This is actually kind of funny because I'm going through my cook books after college and well I couldn't figure out why I never used this one. Well I'm going to tell you right now why I didn't use it! Prepare for a rant about why this is a terrible student cookbook.
1. This shit is way too complicated!
Ain't no student anywhere have 5 hours on a weekday to make Spiced Lamb and Sweet Potato soup! And what even is "ras el hanout" (Moroccan spice blend) !! F U Sara Lewis! im not going out and trying to find that when I'm studying for midterms!
2. This is not cost effective
Most students are working on a small budget, and most of these recipes call for too many or too costly ingredients. Or exotic ingredients that can't be found in most student pantries. Also it calls for fresh herbs/ spices which are more expensive and spoil quickly, it doesn't even suggest how much you would use if you have the same thing dried.
3. Portions!
The smallest portion size I could find in this book was for 3!! Um hello! Most college students are cooking for one! So at most all of these recipes will need to be halved or that poor person is going to be eating it every night for dinner for 4-6 days.
I think this cook book should be renamed 200 culinary student recipes for people who live at home and have rich parents and maybe a trust fund.
For the rest of you here's one of my fav student recipes and all you need is four ingredients:
Presidents choice white Mac n cheese and tuna, and some vegetables if you want.
Ingredients: - one package PC white cheddar Mac n cheese - one can flaked white tuna - 1 cup mix vegetables (canned or frozen) - 200 student recipes cook book
Directions:
Throw out your 200 student recipes cook book! Great! Now you're ready to begin real student cooking!
Cook pasta as directed adding your veggies about half way through cook time otherwise make your Mac n cheese as normal.
Open tuna and drain, use fork to flake tuna into your mac n cheese/ veggie mixture.
Stir well.
Voilà!! It's ready to eat. You will probably even have some left overs for your lunch tomorrow, toss it in a Tupperware and microwave at school.
