Barry Dickins is a terrible novelist - by any sane standards - but a storyteller of genius, and an inspired illustrator of his own work. Unreliable, incoherent, inconsistent, wonderful.

Dickins is at his best in the essay/memoir form. But this theatrical novel is a mad joy: Ron Truffle, washed-up old-school actor, wakes up in a shed with a chicken, wanders the seedy streets of Melbourne, meets ghosts, drunks, dirty cops. Remembers Gielgud and Larry. Bumps out.
