A destination wedding in Key West—sounds amazing, right?
Nope.
Not when you're forced to spend all weekend with your ex-girlfriend.
It's fine. Not awkward at all.
I've had two months since she dumped me to construct a heart of stone.
Seeing Remi again will be easy.
The hard part? Pretending like I'm not still in love with her when all I want is to get back together.
How do you get over the love of your life? You don't. I've tried.
So unless Remi gives me a second chance, I'll be the male version of the crazy cat lady—destined to live alone forever. After this weekend, it might be time to invest in some animals to keep me company.
Kortney graduated from the University of Utah with an English degree and spent a few years before motherhood teaching 7th and 8th graders how to write a book report, among other things. But after a reading slump, where no plots seemed to satisfy, Kortney pulled out her laptop and started writing the "perfect" love story...or at least she tried. Writing love stories is her job...just kidding. Her real job is taking care of her five awesome kids and spending time with her husband.
Kortney loves a good romance movie or book, warm chocolate chip cookies, and traveling the world.
not gonna be a long review for this one since the entire book was just stupid.
this was my first audiobook, and with that being said i think it's harder for me to process when i'm listening to a book instead of reading but i'll definitely be trying some more out.
i started this series because i am interested in one of the books, so i have to read the entire series now. then i heard this was a second chance romance and got so excited!
my biggest issue with the book is the only reason they broke up is because the fmc had mommy issues and she couldn't handle it at her boyfriend's funeral, so she broke up with him and then does NOTHING to handle them, she only goes to a therapist but it goes into no depth in the book. and then, even though she knew all along she loves him at the end of the book she somehow realizes he's the one when she said that the entire length of the book.
even tho it's a novella, i feel like some things could have been explained in more depth.
Highlights: - novella - second chance romance - Dual time line
My thoughts:
I first want to say that Compared by Kortney Keisel is one of my favorite rom coms of all time. I cannot stop recommending it to every reader I know. The gold of Compared had me jumping to read Commit. I’m so sad to rate this novella so low. It all boils down to this.
Long story short- I did not like Remi.
Long story explained longer- Remi was the actual worst from the first page all the way to the last page. Breaking up with someone you’ve been with for 2 years on the day of their mom’s funeral!? Big yikes, Remi. Big. Yikes.
In her own words: “I’m the dumbest girl in the world. If I were a character in a movie, viewers would want to take me by the neck and wring the stupidity out of me.” Oh I’m so glad you read my mind, Remi. I just have a really hard time reading a book when I don’t like the MC. I was so frustrated with Remi. And I didn’t want to root for Remi. I was rooting for Matt. But not for Matt with Remi. There was just no coming back for me after what she did to Matt. I couldn’t get past it as the reader- and I couldn’t get past it if I were Matt. He’s a saint. That’s all.
This was so cute! I really like to feel the history between the characters in second chances romances, and I think that can sometimes be tricky in novellas. But this was great! Alternating between past and present, there were so many tender moments between Matt and Remi to love.
Set against a beautiful setting of Key West, Matt and Remi are reluctantly forced together to celebrate the wedding of mutual friends. AND there's only one hotel room. Woo! I adored the hilarious war attempting (and failing) to prove they've both moved on.
Remi had a lot of childhood trauma that shaped her decision to end their relationship, truly sabotaging her happiness. Matt was so patient yet determined to express his commitment. He was simply perfect. This was a short read, but incredibly sweet and satisfying!
A great novella to read for a quick fix. I love a second chance romance. Loved the way it went from past to present in the relationship and the meet cute was perfect.
I found Remi so annoying. She just lead poor Matt along. Matt was so patient and deserving. I just wanted the best for him lol. I love the group chat between Matt & his siblings throughout the series!
“–I could look at this view for the rest of my life –he says. I glance his way. He’s looking directly at me.”
•• What’s this about? ••
Remi and Matt dated for two years. Until two months ago when she broke up with him (right after his mom’s funeral). Now, they have to attend to the wedding of their best friends and spend the whole weekend together.
The worst thing? Matt still has deep feelings for her. And he’s not ready to let her go that easy. The best way to get her back? Ignore her and declare a war between them.
•• What do I think about it? ••
This is the second book in The Sweet Rom “Com” Series, set a few months before the events of Compared: A Sweet Romatic Comedy. So, this is the second book of Kortney that steals my heart from the very first page. Since I finished Compared, I wanted to know more about Meg’s siblings.
Matt and Remi’s story is a very complicated one. This is a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance that was really well written. We go back and forth between the present and their past. So we can see their first times and see how those times are influencing in their present.
