations and new challenges that emerged. “She’d asked Jackson to step out of her life because he was a hero to everyone but his own family. She loved him. She admired him. But it wasn’t enough. She needed him to be her champion, at least once in awhile.” There were many layers to peel back on these characters. They were engaging, even when I really just wanted to force them to go to therapy. The romance was fraught with intense emotions, which fit the circumstances. There was a sweet secondary romance in the story as well. The other Hot Shots from Jackson’s old crew were interesting secondary characters and had some fun interactions. They got me invested in reading the other books in the series. This book would have required a great deal of research and I appreciated all the details I learned from it. This story includes elements of life threatening wildfire firefighting, PTSD, death, grief, cancer, infertility, miscarriage, premature birth, parental abandonment and estrangement, financial struggles, and divorce. This is a closed door romance with mild innuendo and infrequent mild harsh language, other than one moderate harsh word.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Honesty first! I know very little about firefighting. I had read one novel about a wildfire prior to reading A Son for the Mountain Firefighter. In traveling, I have seen groups of enthusiastic firefighters stopping for lunch on their way to fire camps. Of course, there is the occasional TV show with burning buildings, but they are pretty far removed from mountain firefighting. Melinda Curtis’ Mountain Firefighter Series contains an interesting blend of romance and firefighter procedural.
Handsome Jackson Garrett, nicknamed “Golden” because of his luck, has demons to face: his status as a husband and father and his fear of fire after losing a rookie firefighter on his crew. Curtis takes us behind the scenes to see how hard the firefighting life is on the family back home and the difficulties of fighting fires fueled by dry foliage and fickle winds. We experience the firefighters’ camaraderie as well as the isolating necessity to show no weakness.
Although I was at times uncomfortable reading about fires, I learned a lot about the subject, which I consider a real plus. I enjoyed the characters who were realistically portrayed as simultaneously weak and strong. It was a fairly quick read and so interesting that I didn’t want to put it down. Now I’m looking forward to reading Twins for the Mountain Firefighter that focuses on Jackson’s best friend Logan, AKA Tin Man, a name given him by a “particularly disappointed woman” who “publicly proclaimed Logan to be lacking a heart.”
I would like to extend my thanks to Melinda Curtis for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this story about a family in crisis yet still in love with each other. When things got tough instead of pulling together it broke them apart. We read through the story how outside influences can reek havoc on a family and if the communication is not there then small problems turn into insurmountable crises that drive a wedge between people who care deeply for each other. It also affects those who are in the family such as children and relatives. Families going through such tragedies tend to think that they alone are in this situation but in reality so many people in the world are facing this dilemma. So what can one do to prevent this from happening? In the story a new life is brought forward for the family, but since there is also problems in this case then it only adds to each persons fears and anger. Lets all learn through this story to stop, listen and find out what the underlying concerns are that we can not see but feel and find ways to help each other without running away.

High school sweethearts, Jackson Garrett and Lexie are married and have a daughter. Jackson is a firefighter who travels a lot to put forest fires out. Lexie felt like she was raising their daughter alone. She felt he was never arose for her and their daughter. Fires always came first. Their marriage was in trouble. Lexie decided she wanted a divorce even though she would always love him. She meet up with him to sign the divorce papers. They ended up in bed together. He went to Russia to help fight and train a crew. There was an accident and he was devastated. He came to find Lexie pregnant. He couldn’t believe it. He thought she was with someone else. She told him it was his. Now he has to figure out a way to get his family back. The daughter is angry. He feels like he let them down. The baby was born early. Now he has to worry about his little boy too. Can they forgive and forget? Can they put the family back together? Will he still be a firefighter? Do many questions. It’s an awesome story. Melinda always make you feel like part of the story
A relatable story which is increasingly common nowadays, of a wife feeling neglected while her husband puts his work and ‘social’ commitments (i.e. serving the wider community) before his family. Lexie, a woman whose dysfunctional childhood taught her to be independent, is deeply in love with her Hot Shots firefighter husband, Jackson, but is unable to cope with his frequent and lengthy absences so she divorces him… Jackson loving Lexie and their daughter, Heidi, is profoundly unhappy with her decision, but is unable to perceive the error of his actions. He spends six months in Russia fighting forest fires, experiencing a life-changing catastrophe, before facing a shocking reality when he sees Lexie’s condition on his return. Ms Curtis chronicles the progression of their slow and erratic reconciliation amid further family and career crises in a sensitive manner that encourages the reader to empathise with each member of the Garrett family. 4.5 Stars. A series about firefighters...do I have to say anything more?! This emotional story has the hunky firefighting hero and a strong, determined heroine. Their relationship is touching from their past struggles to their current battles, and through everything their love for each other never failed. The story is an emotional rollercoaster ride. Jackson’s is troubled with the loss of a team member, which causes him to lose faith in his ability to do his job, but he’s even more afraid to fail and lose his family. Lexie is the rock, holding everything together even when her baby’s life is at risk. The visual in this book comes to life with heat from the fires. The secondary cast members are enjoyable, each hot shot having a unique nickname. This is book one in The Mountain Firefighter Series and I look forward to reading book two - Twins for the Mountain Firefighter where Logan has his own battles to fight. Reviewed for Still Moments Magazine.
Melinda has done it again. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down.
Jackson was a firefighter. He did the special forest fires and went all over with his team. He was getting ready to go to Russia when his wife Lexi asked him for a divorce. They spent one last night together.
When he came back from Russia he saw Lexi at his moms business and found out she was pregnant. He also found out it was his. How will they react now that he is back? His daughter is happy about it. Can he win Lexi back? He realized in Russia that he would always love her. Can he forgive her for not telling him about the pregnancy or the miscarriage she had a year ago?
Will Jackson stay a fire fighter or will he try to put his marriage back together? Can Lexi forgive him for always being gone? You will have to read to find out!
I love Jackson. He big hearted and hard headed. You want to hug him and smack him. He puts a certain face on for everyone else, but Lexie knows when he is hurting. He hides his feelings behind a smile. Everybody loves Jackson because he is so upbeat. But he hides a lot of pain behind that smile. He doesn't think he deserves Lexie or a good life. Lexie kicked him out and divorced him because he was never home. She didn't feel that they had much of a marriage. Jackson never opened up to her. When she divorced him and he left for Russia, she didn't tell him that she was pregnant. They had always wanted another baby, but didn't think it would happen. Jackson comes home with plenty of regrets and surprises. He finds out that he wasn't the person he thought he was. Will he be able to find himself before he completely loses his family?
This book was really hard to put down. This book was also hard to read in a good way the book was very emotional. The author had a way of reaching into your heart and just getting right to the heart of the matter as well. I can honestly say there isn't one thing that I didn't like about this book it was so good. I loved the brotherhood between Jackson and his firefighting friends. I loved how Lexie every though she faced some really hard things she was a fighter and would not stop fighting for what she felt in her heart. I like how the author took a group of friends and made them feel more like family. I felt like I was catching up with friends. This book is a clean read and suitable for all.
Jackson is divorced from the love of his life. He's not even sure how it happened. He's a firefighter and went over to Russia to train firefighters and comes close to losing his life. He, unfortunately couldn't save everyone. He comes back home to find his wife Lexie pregnant with his child. He still loves her. Can he convince her to try again?
This is a great clean romance with relatable characters. Those who make mistakes, can't seem to figure out what they've done wrong. Also, how to work on oneself. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series.

