OMG. At first chapter of this volume, I want to pull Megumi's hair so hard for being such an selfish and insecure person. >:( But really, it's just how she coped as a child. She was bullied. Still, it's really annoying the heck out of me. >_<

Then that trip! Oh. My. God. I absolutely adore Mei! And Nagi is so cute too. Hehehe~ Love this volume! Well the last part that is. :)

I was excited to get this from the library to continue the series. But, it was just meh for me. I felt like I had to sludge through this volume to finish it. So, I kept putting it off, and reading other things instead. I hope the other volumes will be better.

3.5* at best.

I did enjoy the date that Yamato and Mei had at Land, even when his little sister was along with them.

Mei and Yamato work things out, and Megumi's world unravels. Where does this leave Kai? In mortal combat (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) with Yamato who has decided to fight for Mei (and it's about time!)

Everyone is growing up, some in ways more harsh than expected. The book culminates in a trip to Land where I admire Mei and her decision to face her fears in regards to the rides there. You go, Mei! I'll just stay back here on the ground and watch...where it's safe.

I can't wait to see where this series goes next. I know that none of these conflicts are truly over.

i’m glad megumi got put in her place 😤 she was a she devil. the back to back of yamato telling her to shut up and aiko and asami telling her they’re not her minions: chefs kiss.

i also disagree with kai about him telling mei he likes her even though he’s friends with yamato. “if that was enough to break our friendship, then that just means our friendship wasn’t worth much more than that” UM WHAT. you outta your mind 😭

cute date for yamato and mei 😚 nagi interrupting and daichi not realizing is so on brand for mei and yamato getting interrupted all the time.

I continue to enjoy the path that this series takes. In this one, we are facing some insecurities in the relationship head on, and its so well done. Everything that is happening feels like it could really happen in a serious relationship during high school.
The next volume will be very interesting.

It's official. I hate Megumi.

"Aiko (to Megumi): We're not your pets. Stop wagging your tail."

Yamato and Mei still have a lot of obstacles to overcome and a lot of issues to resolve but the good thing is that they are willing to work on it. Kai, on the other hand, is a very good and honest boy who can't seem to keep his feelings inside so one day while walking Mei home from work he confesses to her. At first he was talking about -a girl who interests him- and then he told her bluntly that the girl is Tachibana Mei.

"Kai: Someone who has always thought only of myself but with a few words from that girl I was able to change those wrong thoughts. She changed me.
Mei: Hee... She must be a great person.
Kai: Yeah... She's great. A girl that has experienced a similar thing to me has a really good heart."

Kai left Mei with Land tickets and a confused mind. Since Kai is such an honest person, he told Yamato the next day how he confessed to Mei. He doesn't want any secrets between them and he is certain that their friendship is strong enough to overcome this. Yamato was shocked. But when Megumi tries to snitch to Yamato about Mei again, Yamato tells her how he already knows about it and she should really stop with that behavior.

"Yamato: Kitagawa always tells me things about Mei but that's enough. Because I want to believe what I see and hear with my own eyes and ears. Other than that, they're pointless thoughts."

After that Kai encounters Megumi and gives her a piece of his mind. He understood all too well how Megumi schemed with those tickets she gave him.

"Kai (to Megumi): You can't allow people to be liked more than you. You have to be the center of attention or you won't feel good. Am I right?"

Megumi's mask is slowly slipping and more and more people realize who and what she is. She is having a hard time keeping that angelic expression on her face. She is starting to dismiss her fans and even her best childhood friend isn't spared. She leaves Momo-chan only because Momo turned down her proposal on isolating Mei. Megumi saw it as a betrayal and ceased communicating with Momo.

Asami is also having a difficult time. She suspects Nakanishi is cheating on her and she tells that to Aiko and Mei. She is very surprised when both of her friends stand up to Nakanishi and tell him a piece of their mind. Even timid Mei is angry and raises her voice.

"Mei: Do you think it's fine as long as she doesn't find out? In love there is no rule that says it's okay to do something because he's a guy or because she's a girl. It's important to keep to each other's rules and be considerate towards your partner, don't you think?"

