In this cumulative tale, a boy wants to share the warmth of his home with others, and he invites first a scarecrow with a mouse in its sleeve, and then a butterfly, a robin, and others to join him. As these unlikely friends gather together by the fire, they wait out the fierce winter storm that is raging outside. The story is sweetly sentimental, and reminds readers that even the most different species can get along. The illustrations are rendered in soft colors and show the animals' personaliti ...more

Looked at the lovely realistic art, came to the cat--which looks SO much like my own tabby girl--looked at the cover again and realized the art came from the talented Nicola Bayley!
That said, this story is slight as can be--just a collection of animals coming into a warm house from the snow--and the poetry is adequate and not much more. Still, the art will delight children--especially love the cat with a butterfly perched on her tail.

A scarecrow is invited to come into a house on a cold, snowy night. He asks if he can bring in the mouse who lives in his sleeve. Then another animal asks to come in and another and another and another. Then they all snuggle up together.

The repetition of the animal names is great for preschool storytimes.

A perfect book for small children. It teaches love, warmth, understanding and consideration for others with animals. The illustrations are wonderful. This book made my heart smile. I really liked it.

It’s a cold, snowy day. All the animals want to snuggle up at Scarecrow’s house.

“A butterfly said, ‘Is it far too late
For me to come in and hibernate?’

Into the hosue and out of the snow
Came a butterfly, a mouse, and an old scarecrow.”

A perfect tale for a cold winter’s night.

Cute, maybe need to try again around the fall or winter-time. No one really fell in love with it before it had to be returned to the library.

A sweet, cumulative, and colorful story about creatures joining scarecrow and mouse by coming inside from out of the cold.

This book has great potential in the classroom. It is great for kids who talk about needing friends and for family to talk about belonging.
