For all its old-fashioned punctiliousness and occasionally over-precious prose, Robert Glick's CLOSER EAST has a simple and elegant plot, which moves with increasing foreboding and tension the two protagonists—Vikhram (a poor Indian laborer) and Sebastian (a wealthy newspaper proprietor)—toward India and their intertwined destinies.
