This account of the Piper Alpha disaster is perhaps more meaningful to me than it might otherwise have been because of the fact that I moved to Aberdeen shortly after the disaster, when the city was still reeling from it. But even those unfamiliar with the tragedy should find this a moving and informative account not only of a particular event but also of the cavalier way in which the oil industry operates. The gripping account of the Piper Alpha disaster: The deadly explosions that destroyed the Piper Alpha Oil Rig and killed many of the workers onboard. The book follows the stories of some of the survivors, how they managed to escape to safety and the long - term effects that this had on their lives. A very well written book and a page-turner. The descriptions of the scene, were impressive and very much like the photos I later saw on the internet when I "Googled" it.

First review. I can't not say something about this heartbreaking story. This book is written like a great work of fiction but sadly it is all too real. Matsen has a way of putting the reader right there on the rig and inside the lives of these ordinary heroes. The writing is very clear and concise and easy to follow and the story flows easily whether talking about geology, the history of the oil industry , the financial aspect of oil extraction or the day to day lives of the oil workers.