I really liked their relationship (past and present). They were really cute, really funny and Matt was the most thoughtful guy ever. I couldn’t stop laughing since the very first scene. I had a smile on my face the entire time.
Matt and Remi had the best scenes I’ve read in a long time. ELEVATOR KISS. Paddle boarding. MANATEE AGAINST MATT. Florida man tips over a sailboat. And so much more.
What I like about Kortney’s books is that she writes rom-coms mixed with real issues. In this case we have Remi’s childhood issues. The ones that make her difficult to pursue her dreams and happiness. I think Kortney touches this issues with so much tender.
So, do I recommend it? OF COURSE I DO. You are going to laugh out loud since the very first chapter. You are going to fall in love with Matt. You are going to enjoy of a lovely story. It was quite short but it was worth it. It is really easy to read and you are not going to feel the time pass while you read it because you get stuck in Matt and Remi's story.
•Ps. Once again I enjoyed so much the group chat between the Johnson siblings.
•Ps2. The bonus chapter of their second date was just cute.
•Ps3. You can grab this book FOR FREE through the Prolific Works app. (There is more than 90 other free novellas).
Wow. Author has anger issues. If this is a love story, I have a bridge to sell you. Also, the most hated & self centered heroine award goes to....drum roll please.... OF COURSE to this one!
People who have "issues" should not be writing Fictional Romances. I don't know this person and nor have I ever read anything from her, or ever will for that matter, but she made this heroine into such a self serving prick and a bitch that NO WAY should this ever have gone to print!
Commit by Kortney Keisel is a sweet, second‑chance romantic comedy novella about Matt Johnson who, two months after the love of his life Remi broke up with him, finds himself spending an entire destination wedding weekend in Key West with her again and every awkward, longing, funny moment that comes with pretending he isn’t still deeply in love with her when all he wants is another chance.
From the very first page I felt like I was right there in the Florida sunshine with Matt, smiling at his attempts to keep a “heart of stone” while internally melting every time Remi looked his way. The forced‑proximity setup, sharing the same hotel room at their best friends’ wedding makes the tension feel deliciously real, especially as the novella shifts between present awkwardness and sweet flashbacks that show why these two once loved so deeply. Matt’s sincerity, patience and trademark romantic earnestness made me want to hug him (and sometimes shake him), while Remi’s insecurity and fear of commitment grounded the story in emotion that feels real and messy, not just cute.
What stayed with me most was how the narrative cleverly balances lighthearted banter with genuine vulnerability: there is laughter in the playful “who falls first” moments and tenderness in their quieter reflections about why their breakup still stings. At times Remi’s reluctance to open her heart again frustrated me (and many other readers), yet that tension also underlined the theme that love isn’t always linear or easy.
I give Commit 4 out of 5 stars. It made me feel the warmth of sunshine on my face and the ache of unspoken love in my chest, all in a compact, cozy package. If you adore second‑chance romances with witty banter, heart‑softening chemistry and a setting that feels like a mini‑vacation, this novella is a perfectly sweet bite of joy.
There's nothing better than a second chance at love at a destination wedding in Key West!
Matt and Remi had a pretty amazing relationship--until she threw it all away due to her commitment issues. But now, together again at a friend's wedding, there's a chance to see if anything is still there.
I think for some, Remi can be quite the relatable character. It's easy for someone on the outside looking in to tell one how to live life and it was hard to watch Remi throw away the best thing ever, and she was aggravating at times, but it was so satisfying to watch her finally analyze herself and come to terms with all of it. And I mean all of it.
Matt is the knight in shining armor made of dreams. He exudes patience and compassion and I was thrilled to watch his story unfold, especially as the backstory is told through a series of flashbacks.
True to Keisel fashion, this story spills over with swoon and heart and I loved every page.
Content: mild romance; talk of parent death and family issues
While some of the running away got old after a bit, I really enjoyed the flashbacks to when Remi and Matt first started dating. I also think that Remi has a great taste in music. (She is a Garth Brooks fan.)
From strangers to friends. Friends into lovers. And strangers again📍
"Quiero que seas feliz, y aunque duela, si no soy el hombre que saca lo mejor de ti, si no soy el hombre que te hace sentir amada y segura, entonces me retiro. Porque mereces ser feliz. Mereces encontrar a alguien que te haga sentir segura"
Commit, es un second chance bonito sobre unos ex que se reencuentran en la boda de sus mejores amigos y que aún se seguían queriendo. Matthew y Remi me gustaron mucho.
