As a complete newbie to Tarot, I found this book to be pretty much perfect.

Chanek walks you through the basics of what tarot is and includes different perspectives on how it works and what one should do with it. He gives some common spreads and guides you through learning to interpret in your own way. He also breaks the 78 cards down into manageable chunks. He has a chapter or two, then a chapter covering ace through 10 of a suit, then another chapter or two, then the next suit's ace through 10, and so on. After all the suits, he covers the court cards and then the major arcana cards of the Fool's journey.

My favorite part of this book, though, is the exercises. There is an exercise or two in each chapter for you to do for yourself. These are sometimes about your life, your deck, your tarot journey, or whatever else. Then, there's almost always an exercise or two about a fake practice drawing to do for a situation he sets up. For example, a college student comes to you overwhelmed with school and everything else and wants you to do a draw to give them guidance. Sometimes Chanek gives you a specific spread to practice, other times he tells you to choose. It's a good way to practice when you're otherwise stuck doing draws only about yourself always, which isn't necessarily the best way to learn all the time.

My only critique is I think I could've used a few more examples of readings, especially early on, to get a feel for how Chanek would interpret a given spread. It would've also been interesting to compare/contrast my readings with his.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this book for beginners wanting to learn tarot. It was easy to read and understand. I'd also recommend tarot for people who perhaps want to meditate more but can't seem to "get it." When I do tarot for myself, it almost feels like a focused, guided meditation that pushes me to look at my life/problems through a new lens (the cards, the spread, etc.). I've found it quite therapeutic.

I've read a few tarot books; I find that they all have something useful to say. This is definitely one of the better ones. Jack has a chatty, informal style, with a strong emphasis on finding ways to use the cards that work for you rather than hewing to 'rules'.

The book is arranged in a way I've never seen before. Most books will go through history, spreads etc and then list all the cards, one after another. Jack has divided his lessons into six sections, to match with the six parts of the decks - the Majors, the four Minors and the Court cards - and arranged them in order. So the practical parts are paired with the down to earth Pentacles, the big picture stuff matches with the Majors and so on. It's a really thought provoking way of doing it.

The card descriptions include a full image of the standard RWS card and a description of the meanings. There are no reversals included in the descriptions, but there is a whole chapter (in the analytical, thoughtful Swords section) about the different ways reversals can be used and how to decide which to use and whether to use them. Personally, I'm a mood user of reversals - I tend to decide based on the person and question whether to use them or not, and only with decks where the image on the back allows reversals without foreknowledge. It's great to see such a thoughtful discussion of them here, and acknowledgement that they can have different meanings depending on the situation.

There are lots of exercises scattered throughout the book, really practical ones like "A person comes to you with this issue, draw your cards and see what they say." Jack emphasises the usefulness of a tarot journal to keep track of your readings. I have to be honest, I haven't started a journal - I keep meaning to and not getting to it! - but I'm planning to get one very soon and work through some of these exercises. I'm good at individual cards, but stringing them together into a story (in the emotional Cups section of the book!) eludes me so far, so these exercises will be great for practise.

There are also several different spreads sprinkled through the book. While the 22 card septenaries spread will be beyond me for a while yet, the others look really useful, and I'm looking forward to practising them.

Overall this is a fantastic book. It's simple, it's clear, it's the only book I've read that talks about the practical side of offering readings to people (in the passionate Wands section!) and it's definitely one that I'm going to come back to over and over. Just brilliant.

How does he do it? Seriously, how does Jack Chanek pull it off? You may remember how much I adored his previous book, “Qabalah for Wiccans”, which in all honesty should have been titled “Qabalah for Everyone” because it was the first book on Qabalah that really clicked for me, and would work for anyone, Wiccan or otherwise. Well, he back with “Tarot for Real Life: Use the Cards to Find Answers to Everyday Questions,” and yes, he did it again.

Now, when it comes to tarot, I know a thing or two. Not to toot my own horn, but I do some halfway decent monthly single card tarot forecasts on my Patreon. Yet, there is no denying that Chanek’s ability to breakdown complex systems and present them in an accessible order is perfect for tarot. Much like when reading “Qabalah for Wiccans,” I found myself giddy with excitement in achieving better understanding. And with the book’s emphasis on real life applications, “Tarot for Real Life” really IS tarot for real life!

“Tarot for Real Life” by Jack Chanek is an absolute must for anyone starting on the path of tarot reading, but I think even an experienced tarot reader can find something to take away from this book.

How to describe what I feel...more in depth than I expected!
25% through the book now, here is from the book "10 of pantecles invites you to be conscious, not just of the inheritance you've received, but also of the one you will pass on....How do you make the world a better place for the people who are going to inhabit it after you are gone? ..." Jack conbimed symbolism, numerology seamless throughout his idea and deep knowledge sharing with the public in such a comprehensive way. Unless you studied Tarot a bit, you started to realise everything he mentioned here can be taken for beginner, or even more advanced level Tarotist. Depending on what you want to get from doing Taor, there is more spiritual/philosophy thoughts he is sharing, it is truely a gem.

Thanks for this book. I love it.

If I had had this book in my hands about ten or twenty years ago... But I am happy that the new generations will have it in theirs. This "Uncorrected Proof for limited Distribution" of the book was sent to me almost one month ago. Easy and fast to read, eloquent, answers seriously to all your doubts and questions, does not extend unnecessarily in parts that can become complex (Thank you!).

Tarot For Real Life by Jack Chanek, is a practical guide, easy to understand, and well-focused on the symbolism, use, and application of the Tarot on a daily basis. It should be one of the recommended tarot guides for every student of the finest of divinatory arts.

One of the best introductory books on Tarot I've read (and I've read a few). The way the author builds up the reader's knowledge of the everyday themes of the Minor Arcana first, suit by suit, before tackling the Court Cards and the bigger, universal themes of the Major Arcana is very helpful, and makes a lot of sense. So many books go straight into the Majors, and the Courts and Minors are sometimes almost an afterthought and/or given just a cursory analysis. Add to that the spread suggestions, the insights, and general advice throughout and it really is a superb resource that I'll keep returning to.

Very accessible in writing style. My favorite book for the explanations of the minor arcana; each suit is described with a narrative arc, which I found especially useful. And overall, super inspiring; encourages engaging with the cards through journaling and practice readings.
