Ms. Harrison has outdone herself!

I had no idea of what to expect when it came to a world book. I’d surely never read one before, so I was anticipating something fairly close to a textbook, which generally = boring. This was certainly information rich, but boring is was not. In fact, it’s fantastic.

The theme is genius. It kicks off with the Hollows humor we all know and love, instantly drawing you in. It’s basically told from the POV of an innocent bystander of one of Rachel’s spells gone hila

This should be read after Pale Demon to avoid spoilers. The ending of this book is just after the time frame of Pale Demon. I skipped and skimmed some parts because of complex reasons but I do intend to take my time and truly absorb all the information sometime in the future. It would be a perfect adjustment in a re-read of The Hollows series.

For a series guide, The Hollows Insider is pretty good. Kim Harrison gives us not only a bunch of dry facts but an actual story. Told from the POV of an in

This is the first guidebook I've actively sought out for purchase. But, as a massive Hollows fan, when I heard this was to be released last October, I was excited for months and has this one pre-ordered. My rating fluctuates between four and five stars for various reasons, which will be explained below.

First, the book is told mainly through the investigative research and slander of a Hollows Gazette writer who was on the bus when Rachel's spell to catch a were backfired, causing everyon

It was kind of fun. In general this kind of thing doesn't add much to the series, but it's fun for the fans. This one was certainly done with good intentions: the book is very high quality paper (and heavy!), the images really look like I imagined the characters would look (unlike the graphic novel, that's the difference when the author is fully in control), the cover has a nifty glow-in-the dark moon and some city lights, and it's just overall slick and nicely produced. There isn't much new inf ...more

I honestly have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it was a really cool idea to bring all the facts and fun stuff about the Hollows series into one guide book for readers. It even has a nice story behind its creation.

The good - I really love the recipes, spells, and cute tidbits. The 12 Days of Christmas song lyrics were my favorite touch.

But there's a lot of things I didn't like - It was a drag to get through some stuff. I assume a lot of people reading this skimmed a lot. I never sk

Just not what I was hoping for. I wanted it so bad.. it was tedious, filled with detailed spells and how to do them supernatural guides, IS files, Newspaper articles, song verses, maps, all stuffed in a reporter journal. Really I got nothing out of it that I did not already know. There was so correspondences from/to Trent that I expected to be interesting but they really did not give anymore away. The books had mush more exciting details. I am just not interested in how to do the spells or the d ...more

Wow! The graphics are awesome. The Insider is a fun look into the background of the Hollows. I enjoyed peering into Trent's thoughts and gained a better insight of his personality through the Kalamack Industries interoffice memos. I hope Quen's quote, "It is not always what we do, Sa'han, but who we love that makes us who we are," in the last memo to Trent is a clue for the future of the series. In comparison to other authors' series information guides, Kim Harrison out did herself on this proje ...more

In the Hollows, the supernatural Inderlanders rule, and humanity must abide by their conventions, or else.

To survive among vampires, witches, Weres, gargoyles, trolls, fairies, and banshees—to say nothing of demons—humanity needs a guide. And now, written by Kim Harrison herself, here is an insider’s look at the supernatural world of the Hollows, from an overarching new story to character profiles, maps, spell guides, charm recipes, se

I purchased this book as a reference, and it is quality construction as a reference book should be. The jacket cover illustration is repeated on the hard cover. It is about the size of a textbook. As you may know, the Hollows is a series fantasy in an alternate reality. It is one of my favorite series. The back story and the rules under which this world operates are complex. The length of time between books makes points, spells, species particulars and events hard to remember.

I don't usually seek out Insider's Guides... even for the series that I like. Most of the time, they are just a rehash of information we already know. But I think I would read a book about Rachel Morgan doing her laundry. And like it. So when I was presented the opportunity to get my hands on this book, there was no question that I had to read it.

I'm happy to say that was much better than watching Rachel wash her whites. Granted, we're not exactly breaking a lot of new ground in the Hollows worl

What do you do when you've read all of the Hollows books and all of the Hollows stories published in obscure urban fantasy anthologies, and you have no clue when the next Hollows book is coming? Read this. Will it completely satisfy the Hollows craving? No... But it does provide some interesting insight into the world Kim Harrison created.

The book's setup is pretty unique from page one. This isn't just an encyclopedia of characters and locations. It's set up as a series of journal entries from b

I'm about halfway through this companion book and more than a little disappointed. If you have read up through the latest novel, Pale Demon, then all of the factual content included about the world of the Hollows is going to sound like an uninspired rehash of information gleaned from the novel series. I wanted to read new, unrevealed tidbits about the world and its inhabitants that only Harrison has known until now, and sadly, none of that has been forthcoming. Despite the mildly interesting nar ...more

I haven't ever really read a "world book" before, but once I heard Kim Harrison was working on one for her Hollows series, I knew I had to have it! Since she was one of the first authors I read when I crossed over from the YA section (and before going back!)! The Hollows Insider was truly a must-read for all Kim Harrison fans!!