Kortney’s books always make me laugh from the very beginning!! And this one was too different. I love a rom com that gives me the giggles but also some depth.
I loved the quirky FMC and slowly learning more about her character through flashbacks. And who doesn’t love an MMC like Matt!! He was smart, flirty, and devoted. I loved the enemies to more vibes they had and how much they couldn’t resist each other! Gotta love that hilariously awkward meet cute too!!
I just meant to read a little bit of this and then go to bed last night… It didn’t really go that way though. I finished it all in one sitting, sacrificing sleep, because I could not stop reading!!!
Within the first chapter, I was cracking up laughing! The Unabomber outfit, the conveyor belt… 😂
Then, I was wondering should I like Remi? She broke up with him right after his MOM’S FUNERAL?!!! What?! But her charm worked on me and she was so relatable and then, Matt was so gorgeous and in love with her still and I just had to see them get their happy ever after!
From their declared war to the elevator kiss 🔥 to the manatees… I just loved every single second!
Reading Remi’s struggle with self acceptance and her trauma really got to me and I almost cried! If a book can make me feel that much, especially in a novella, I am very very impressed. I’ve had the same fears and feelings as Remi and it was so beautiful seeing how Matt handled them and how Remi finally decided that their love was more important than her fears.
This novella was just beautiful and I loved it so much! I cannot wait to finally read about all of the other Johnson siblings! ❤️

🤔🧐🤯MY THOUGHTS:🤯🧐🤔
I believe this will be a good trilogy. I loved this little prequel with getting to know Remi and Matt’s story. Matt is a damn good man and he loves Remi unconditionally. He is so patient with Remi while she works on her issues. I loved this little short story!

Oh my lanta this book is hilarious. Im sitting reading on my lunch break in my office and have to quietly go close my door to contain the laughter escaping me.
"I'm still deciding if I want to go out with you again, I need a little more information" - Remi "I'll tell you anything you want to know" - Matt "Let's start with the basics, where are you from?" - Remi "Tampa." - Matt "What do you do for fun?" - Remi "Math." - Matt "There goes your second date" - Remi
This book was sweet and a down right good romcom, hilarious. Excellent banter, excellent charaters.
“You’re the only girl I know who could get stuck in a baggage carousel,” he says. I point behind me at the rotating belt. “That was not-” “It’s so you,” he says, dropping his arms. He bends down and grabs his bag, but I hear the words he says under his breath, “Part of your charm.”
He smiles. Not the cocky, who-do-you-think-you-are kind of smile, but the you’re-adorable-and-I’d-love-to-get-to-know-you smile. Does that smile exist? If it didn’t before, this guy just made it up.
He points the bat at his friend. “Reece isn’t a very good pitcher, and it would be a shame if someone as pretty as you got hit in the face with a baseball.” It tilt my head, planting a hand on my hip. “Do you always hit on your coaches?” “Only ones that are as cute as you.” Oh, brother. He’s schmoozing me, but I kind of like it.
Her beauty hits my heart like a defibrillator. She shocks me back to life and kills me at the same time. My chest tightens, and it’s not even the fear that his weekend will suck that is bothering me. It’s seeking her for the first time since that day two months ago and knowing that I'm never going to stop loving her.
“Patient? No man or woman would be that patient. That’s why they call it binge-watching. It’s supposed to be done in rapid succession.” Now I’m looking at Reece. “He broke the cardinal relationship rule. He kept watching Manifest without me. I’m an entire season behind him. He cheated on me with a TV show, and the worst part is that he used my Netflix login to do it.”
“True love is never binge-watching a Netflix series without the person you started it with.”
I wish I had shown up to the hotel on my own and checked in before Matt got here. I would’ve put on a cute dress and sat at the outdoor bar, my hair blowing in the breeze like a supermodel in a photo shoot. Matt would’ve walked up, and I would’ve gotten my eat-your-heart-out moment. That’s how this day should’ve gone. [Be completely honest, who hasn’t thought of wanting and wishing that this would happen to them?]
And right then, in my new yoga studio, in the middle of our first kiss, I know Matt Johnson is a keeper.
Ah, jealousy. It’s a beautiful thing. Or a terrible thing if you’re the one experiencing it.
I don’t know what game Matt and I are playing. There’s flirty banter and some kind of enemies-to-lovers flair, except in reverse. Lovers to enemies. Is that a thing? I’m not sure I even want it to be a thing.
She’s the woman who holds my heart. The woman I want to spend the rest of my life with.
Love is about having faith in the other person.
