This is my favorite book of all time. Jorge Amado is such a master at developing rich characters that the location itself becomes the main character. If you like Gabriel Garcia Gomez' books then you will love this book. ...more

Very enjoyable read. A view into a different time and culture, the story of a small town on the cusp of big change. I normally struggle to keep track when there are so many characters in a book but they really came alive in this case.
