Here, Emmanuel invites the reader to journey to an uncanny place where our private longings and fears spill over into daily life; where lovers have each other investigated from a distance, or are brought together suddenly through shared dreams and fantasies. Like the artist who tries to paint fog and ends up by disappearing inside it, all of Emmanuel’s characters allow the ...more

I liked the last two short stories in this book the best, because one is a fairy tale and the other's a spy story gone strange. Emmanuel's style, which is sometimes dreamy but sometimes just trite, works for me when it's playing with a genre like that: the other four stories in this book sometimes felt like they were trying too hard, like they were too self-consciously attempting to be literary, without quite managing it.

The first story in the book, "The Invitation," is a single sentence that g

An elegant collection of thematically linked stories (read them in order) revolving around the ambiguity of identity. The premise of these stories is not in itself noteworthy--in each, a character is presented with a situation in which he or she attempts to gain information, whether for their own use or for that of an organization on whose behalf they are working--but the manner in which Emmanuel relates them is both so precise (one of the stories revolves around "the pointillist method") and so ...more

A linked set of stories that, in their fey, precious romanticism, remind me of Isak Dinesen's or, more recently, those of Georges-Olivier Chateaureynaud ("A Life on Paper").

A surfeit of elegance, like too much air freshener, often only serenades the ruined receptacle it seeks to rebotanize with scent. And if there is one thing to be said about François Emmanuel’s awful collection, Invitation to a Voyage, it’s that it certainly lays it on thick.

This self-important compendium of six stories too many flags its own sense of self-worth in its title, pinched from a famous poem by Baudelaire that works, with great singularity, to reburnish an urn of lapidary romance in a

Satu hari aku terjumpa sekeping surat tulisan François yang menyebabkan aku berminat membaca keseluruhan isi buku ini. Kadang-kadang ketika François sibuk bercerita, aku tiba-tiba leka melihat persekitaran sehingga terlupa yang aku tengah mendengar dia bercerita. Kemudian, aku kembali berminat selepas dia menceritakan A-- yang kelihatan sempurna tetapi menjadi orang lain dalam bilik tidur ketika bersatu tubuh dengannya tanpa seutas benang dan lain-lain kisah kecil yang dia selitkan ketika mencer ...more

I have a hard time defining what it was I liked so much about this book, but I think I'll end up re-reading it many times in the future. Which is kind of funny because the first short story/letter didn't appeal to me much.
