Coaching By Values: A Guide To Success in the Life of Business and the Business of Life

Rate this book
This book is about values. It is about life values, work values, family values, and world values. It is also about value alignment. Author Simon Dolan extends the concepts presented in the best-selling Managing by Values, adding many innovations including a step-by-step methodology for diagnosing value congruence and tools for conducting real value reengineering (value alignment). Dolan argues that when people understand their values (regardless of how and why they have emerged), and analyze their relative importance and consequences, they can see more clearly how these values affect their daily lives. Extensive research shows that realignment of values ensures better congruence with goals and objectives-resulting in deeper inner satisfaction, which positively affects overall well-being, state of mind, performance, and general happiness. This is what the author calls "success in the life of business and the business of life" The description is fresh and innovative, the methodology is clear, and the tools can be used by individuals, business professionals, families, organizations, and wellness and life coaches alike. I came across this book when I was searching for coaching methodologies. As per the title, Simon Dolan’s book deals with the topics around coaching by values.

Simon Dolan gives an overview of various coaching models and introduced a step-by-step methodology for value-reengineering (value alignment). I was instantly drawn to his book because of his candid and colorful writing style. In the introduction Simon Dolan states that he has deliberately set aside the academic style, which he was trained to write different kind of book. He goes on stating that ´This is the most personal of all my books; I wrote it for you´ . The book takes me on Simon Dolan´s journey through his experiences in the academic and consulting world that led him to create a methodology of coaching by values. Simon Dolan successfully links the values to culture and how to use values in coaching whilst he introduces a methodology with hands-on tools. Convinced of his vast experience of consulting and coaching, thoughts and reflections, I was receptive to Simon Dolans´ lexical as well as conceptual semantics.

The main value of Simon Dolan´s book lies in its practical and applicable step-by-step methodology to coach by values, including self-coaching and coaching others: Simon Dolan suggests the concepts and methodologies of coaching by value to serve the purpose of achieving success in the life of business and the business of life. The latter is also grounded in his concept of value-reengineering which helps people align their values to their goals to lead a happy, fulfilling life in harmony.

At heart, this concept encourages us to select tools and frameworks that are best suited to the coachee, based on the first initial learning conversation.
Great book to amplify your coaching skills!
