Insistent Hunger

Rate this book
Paige has a small life in a small town, and that’s fine with her. She’s happy with her chickens, her job as a police officer and her questionable home-improvement skills. However, when her rookie partner shows up on her doorstep one night, everything changes. He’s panicked, bloody, dead—and still begging for help. And Paige is feeling an unfamiliar desire, a primal need for her partner that leaves her shaken and out of control. Brady’s dark good looks have attracted the attention of a monster, but that doesn’t mean he has to become a monster. Instincts might whisper about dark thoughts, but he’s trusted Paige with his life on the streets, and he’ll trust her now. If trusting her means learning to ignore his growing hunger for the woman and a visceral need to be in her bed, so be it.

Lyn Gala

Lynsey "Lyn" Gala started writing in the back of her science notebook in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. Westerns starring men with shady pasts gave way to science fiction with questionable protagonists which eventually gave in to any story with a morally ambiguous character. Even the purest heroes have pain and loss and darkness in their hearts, and that’s where she likes to find her stories. Her characters seek to better themselves and find the happy ending (or happier anyway), but it’s writing the struggle that inspires her muse. When she isn’t writing, Lyn Gala teaches in New Mexico.

She first cut her teeth on fanfic: gen, slash, het, and femslash. She prefers to focus on plot: mysteries and monsters and disasters, oh my, but sex can and does happen. Some of her stories focus on power exchange, bondage or bdsm. In her worlds, tops and bottoms are all mature, consenting adults. In fact, stories where they aren't squick her badly, so don't expect to find abuse stories in her journal.

This is one of my rare m/f books. Paige is a tough small town cop who doesn't bother thinking about the supernatural long enough to have an opinion about it... at least that was true until Brady showed up on her doorstep with a serious case of being dead. If you have any questions, ask away. This comes out next Tuesday.

Merged review:

God help me, but Goodreads drives me NUTS. So, this book is added to my list of books. I wrote up a little review about how this is a m/f and supernatural, blah...blah.. blah.

Next thing I know, everyone who had done ANYTHING with this title had their "adds" and comments moved to Insistent Hunger (a three year old "parent" book that is 20K longer and has a different ending).

And now my comment is gone (because I had a comment on Insistent Hunger already), and this book is sitting on the bottom of my list, but Insistent Hunger doesn't really exist. It's not available through Ellora's Cave anymore. In short... I don't know what the hell Goodreads is doing, but I'm sure confused.

For some reason, Goodreads seems very confused by Insistent Hunger and Bitter Blood. It's trying to put both my comments on this version of the book, and the other version of the book has no reviews, yet they aren't combined... le sigh. I wish I understood this site, but I do not have the energy to worry about this crap.

In short, Loose Id picked this up, and then we worked together to really take it apart. Bitter Blood is 20K shorter--lots and lots of tightening up. Brady's character is shifted a bit, and the ending is different. In other words, this is not a different edition as much as it is a gut job. It came out Tuesday, and I'm really proud of the improvements.

This is the first book I've read by this author and it was a great introduction to her work. Paige is a cop who is looking for a serial rapist with her rookie partner but one night he comes to her door in terrible shape. At that moment everything changes for her. Brady was attacked and now he's a vampire she thinks but as she learns more about what is going on in her town she finds out Brady isn't what he appears to be. Also, there are those who are hunters but the one she meets has his own agenda. With an attraction that she can consider doing something about because Brady is no longer her partner, Paige has a lot going on.

This is different than most vampire stories and holds your attention. The author told a great story with interesting characters, including the supporting cast. Love that Paige has attitude that is always fun. I hope there will be more to come and totally recommend this to anyone who like paranormal stories. I received this in exchange for a honest review

Fun and steamy

I normally only read gay fiction, but Lyn Gala has me hooked on her style so I went for this book. Thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't put this down. If you like creatures that go bump in the night, this is a very interesting take. No spoilers, but the ending leaves room for more, which I will buy up instead of waiting!

Amazing, simply amazing. This story is the kind that makes you wish for more books in this world. Do you know how difficult is to find a logical hero and a compelling storyline!! This book had everything I ever wanted in a book, except for a second book, but I believe f you beg enough times someone has to take pity on you. And I SHALL TRIE.

I thought this was an interesting and innovative take on vampires and I really enjoyed the book. I've read several other books by Lyn Gala and she's become an auto-buy author for me. Each book I've read has been a slightly different genre and they're all interesting.

I loved Paige, and I loved this book. Great to have a female cop, that is a real person, that is relatable. I have enjoyed Lyn Gala's other books, and am really thankful that I have this book to add to the list.

Note: review of EC version no longer available.

Paige likes her job as a small town cop and even enjoys training the rookies that come her way. But things change when night when her rookie partner Brady shows up. "He's panicked, bloody, dead-and still begging for help." Really he's a mess and even goes so far to bite her arm when she tries to help him. She cleans him up and finds injuries of restraint and beating. With evolved senses they come to the conclusion he's a vampire. But how? Brady can't remember a thing.

What I always like about Lyn Gala's work as the stories are well written. Even if I don't like the plot, the writing itself is great. And that continues here. Paige and Brady's emotions and fears come off the page as they figure out how to interact with each other now that he's a "monster". But Brady has always had a thing for his older partner and Paige and Brady get to know each other better...this is Ellora's Cave after all : )

Paige meets Jim, a hunter, and follows him around some to try and learn about vampires while keeping him away from Brady. She finds that these vampires are nothing like heard about before. There are different levels of vampires, some intelligent, some child like. She learns, but Jim has his own agenda and doesn't' think twice of using her for bait, without her knowledge.

To explain what Brady has become would be a huge spoiler and the emotional impact will be lost. It's shocking, sad, and hard to conceptualize. It forces Paige to think about him differently but together they fight the big baddie and in the end they find out what has happened to Brady and choices must be made.

I love paranormal stories that take old ideas and put them on their heads. So glad I finally picked this up.

Better than I thought it would be....

I bought this years ago and it sort of fell off my to-read-list. Now this version is no longer available.

I enjoyed Brady a lot. I’ve not decided if I liked Paige or not. The plot had a lot of twists and turns, some unexpected, and some ridiculous. I wasn’t really fond of the ending. It felt rushed and incomplete. I'm thinking about reading the new version just to see if I like that ending better.

While I liked the originality of the vampires in this book I still can’t say I was all that captivated. It was a perfectly good book to snuggle up with. Nothing more, nothing less

okay!!!! oh man, i wish there was more. I really like how strong the FL is. and though the romance was a bit fast paced, i kinda liked that there was no drama over the fact that brady aint exactly brady anymore. i feel like this was perfectly set up for a sequel, so heres to hoping though i doubt it :(
but, i really did enjoy this. it was different and theres so much more about this world that i feel like we could learn. Lyn gala is always great at world building.

Creative take on world-building plus the female led was awesome in every way, including cool headedness and competence. However the love story felt rushed, and I was more annoyed by the male love interest than intrigued by him. He’s too dopey and easily angered. The ending was good though, it’s a nice set up for a series I guess may never be written.

I don't care for m/f but I love Lyn Gala's writing so I bought this book and I was not disappointed. Minimal sex and a very strong story. And a kick-ass heroine!