"Aiko: Then do it from the start!
Mei: I'm telling you, if you hurt her again we'll hurt you back three times as much."

"Mei: Please don't hurt Asami-san. To Nakanishi-kun, to us, she's a very precious person so don't make her sad."

Not only is Nakanishi shocked by what happened, so is Yamato. He finds a new respect for his beautiful girlfriend. He takes her to Land for two days and one night, a trip during summer vacation for just the two of them. Well, it would be two if Nagi hadn't asked their older brother to take her too so they were together the first day. Ii was a little bit disappointing to see how there still hasn't been any action between Yamato and Mei so far. And they had a couple of perfect opportunities.

Say ‘I Love You’ feels like the antithesis of Kimi ni Todoke for me. Both deal with awkward teenage girls who get bullied for their scary demeanor, popular guy in their school takes an interest in them, and romance blossoms while dealing with the ups and downs of the high school social mores and population in that relationship. But while Kimi ni Todoke encapsulates the super-warm fluffy aspect of romance shojo manga, Say ‘I Love You’ has a little bit more realism to it—Mei’s bullying is more up front and brutal, and there’s been more consequences to the characters’ actions.

Volume 6 is a little more filler than the previous volumes so far, but what I really like about this series is that Kanae Hazuki puts in the seeds for future conflicts early on. This starts off with Meg’s slowly dissolving façade of being the nice, sweet, cute girl and how manipulative she’s learned to become. We get Meg’s backstory of getting bullied for being “poor and ugly” before she learned how to weaponize make-up and being cute and innocent. And although it’s not really resolved by the end of the volume, I like that we start to see hints of her friends beginning to call her out on her bullshit.

The majority of this volume focus more on Mei and Yamato’s upcoming one-year anniversary and that Yamato’s friend Kai having a crush on Mei. While it could getting annoying that Mei doesn’t realize that two boys are really in love with her, it makes sense to me because she still doesn’t know how to completely read people. (To be fair on my hand, I read this back-to-back with High School Debut which has the same kind of plot thread in that, so I was a little “Oh, this again.”) And to be honest, I’m really not a fan of how even though Kai explains that he’s backing off on Mei (but will continue to protect her), Yamato’s first inclination is to go ballistic on Mei. Yeah, I get that they’re high school students and no one really can spit out the truth to each other, but sometimes the trope does get a little overdone and frustrating. The rest of the volume is spent with Mei and Yamato’s trip to ‘Land,’ which cute and fun, and has Mei being adorable so the plot is slightly redeemed for me.

I also like that the ending trip is framed by Mei’s nervousness about spending the night alone with Yamato, but I do like that she’s become more mature in their relationship—she’s still nervous about the idea of sex, but she’s more comfortable being alone with Yamato and more open to the possibility that it could happen. (Side note: I LOVE MEI’S MOM. She’s only a cameo character at points, but she’s so funny each time she shows up. More of her in the rest of the series.)

Although Volume 6 felt more like a breather volume, I did still really enjoy this. I think what makes Say ‘I Love You’ work for me so much more is that even though the story is 100% romance manga tropes, the characters really aren’t—Mei’s just not interested, Yamato can be an outright jerk (and gets called out on it), and the side characters aren’t perfect either, even after everyone becomes ~friends~. I’m really interested in the Meg subplot that’s shown up, and I can’t wait for the next volume next month.

~4/5

There’s drama from Megumi continuing. Her plot line is too long, I want her to be over already. And she’s trying to drag Kai into it, but Kai already has his own problems with Yamato to work through.

Even though there’s a lot of drama in this series from Megumi and other characters, I love Yamato and Mei together. Throughout the drama, as it slowly gets worked out, we get scenes between the two of them. Just cute little moments where they’re honest with each other, or they just kiss. Where they push their insecurities away for a moment and we just get to see them together. And it’s so sweet and cute, and it shows why you’re rooting for them to stay strong.

They definitely still need to get to really know each other, talk and learn about each other, be honest about their insecurities and what’s happening. But those moments give you hope that they will do that, that it’s coming. It’s just tough right now.