There’s something so cute about Matt when everything goes wrong, when his perfection is challenged. Those are the times I relate to him the most, and it hits me. Maybe I don’t have to be the perfect wife, mother, and partner for us to work out. Maybe there is beauty in the imperfection of it all. “Maybe I should feed you to the manatees.” His lips twitch, and it’s all I can do to drag my eyes away from his mouth. “You love me too much to do that.” Five minutes ago, I wouldn’t have said something so bold, but my confidence grew the second Matt pulled me into the water. His cute smirk turns into a sad smile. “You’re right. I love you too much.” “Hey, Florida man,” Reece says as he floats past us. “Quit flirting and get back on your board so we can continue our tour.” Matt squeezes my hip once before releasing me. I just decided that manatees are my new favorite animal.
Commitment has to go both ways. You can’t be the only one trying to make the relationship work.”
“The rest of your life is a long time, Matt.” I lift my chin up to him. “At first, something like the sunset is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen, but then, after a few years, what if you realize that you don’t really love it? How do you know you won’t change your mind?” “Because I’ve seen how magical it can be when you stick with it, when you fight every day to keep loving the same person.”
Matt is the man that brings out the best in me. He is the man that makes me feel loved, secure, and safe. I’ve been a complete idiot. I ruined the only good relationship I’ve ever had because I’m scared.
“Then, what do you want?” “This.” I gesture between the two of us. “I want Remi. I want all of you. Your good, your bad, your ugly. I want us.”
What can be more awkward than going to a destination wedding in Key West with your ex-girlfriend who you are still in love with? The hard part is going to be pretending that I’m not still in love with her when all I want is to get back together. How do you get over the love of your life? YOu don’t. I’ve tried. Unless Remi gives me a second chance, I’ll be the male version of the crazy cat lady-destined to live alone forever.
I don’t know how many times I said, “Stop it!” This book was too much. Too cute. Too adorable. Too funny. Too much of everything! I absolutely loved it. The past scenes, the whole batting cage scene, the Costco fight, the war, the beach scene, yoga, the elevator, manatees, the wedding, the note, the leaving, the car rental. Matt’s love and determination to love Remi was the sweetest thing ever. I adore Matt. And I can relate to Remi about ruining relationships because of my own issues. I would have loved to have this book be longer. Kortuney Keisel is one of my new favorite authors. I will read anything that she writes. I’m excited to read more of her books. 5 stars.
Before the separation. Remi and Matt are so cute. Their relationship was so fun. They’re fighting for a nonsense issue, like Matt cheated on her because he watched the entire season 2 of Manifest without Remi. I loved how they both got jealous with each other, they’re just so cute. Matt was so caring. He take care of Remi when she was sick. He even cleaned her apartment.
After Remi dumped Matt she was now thinking why Matt didn’t fight harder for her. When she saw Matt again she can’t keep her eyes on him. She loves how he smiles. The saddest thing that Remi did to Matt was when his mother died that day Remi broke up with him. They both met again because of Jana and Reece’s wedding. When they’re going to their own hotel room the receptionist told that it was only Matt’s name that has a reservation and all the rooms are booked. Now Remi was going to spend in Matt’s room.
Matt dumped by Remi but then they met again after 2 months. It was so hard for Matt to see her again because he was still in love with her and he was pretending to be not. When Matt discovered that he’s going to share his room with Remi he was annoyed. His still mad at her for leaving him. It was so awkward when they both go to their room. They broke up not in good terms. That’s why it was awkward for both of them to be together. Matt is so cute and funny. He’s also a loving man. (P.S. I found my new book boyfriend 🥰) When Matt pushing himself to Remi, she was just keep pushing him away. Even Matt’s father, he was pushing Matt to Remi. But what ever Matt did he can’t win Remi’s heart again.
Overall, I really loved this book. It was so cute at the same time sad. I loved how the characters seeing their flaws and helping each other to make that flaws disappear. Anyway! It was a great read. I really recommend this book even though it was short, but I still loved it.
What a disgusting book, you know it is the typical character that because he has a trauma should forgive everything and the other protagonist who has no self love, we are used to be the man who is traumatized and the woman who lacks self love but this is the other way around, Remi is horrible, one of the worst characters I've read "loves" someone and hurts him selfishly, by envy, by evil, what kind of love is that and Matt is too good, too dumb.
I hated the book the characters telling him he should fight for her, why? What the hell and her when he already says no, she does, disgusting. I was very outraged with this book.
