Recommends it for: Fans of supernatural/vampire fiction; fans of steampunk
[Added note, Nov. 4, 2011: My copy was a gift given with the approval of the publisher.]

My five-star rating telegraphs my reaction to this work right away! A couple of caveats are in order, though, to avoid confusion. First, this is neither a full-length novel nor a short story contained in itself. What it actually is, rather, is the first two chapters of a novel, The Harker Chronicles, which Trestle Press clearly intends to initially publish serially, as many novels once were, though this time

I was intrigued when I read this. What in God’s name is Steampunk ? Being the mental giant I am, I had to go right to dictionary.com and this is what I came up with, direct from the website:

1. a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world.
2. a subculture inspired by this literary and film subgenre: t

Like most people I’ve always been a fan of the classic novel by Bram Stoker. Schmitz give us an interesting take on the subject here introducing the character of Mina’s daughter and her friends.

From the very start of this piece we get an excellent juxtaposition from a cosy picnic setting to the sense of deep foreboding and immediately a feeling that things are not quite what they seem with Mina’s daughter. When something goes awry at the picnic and the girls picnicking find themselves suddenly i

If you are a fan of cliff hanger series’, then this is the book for you! In this story we are introduced to Katherine (Katie) Harker, daughter of Mina Harker who passed away last year. We start the story with Katie and her friends at the zoo, having a picnic. But the picnic is
anything but normal. A large alpha wolf has decided to crash their party! I had a vivid picture in my mind of three proper ladies dressed in their fancy clothes, not making any moves except for their lips as they throw ver

Review: Now the unique part of the series is that it is a monthly series, so it's a whole bunch of short stories which I suspect will be combined into one huge book. My review is on the first part of the series which is about 12 pages long :)

The beginning of this short story seemed a little out there - a group of young ladies in a Victorian time period are visiting a zoo when a wolf escapes and comes near Katherine (Katie) Harker. Alth