The last part of the volume shows the two on a real over night date to Land, and it’s so cute and fun and adorable. Yamato’s sister interrupts them for a while, but I’m looking forward to the conclusion of it in the next volume.

I just eat up the books in this series. They’re mature shojo at its best, drama and romance, and I love every bit of it.

This short review will be repeated on every single volume. Previously, it sat at four stars; I was young and into dumb shit.

Because it was trendy to like books where the popular guy gets with the nerdy girl, I liked this back then. Now, I’m so over these tropes. He’s not even that great. Hell, just about everyone sucks here.

Suki-Tte Ii Na Yo a.k.a Say I Love You

A light read filled with positive messages.

(The rating and review are conclusion for all of the volumes excluding the synopsis. Beware of spoiler.)

《 Plot 》
The pace of the story is good. Although there are 18 volumes all over, it doesn’t make you lose interest in it. The story starts by introducing Mei who's a bully victim. She doesn’t have any friends because she always distances herself from people. This is because she has been betrayed by her friends back in the middle school. Ever since then, she never trusts people anymore. However, she begins to change when she gets to know Yamato. Yamato is a popular guy that has many friends and is wayyy too friendly with girls. He starts to approach Mei when she kicked him because of some misunderstanding that happened. Yamato pursues Mei every day which eventually leads them being together. The story starts to develop from there and it’s being told from Mei’s POV.

《 Characters 》
Mei Tachibana, the heroine
When Mei starts falling in love with Yamato, she feels scared of showing everything to him. I can relate to that a lot because you don't know how things will be so it's scary. There are other moments that I can relate to but I won't tell you to avoid spoiler.

At one point, Mei begins to change herself by engaging more with people around her. That's what makes her strong and kind girl. She is very observant of people around her and tries to help them the best she can. I love her character development.

Yamato Kurosawa, the hero
Yamato is a typical cool who is popular for his kindness. Despite being a cool popular guy, he still has his own flaws. There are some issues that he struggles with but didn't let people see him in that way. I wouldn't really picture him as a really good guy. He has his flaw but he learns to change little by little.

《 Pros & Cons 》
Realistic & healthy relationship
↳ There are several couples born in this comic and each of them shows what relationship is likely to be in real life especially Mei’s relationship. If you have been in a relationship, several situations that happened will make you go “Omg, I went through that too!”. On top of that, most of them are in a healthy relationship making it enjoyable to read.

Positive messages
↳ It touches the issue of bully and friendship. Although Mei has been bullied, she doesn’t retaliate at those who had betrayed her back then. It also shows that life is more wonderful with loyal companions being by your side.

The art drawn
↳ It’s not that the art are bad or anything. It’s just not really my cup of tea. I noticed that the art was changing slightly as the volume continues on. It got better in my opinion.

《 Extras 》
My favourite manga! I keep going back to this whenever I feel like reading something light and fun. This is my first manga that I read when I first started to read comic. I was so happy when I found out this comic had completed in English version. These are several quotes that I love from this story.
“Nothing makes a girlfriend more insecure than a boyfriend who's kind to everyone.”
“No matter how beautiful you are, when you're dating someone, all of your flaws come out.”
“If you want to move forward, sometimes, you can't keep doing things the way you've always done them. That peace of mind ruins you and hurts people.”
“You can get stronger by loving others and letting them love you.”

⚝ Who should read? ⚝
❥ Enjoy high school story.
❥ Love friendship theme story.
❥ Can tolerate typical “famous guy” falls for “unpopular girl”.

✎ Synopsis Volume 6
A lot of misunderstanding are happening as Mei and Yamato decide to celebrate their anniversary together.

