As far as I'm concerned, home is where the cat is and it's not a home unless there's a cat. Marta, who misses her old home, learns to accept her new home by convincing her new cat Sammy that he belongs with her. Cats are so therapeutic. I loved the illustrations of Sammy here. Whenever Marta is looking for him, he's hiding just out of sight, with sometimes just a little part of him sticking out. Cute.
A lovely story with beautiful painted illustrations. A little girl who is struggling to settle into a new home. This is a change of pace from the MANY children's books about moving. She doesn't suddenly find friends & new play-places and decide the new house is great (the typical ending for children's picture books about moving). Instead she discovers the new place is home as she tries to comfort and reassure the anxious cat her mom brought home after its owners couldn't keep it.
There is no reference to her father in the story (though it doesn't directly suggest he's not with them) so this a book may be appreciated by single parents looking for a book about moving.
I agree with this review from Publisher's Weekly: "On the first day in her new home Marta is struck by a terrible thought: What if the residents of her old house put ``yucky'' wallpaper up in ``her'' room? Drawing on such nuances of emotion, McLerran...puts a fresh face on a familiar theme. To ease Marta's transition, her mother brings home a cat named Sammy , who is also in need of a new place to live. The frightened animal flees to an unknown corner of the house, and Marta's attempts to coax it out of hiding eventually convince both child and animal of their new home's value. Kastner's expressive, warmly realistic oil paintings are visually engaging: she offers a variety of perspectives to illustrate the search for Sammy, affording readers glimpses of the cat's whereabouts unknown to Marta. Details such as the handsome quilt from Marta's bed accentuate the book's reassuring theme. Ages 4-up."
This is a nice story about a young girl who has to move to a new house but doesn't like it. She finds a cat who doesn't like it either, but is scared. In helping the cat, she learns to be okay with the home.
I particularly liked that the family isn't blond haired and blue eyed but black haired with darker skin. I also liked that a father wasn't mentioned, that it was a single mother who was a good parent.