Jackson is a firefighter who is sent to Russia to work for six months. There he lost a young firefighter, and he goes back home traumatized. He belongs to an elite team of firefighters, but after Russia, he asks for a different position. Lexie loves Jackson deeply but can’t stand to be always alone while her husband risks his life away from them. So, she serves him with divorce papers. This was an incredible, emotional story, not only from the point of view of losing a teammate but also about the tiny little baby fighting for survival. I could feel Lexie’s excruciating pain and anxiety. The book is well-written and I’m sure everybody will enjoy this book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A traditional, clean romance with no cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. When reading this book, you truly connect with the characters. This helps, because the characters almost can't catch a break, and so you feel the confusion and conflict in their lives, as if it's your own. This is a young adult book, not a preteen, due to some adult topics. But also due to the connections in the book, you have to understand the depth of the concepts in order to connect to the book the way it was intended to be. 5/5, if I could put higher I would. This was a truly developed book, that has a great meaning behind it. Writing was amazing, and the physical image through the book was phenomenal.
This book was written beautifully. I’m surprised it doesn’t have more reviews. This book is a great example as to how things fall apart when you neglect your relationships with those closest to you. It also shows the hard yet rewarding work that goes into fixing a broken family. Jackson learns how to be a better husband and a better father. He just had to learn how to shift his priorities. This is a clean emotional second chance story. I read this in one day. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened to baby Henry.
An elite firefighter who loves his family but is always gone battling the wildfires of his job. Can he find a way to be at home more with his wife and child? Will it be to late to keep his family together. A wife of a firefighter isnt easy because of them always going away, can she keep her family together even with him away. Read this beautiful love story of happiness and hardships and what they do to make their family work
Lexie and Jackson divorced, but still love each other. She thought he prioritized work over family time. He thought she didn't need him. And neither is talking to the other.
The story is well written and engaging, but it is intense. There is some humor, but the story is serious. There is a happy ending and the journey it was satisfying.
This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from Booksprout.
Lexi and Jackson are childhood sweethearts, but their marriage ends in divorce due to the pressures of dealing with Jackson's job as a firefighter and a lack of communication between them.
Several months later Jackson is back and wants Lexi back.
A clean romance focusing on how they can rebuild their relationship.

This was an outstanding read! A heartwarming journey of forgiveness, second chances and the power of love just like in real life. This story is full of emotion and keeps you turning the pages. Great character development and a storyline that makes this book impossible to put down. These characters will remain with you long after this terrific book has ended.

Jackson and Lexie are high school sweethearts who married young. Even though they love each other they get divorced because Lexie feels that she's never got Jackson's support. Then one last fling the day they sign the divorce papers leads to an unplanned pregnancy... Lots of high emotional drama, along with fire fighter action. Good read
Loved this book from the start. The action caught me right at the beginning. The characters are strong and enduring. Hot Shot firefighters and the things that they go through. I really enjoyed the lost love and reuniting. I laughed and cried while reading this awesome story. Thank you Melinda Curtis for another great read.
This is a great book. I loved Lexie and Heidi, however, wasn't so thrilled with Jackson, although he did redeem himself nicely by the end of the book. Great detail on wildland firefighting! The author did a great job with this story. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