(I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about everything by the end of the book lol, but realizing that I had 200-something highlights made things clearer for me lol ❤)
Fun fact: I was born in Key West, so this is weird lol
Now I have even more of a reason to dread flying and airports
She smacked his butt?? 😱🤦♀️
“I have a feeling I’ll always wonder about you”
Love it when characters mentally note little details about each other especially in second chance romances
Ah he’s a rocket scientist lol
The “cheating” fight 😂
Ughhh her mom was/is a piece of work...
There’s only ONEEEEEE room 👀👀
*This is war.*
Fabiyoga 💀
I’m curious about this other woman...
COMMIT
The elevator
When she was sick 💗
Sunset
Gahhhh I still can’t believe that’s when she broke up with him
“Don’t go.”
Girlllll, what are you talking about?? 🤦♀️
That. Note. 😭
I’m so greedy lol, I wanted an epilogue 👀
Content Warning: death of parent (past), absent parent, commitment issues, super sad breakup, flashback(s?) of a funeral, and I can't think of anything else...
Commit was such a fun read because I feel like I got two love stories out of it. Not only does the reader get to be included in the second chance romance, but we also get the original love story. A part of me wishes this could have been a full length novel, but at the same time it was the perfect lighthearted RomCom novella. Matt was completely adorable, and a total swoony and endearing gentleman. And although Remi could be (understandably) frustrating, I did like seeing her finally come to terms with her feelings. I’ve loved seeing Kortney branch out into this new genre (her dystopian series is absolute perfection!) and her Rom“Com” books just keep getting better and better. This is a perfect book for anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable read that’ll make you laugh and brighten your day.
Remi is one of the most manipulative b-word that I think I've ever seen in a Romance book. She only loved Matt back when times were good. The second things got even a little difficult, she shut him out completely. Work on yourself before you EVER, EVER, get into a romantic relationship. You can only drown a man so many times and bring him back to life saying that was what he was what you wanted all along.
I loved this cute book! My only complaint is it was way too short!! If you love second chance romance, this book is a must read!
Matt and Remi had a pretty abrupt breakup a couple of months ago and now they are stuck sharing a 2 bedroom suite in Key West at their besties’ wedding! This shouldn’t be a problem….right?! 😉
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 (4.5) Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only) Trigger Warning: death of a parent, abandonment
After two years of dating, Remi broke up with Matt on the night of his mother's funeral. Now, two months later they're reunited for their friends' wedding in Palm Beach. Despite the circumstances of their breakup, Remi and Matt still have feelings for each other. The forced proximity of their current situation has them reminiscing about the past and considering whether or not they should get back together. Will Remi be able to overcome her own insecurities or will she push Matt away for good this time?
Whenever I read novellas I find myself wishing I could have more time to get to know the characters or see them sharing intimate moments. That was not the case with this story! I loved how the chapters alternated not just between the two main characters' POVs but also between the past and present. This allowed me to see Matt and Remi fall in love at the beginning of their relationship and during their reunion in Palm Beach. I love when authors do this and found it especially helpful in building the romance in a short amount of time. Matt and Remi had great chemistry and shared some really sweet and tender moments, as well as some passionate kisses. I was rooting for them throughout the book. Now, I will say that near the end Remi frustrated me a bit with how insecure she was, and I do think the timing of their breakup didn't help with her likeability. But I was able to give her some grace considering her background. Matt definitely deserves an award for patience and understanding! Overall this was another great read from Kortney Keisel, and I'm looking forward to seeing glimpses of Matt and Remi in the rest of this series.
If you enjoy Kortney Keisel's writing, you have to read this!! And if you're new to Kortney, this is a great place to start!!
This is a second chance romance that is SO WELL DONE! You know how sometimes you want to smack the characters in a second chance romance and yell, 'you guys love each other so get together already!!' because its too drawn out?- I never felt like that while reading this story!
The back and forth between the present day, and the days of their meet-cute (hilarious), first dates (so cute), first kiss 🔥, etc. was PERFECTION! I loooved the background it provided and it totally helped you as a reader to totally fall in love with Remi and Matt and root for them and their relationship!! I loved seeing them together and to see Remi's growth and trust!
Their flirting and banter was so CUTE, I was laughing out loud and smiling like a fool constantly! And Matt is swooooony! Two words: elevator kiss 🔥😍 This book put such a smile on my face, it was the perfect story to start off my month!
So - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND downloading the free Prolific Works app so that you can access this amazing free novella!! (Plus like 95 other free novellas!) Totally worth it! Otherwise you'll have to wait until 2023 for this book to be released and read in other formats! . . . . Romance level: Clean - kissing CW: major neglect from parents, death of a parent - happening before the story begins