There's no plot or storyline really, but that doesn't detract from the marvelous writing Kim did! There are tons of things to read, emails, journal entries, textbook excer

For a series guide, The Hollows Insider is really pretty cool. Rather than a bunch of dry facts, Harrison gives us a bunch of dry facts AND a story AND some hilariously subjective observations. Told from the perspective of a reporter who's investigating Rachel, The Hollows Insider documents his research, with journal entries, selections from the newspaper's files and archives, FIB and IS documents, and various other papers he's stolen or stumbled across. It's particularly funny because while Dev ...more

To say I was disappointed in this addition to the Hollows series is a gross understatement. Ms. Harrison is quite forthcoming when it comes to giving her followers glimpses into her characters' inner thoughts and struggles. Her personal blog provides a forum where you can ask her questions about her upcoming books anddiscuss character motivation in depth, and Ms. Harrison will often give glimpses of what the future may hold in the Hollows.

I expected this book to provide more of Ms.Harrison's wor

I thought this book was good. A good companion book to the Hollows series so far. The book was positioned as a collection of journals and research summaries written by a reporter named Devin Crossman. He basically “followed” Rachel throughout the entire series and documented his observations and findings. The book was nicely laid out, with lots of details, and the book and its paper were of very good quality.

My favourite part was the summary about Jenks, and some of his curses logged as Devin’s

The best "World Book" or Insider Guide I've seen so far!! If you're a fan of the Hollows series, you'll definitely want this for your collection. If you're one of those readers that can wait for the paperbacks to come out because you're cheap, meh, you can skip this one. But I must stress, this IS the guidebook that all others will be judged against from now on. It highlights the entire series by following a human blogger/journalist as he tries to uncover the "conspiracy" behind Rachel Morgan. I ...more

Just realized I've been trying to read this for over a month. Not a particularly good sign.

Love the Hollows novels, but the format of this makes it hard to get into the "story". It's chopped up into small article length pieces. Too short to curl up like you're reading a novel, too long for coffee table like browsing.

If you've kept up with the books, there really isn't any additional information passed on with the book. Or an additional "story".

Basically, the book reads as if there is a blogger

Great addition to The Hollows and very fun read. I loved reading about past events from other perspectives, it provided a better understanding of certian characters and their motives. This is a must have for any fan of the series. It also seems to hint about a developing relationship between a certain elf and witch.....

The best "companion" book ever. Seriously. If you love Kim Harrison's Hollows series and don't get this, you're nuts. No retreads here, no dull summaries or histories, no filler. And the first printings even have glow-in-the-dark dust jackets. How cool is that?

Keep in mind that The Hollows Insider is reference book of things we already know, before buying this book. If you're expecting new and/or earth shattering revelations you'll be sorely disappointed.

What you WILL get is a highly detailed and entertaining read that sums up why this world is so amazing. Kim Harrisson has really done her homework with this one. Devin Crossman is upset after Rachel's spell misfires in book 1 and he compiles a lot of info on her and the Inderlanders...information he dug out of an I.S. dumpster.
I love how the official documents have confidentiality notices on them.

The Inderlanders are: Banshees, Demons, Elf, Fairy, Gargoyle, Ghoul, Leprechaun, Pixy, Troll, Living Vampire, Undead Vampire, Were, and Witch & Warlock.
- Elves are "currently playing extinct"
- Trolls are apparently related to squid

On the one hand, this is a very well-done "World" book, with an actual narrative that makes for more interesting reading than the encyclopedia-styled tome I was expecting. On the other hand, my nigh-poisonous hatred for Rachel always makes it difficult to enjoy anything Hollows-related these days, although I realize that is clearly my personal handicap. Seriously, I have no idea why I hate the character so much, I just do.

Since I assume most Hollows fans actually don't wish that Rachel would fal

I recommend reading this after Pale Demon to avoid spoilers. The ending of this book is just after the time frame of Pale Demon. I also suggest that if you are planning to do a reread of the Hollows series that you read this prior. The Hollows insider has a very in-depth look at the species in the series. Also a few tidbits on storyline that would make you go "Ah ha" while rereading the series.

Also, I don't know if a ebook format is available but I would suggest against it. To truly enjoy this b

Kim Harrison continues to delight and amaze me! I recently read Blood Work -- the graphic novel which tells the beginnings of Rachel and Ivy's relationship from Ivy's point of view. It was my first graphic novel and I really enjoyed it.

This weekend I read The Hollows Insider, which is not really a graphic novel, nor is it a traditional novel. I'm not sure how to explain it, but once again, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Written from the POV of an investigative journalist named Devin Crossman, the boo
