Vacation Under the Volcano Review

This book taught me a lot of knowledge about Roman Empire. For example, it taught me Pompeii was forgotten after it was buried in ash and pumice, and the language of the ancient Romans was called Latin. Also this book taught me something about myths. Hercules was a Roman hero from the Greek myths. After the Romans conquered ancient Greece, they adopted many of Greece’s heroes and gods and goddesses. Hercules was one of them.

Jack and Annie are back for another adventure, but this time they are going back to ancient Rome about 2,000 years ago. Morgan le Fay, told them to go back to retrieve a scroll for her. They go to Pompeii to save this scroll before the volcano explodes. Jack and Annie don’t realize when or where they are until a witch mentions something pertaining to what we know to be a historic day. Jack and Annie have another close call, making it back to the tree house just in time with the scroll.

I like this series for my 6-yr-old, but this adventure was pretty weak.
Again, I appreciate the historical accuracy here. The togas and sandals for Jack and Annie were accurate, as were the descriptions of the shops on the streets and the baths. This might be a very fun way for my students, who have just spent a few months learning about ancient Rome, to get a more first-hand view of it.

The one thing I noticed that wasn't QUITE accurate (and even my students should be able to recognize this, so I'm not worried about leaving this in the classroom library to read) was

I was surprised how entertaining and well researched this was. I learned things I never knew about Pompeii - yes I know it's a kid's book but my niece gave this to me as a gift. She bought it at a yard sale and thought it was about a Hawaiian volcano (she knows me too well) but I found the story really well written. I didn't know that Pompeii's volcanic eruption involved magma - volcanic rocks, different from the flowing lava in the islands - and the the moment the ancient city is covered, destr ...more
This is a great chapter book for kids to read that really engages them in learning about the subject the book is on. This book is one of many in this series and each time the children in the story go to a new place and learn. In this book, Jack and Annie go to Pompeii during the reign of the Roman Empire. It really makes learning about this subject interesting and exciting for kids. It is a simple and small chapter book for kids who are just starting to read chapter books. In the classroom I can ...more