Hazuki is definitely going for more longer-form storytelling with the love triangle and Megumi's deal though I still prefer the stories that were told with the shorter stories (it doesn't help Megumi's story feels a bit distended).
We get some more Meg backstory and while I think it makes sense and some ppl do go to extreme lengths I don't like bully characters that don't grow but instead bunker down when given the chance (and Megumi has so many chances to stop, reflect, and grow instead of further fuck over Mei) so she's still super unlikable. But maybe Mei will give a good author insert speech and I'll love to see her grow.
I am glad with how Hazuki handles her backstory. You can disagree with how Megumi chose to deal with stuff and say there were other options or paths but it's plausible she would end up adopting the view she did. I'm glad shes starting to get it through to her on how it is not a good manner to act though and the slow realization and self-hiding is written so well.
We get more Mei X Yamato and Kai x Mei and honestly I'm here for the love triangle. Both are great male leads (although Mei and Yamato can both be a bit beat-around-the-bush when its something that is eating at them creating a bit too many Big Mis's and communication errors for me like last volume's book-long). I like both ships as the Yamato X Mei stuff here gives a much better light to Yamato than last volume. While I do enjoy the love triangle story the romance still isn't a super big draw to me though it is growing on me now with this love triangle.
The Megumi plotline is long and while I enjoy the look into that kind of person it sometimes gets a bit repetitive and I'm amazed its seemingly going to continue into next volume. For it's length it doesn't have as much to say though it does give some nice continued storytelling. Its been transitioning from character of the book to more romance and longer format drama and I think I'm just nit as much of a fan of it especially with Megumi front and center.

You know what they say about karma. Finally Meg is getting her just deserts. I appreciate that we get her back ground. While it doesn't excuse her behavior it makes her human, and explains why she is the way she is. I feel like that's an important lesson. I'm loving the way Mei is blossoming. She's coming into her own,and forming strong friendships! I love that development. It's so important for young girls to have friends they can trust who'll be there to support them. Yamata stands up for Mei againt Kai who'se developed feelings. While i don't condone violence. I was happy to see him step up. For a minute there it felt like Kai understood and cared for her more.

One of the themes that stood out to me in this book is friendship. What is friendship? What does it mean to be a friend? How does one define it? Is it by actions? Words? What you may think of as friendship may not be the same to others. Perception on both sides can be different. There's a scene in this book that depicts it perfectly. Friends vs being friendly.

Lesson to be learned is to check in with yourself. How do you treat yourself. How do you treat others. Check in with your friends or for that matter those in your life. Ask them how they perceive you. Is it what you thought or do you want to change that perception? Good reality check for all of us to grow as humans.

I could care less about Megumi's sob story. I hate when authors give a villain a sad backstory and then use that as an excuse for said character to act like a jerk. Megumi is just so annoying and as of now, I really don't like her. I feel bad that she was bullied when she was younger, but that doesn't give her the right to treat Mei so badly. Like Yamato doesn't want you, move on!

Speaking of Yamato, he's such a hypocrite. He spent a whole bunch of time hanging out with Megumi without letting Mei know but now that Mei is giving him a taste of his medicine by doing the same thing with Kai, he has a problem. The more I read this series, the more I'm starting to dislike Yamato. Kai is now my favorite character in this series and I need him to get more screen time. I already know Mei/Yamato are the endgame ship but they need to work on communicating better because I'm liking them less and less as a couple.

I felt like this volume was kind of filler for me, not much happened and it just seemed like a fun day at the carnival and wrapping up whatever was needed during the school year and moving towards some summer fun!

But they're sharing one room together... and there's one bed 😳

Next volume is gonna be so KSKSKSA,SJKAMS

I’m so in love with every character, they’re all so dynamic and relatable! The girls are all so unique and multifaceted and remind me of so many girls/women i grew up around and love very much. I love the warmth and positivity in the series too, just such a good message to spread. Opening yourself to love can make it flow from your heart like a spring.

I found this volume to be less interesting and engaging than the last. I suppose the best part was seeing Mei and Yamato go on their one-year-anniversary trip, and that cliffhanger should help volume 7 be a bit spicy.

Kai loves Mei. Ahhh! I saw that coming! But I’m glad he isn’t petty enough to help Megumi out.
And Megumi started out trying to isolate Mei and ended up isolated herself!!! Karma!!!!
And is the “big moment” going to happen for Mei and Yamato on their overnight trip???
